Opportunity at Risk
Opportunity at Risk offers a groundbreaking approach to preserving family wealth across generations by integrating proactive risk management with traditional asset planning. Drawing from decades of experience advising high-net-worth families, the authors reveal why most wealth disappears within three generations and how to prevent it. The book challenges the siloed, asset-only focus of traditional planning by exposing off-balance sheet liabilities, the hidden threats most families never see coming. This practical guide empowers families to align their emotional and financial risk tolerance, coordinate across advisors, and protect their legacy with intention. For those who have built wealth and want to preserve it, Opportunity at Risk is a must-read roadmap to financial resilience and generational continuity.

Finishing the Inflation Job and New Challenges for Monetary Policy
Target 2%: Easing Inflation in an Uncertain WorldHow should the Fed finish the inflation-reduction job and prepare for the changing world ahead, addressing challenges of tariffs, supply chain "shocks," and changes in the status of the dollar and the nature of international cooperation? Finishing the Inflation Job and New Challenges in Monetary Policy collects essays and discussions from the annual Hoover Institution Monetary Policy Conference, held on May 9, 2025, exploring these themes and considering other big-picture issues that affect monetary policy in this volatile international environment. Each year, the conference brings together academics, policymakers, media members, and others to consider the issues affecting monetary policy, both in the United States and worldwide. In her welcoming remarks to the conference, Hoover Director Condoleezza Rice sets the tone, stating that the United States is "experiencing an avalanche of uncertainty," with everything about the international order in question, including the United States' role in it. With inflation still stubbornly above the Federal Reserve's 2% target at the time of the conference, how to finish the inflation-reduction job was a natural point of focus. But contributors also explore in depth many other challenges and questions on monetary policy that lie ahead: How should central banks counter a new surge of inflation, should one arise? What lessons should we take from the 2021-22 inflationary episode? Are tariffs the next supply shock? How should central banks adapt their formal strategies, constructed in an era of zero-interest rates and low inflation? How should financial regulation adapt to the uncertainties of geopolitics and the big technological innovations going on around us? This year's conference included a celebration of the life and career of John B. Taylor. Many essays convey this spirit of homage, noting the influence of Taylor and the Taylor rule on policymaking. Among its eight sections, the book proceeds by exploring current issues in finance and the financial regulation of cryptocurrency, the growing role of private credit, and how the history of the price stability objective reverberates in the present day. Monetary policy must adapt to this very new world.
And the Light Became so Bright
The philosophy and the policy of C.H. Douglas had a profound influence on the writings of Ezra Pound. It is important to emphasize that this philosophy and policy were by no means limited merely to the question of monetary reform and economic considerations. C.H. Douglas has always insisted that monetary reform is but one aspect of Social Credit. He has constantly referred to Social Credit as the policy of a philosophy. He sees this philosophy as having its roots in a firm belief in the uniqueness and sacredness of the human individual. He has always insisted upon the Christian concept of the individual as opposed to the mass collectivism, which is advocated by various forms of materialistic messianism, e.g., Marxian Socialism.C.H. Douglas regards the continuing warfare against the dignity, liberty, and sanctity of the individual and the move toward the centralization of power in industry, finance, and government to be the great crisis of our times. He sees the centralization of financial power as a key factor in this war upon the individual. This centralization of financial power is possible because of the complete domination of the existing monetary system by usury. The existing monetary and financial system is based upon a system of usury which in no way takes into account the economic facts of life. Ezra Pound first met C.H. Douglas in The New Age editorial offices of A. R. Orage in 1918. He therefore met Douglas when Douglas's first articles on Social Credit were beginning to appear in The New Age. Because of his meeting and continuing contact with Douglas, Pound plunged into a life-time of research, one of the objects of which was to verify the truth of the Douglasite philosophy and proposed policy. The research carried him very deeply into the realm of world history and particularly monetary-economic history. This research took him on an intellectual periplum or voyage of discovery into the work and careers of Confucius, Malatesta, Cosimo de Medici, Leopoldo il terzo, and Pietro Leopoldo of the House of Habsburg-Lorraine, Napoleon, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Randolph of Roanoke, Abraham Lincoln, Benjamin Franklin, Duns Scotus, John Scotus Eriugena, St. Anselm, St. Ambrose, Alexander Del Mar, Thomas Hart Benton, Sir Edward Coke, Agassiz, etc. The purpose of The Cantos has been to record and chronicle the life-giving tradition based upon the dignity of the human individual and upon the philosophy of abundance. This philosophy of abundance is the distributist philosophy which prevailed whenever and wherever economic justice prevailed in history. This distributist philosophy was always connected with that monetary literacy and wisdom which opposed itself to usury. This distributist philosophy and policy of abundance is the very philosophy upon which the monetary-economic aspects of Douglasism are based. Hence Pound sees Douglasism as part of a much older thought-tradition or paideuma. Opposed to this life-giving tradition is the death-dealing blight which manifests itself in collectivism, but whose very heart and soul is the system of usury. Pound sees usury as the great sin from which all other sins flow and upon which they feed. His interest in Usura and in the anti-usury paideuma throughout history can only be ascribed to the influence of C.H. Douglas, since it simply did not exist before Pound met Douglas. Pound's great interest and respect for medieval thought was encouraged by the fact that medieval thought equated usury with sodomy in that both were against the abundance of nature. The policy and philosophy of C.H. Douglas provides a dominant theme for much of Pound's prose writing and provides the focal point or unifying theme for his great epic masterpiece, The Cantos. It is difficult to over-emphasize the impact of Douglas and Douglasism on the writings of Ezra Pound.

The Price of Time
Winner of the 2023 Hayek Book Prize Longlisted for the 2022 Financial Times Business Book of the Year Award A comprehensive and profoundly relevant history of interest from one of the world's leading financial writers, The Price of Time explains our current global financial position and how we got here In the beginning was the loan, and the loan carried interest. For at least five millennia people have been borrowing and lending at interest. The practice wasn't always popular--in the ancient world, usury was generally viewed as exploitative, a potential path to debt bondage and slavery. Yet as capitalism became established from the late Middle Ages onwards, denunciations of interest were tempered because interest was a necessary reward for lenders to part with their capital. And interest performs many other vital functions: it encourages people to save; enables them to place a value on precious assets, such as houses and all manner of financial securities; and allows us to price risk. All economic and financial activities take place across time. Interest is often described as the "price of money," but it is better called the "price of time: " time is scarce, time has value, interest is the time value of money. Over the first two decades of the twenty-first century, interest rates have sunk lower than ever before. Easy money after the global financial crisis in 2007/2008 has produced several ill effects, including the appearance of multiple asset price bubbles, a reduction in productivity growth, discouraging savings and exacerbating inequality, and forcing yield starved investors to take on excessive risk. The financial world now finds itself caught between a rock and a hard place, and Edward Chancellor is here to tell us why. In this enriching volume, Chancellor explores the history of interest and its essential function in determining how capital is allocated and priced.

They carry institutional knowledge no org chart can show. And yet they remain unseen, unpromoted, and undervalued-while louder, more visible performers rise past them.Find The Hidden Talent exposes one of the most costly blind spots in modern leadership: the systematic failure to recognise the people who actually make organisations work.Drawing on decades of experience building high-performing teams inside complex, high-risk environments, psychologist and former banking executive Mark Powell reveals why traditional talent models reward confidence over competence, noise over value, and visibility over impact. This is not a book about motivation, personality tests, or "high-potential" labels. It is a practical, psychological guide to seeing what others miss.Inside, you will discover: Why your top performers are rarely your loudest voicesHow modern systems quietly promote the wrong peopleThe psychological signals that reveal true value and reliabilityWhy "potential" is often misidentified and mismanagedHow to build teams that outperform without burning outPowell shows how hidden talent forms the invisible engine of successful organisations-and why ignoring it leads to fragility, disengagement, and failure at scale.Clear-eyed, incisive, and deeply human, Find The Hidden Talent is essential reading for leaders who want results, not theatre; resilience, not churn; and teams that actually deliver when it matters most. The future of work will not be won by those who talk the loudest. It will be won by those who finally learn how to see.

The 100 Trillion Dollar Wealth Transfer
'A thought-provoking read.' -- Financial Times 'Everybody in finance and wealth management should read this book - as soon as possible.' -- Alec Marsh, Spear's Magazine An insider's look into how Generation Z's focus on ethics, climate change and purpose will change capitalism forever. In the next ten years there will be an unprecedented wealth transfer from the so-called 'baby boomer' generation to the young. Never before will so much money - in housing, land, stocks and cash - be shifted so suddenly from one generation to the next, and never before does the next generation feel so differently about the future of the planet. As an investor in this new generation Ken Costa shows how environmental concerns and anxiety about equality and diversity are more than mere slogans; they are driving the future of the markets. So many issues stem from the financial gap between age groups - from cancel culture and fears about wokeness, to Generation Rent, protest movements and re-evaluations of history around subjects such as empire. Costa shows how we can build a more inclusive, purposeful capitalism, shifting focus away from the individual and more towards collaboration, compassion and community. This book shows us what the future of capitalism looks like, and demonstrates how boomers must work with the inspiring young, who see their mission not just to increase value for shareholders, but also to save the planet.

Extinction of Tax as We Know It
This is the first business-fiction novel to tell the real, unfiltered story of tax and finance professionals in what the world believes is the "age of AI".The world is dazzled by automation, ERP upgrades, e-invoicing mandates, and AI breakthroughs. However, within corporations, a different reality unfolds: broken data, political landmines, failed systems, fragile governance, and leaders who are far from prepared for the future they claim to embrace.Extinction of Tax As We Know It pulls you directly into that hidden battlefield. When Maria Mehta becomes CFO of AlphaCorp, she steps into a role surrounded by prestige-and buried in dysfunction. Beneath polished dashboards and confident board presentations lies a messy truth: AlphaCorp is held together by spreadsheets, patchwork data, and decades of unresolved tax and technology debt. And standing firmly against change is Sophia Chan, the brilliant yet evasive Head of Tax who has mastered the art of survival through ambiguity, deflection, and hierarchy. She represents everything that resists transformation-fear, control, and political manoeuvring disguised as expertise. To break the cycle, Maria turns to two unexpected forces: Aldo Maseko, a Gen Z CTO prodigy who sees systems as ecosystems and data as destiny.Abhishek Iyer, a quiet transformation specialist whose past success and painful failure reveal the difference between tools and true orchestration.Together, they unravel a pattern of failing ERPs, incorrect tax setups, collapsing e-invoicing designs, and cross-border risks hidden inside "business-as-usual." As they confront Sophia's passive sabotage, country-team resistance, and boardroom hostility, AlphaCorp transforms into a courtroom-where every meeting feels like testimony, every escalation a verdict.Amid the chaos lies a larger truth: AI will not save organisations that cannot save themselves.Without governance, aligned teams, clean data, and courageous leadership, even the most advanced technologies turn into expensive illusions. This novel doubles as a transformation playbook for the modern enterprise, revealing: Why tax, finance, IT, and operations must evolve into Fusion TeamsWhy the future belongs to Fusion Professionals-those who speak the languages of data, systems, tax, processes, and leadershipWhy e-invoicing will reshape organisational DNAHow AI's hype collides with the harsh reality of organisational unreadinessHow politics destroys transformation long before technology doesThrough corporate warfare, emotional truths, and high-stakes decision-making, Extinction of Tax As We Know It exposes what global professionals live through but rarely speak about. This is the book for: CFOs, tax leaders, ERP teams, technologists, consultants, auditors, transformation professionals, and every ambitious Gen Z or millennial shaping the future of work.If you've ever survived an ERP project, lived through a tax audit, or navigated corporate power games, this book will feel like home. Once you read it, you will never look at tax, technology, leadership, or organisational transformation the same way again.
The Exit Plan
Most entrepreneurs dream of building a company that lasts, but few stop to ask: what happens when it is time to step away? This book challenges the conventional mindset by showing that a business is strongest when it can thrive without its founder. Instead of treating the exit as an afterthought, it reframes it as the ultimate design principle-shaping every decision from valuation to leadership succession. Through vivid case studies, rigorous frameworks, and practical reflection prompts, readers discover why investors value business valuation differently than founders, why systems-not personalities-drive lasting value, and how succession planning for entrepreneurs preserves both profit and legacy. It reveals the hidden traps of waiting too long, neglecting documentation, or clinging too tightly to identity-and offers a clear path to building a company others are eager to buy. This book is written for founders, leaders, and investors who want to understand not just how to grow but how to sell your business on their terms. Whether you are years away from an exit or simply want to design a more resilient, scalable organisation, you will gain clarity on when to sell, who to sell to, and how to protect what matters most. The outcome is more than financial-it is freedom: the ability to step away knowing your company endures, and your legacy remains intact.

Decoded Decisions
Decoded Decisions: Behavioural Finance Meets Artificial Intelligence explores the swiftly changing financial world where technology intersects with psychology. As innovations like smart wallets, robo-advisors, AI-powered trading systems, and algorithmic nudges transform money management, the line between human intuition and machine accuracy becomes less distinct. This book emerges from a profound interest in this new realm-where behavioural economics intersects with digital progress. Through a multidisciplinary perspective, it examines how new technologies are not only altering the mechanics of personal finance but also transforming our understanding of value, choice, and financial health. By applying behavioural finance concepts such as loss aversion, mental accounting, overconfidence, and impulsivity, it explores how these biases are either intensified or mitigated in digital settings. Real-world fintech applications and case studies demonstrate the psychological effects of design decisions-from gamification and predictive analytics to nudges and algorithmic persuasion. Importantly, the book balances optimism about fintech's ability to improve financial literacy and inclusion with a critical examination of the ethical challenges posed by profit-driven platforms. How can we ensure that innovation empowers rather than exploits? What protections are necessary when machines influence decisions traditionally made by personal choice? Ideal for finance students, behavioural economists, fintech developers, policymakers, and curious investors, Decoded Decisions provides practical insights and profound reflections. It encourages readers to not only comprehend the tools of digital finance but to engage with them thoughtfully and deliberately. In a rapidly advancing technological world, the wisest decisions are those made with both intelligence and humanity.
Lombard Street A Description Of The Money Market
Lombard street: A description of the money market offers a penetrating analysis of the financial systems that underpin modern capitalism. Walter Bagehot examines the intricate workings of London's banking network, portraying it as both a powerful and fragile mechanism that drives economic stability and growth. He presents Lombard Street as the beating heart of the global money market, where credit, trust, and liquidity intertwine to sustain commerce. Rejecting purely theoretical discussions, Bagehot grounds his insights in the practical realities of banking institutions, exploring how they manage deposits, loans, and reserves. He exposes the delicate balance between confidence and panic that defines financial life, emphasizing the need for sound policy and disciplined management. His observations on the circulation of capital between agricultural and industrial regions illustrate the interdependence of rural savings and urban enterprise. The work remains a cornerstone in understanding how financial systems evolve under pressure, blending clear economic reasoning with enduring relevance to both scholars and practitioners.

Risk Management for Cryptocurrency Portfolios
Cryptocurrencies have transformed finance by opening new avenues for investment and innovation, while exposing portfolios to extreme volatility, fat tails, liquidity shocks, and shifting regulation. Risk Management for Cryptocurrency Portfolios provides a rigorous, practice-oriented toolkit for this landscape. The book blends postmodern portfolio theory, heavy-tailed statistics, and empirically tested optimization methods into a coherent framework tailored to digital assets.Starting from the data, the authors assemble a consistent set of 40 major tokens and examine hourly performance, stylized facts, and benchmarks. They study stationarity, the non-normal nature of returns, and tail risk using Hill estimators and generalized Pareto modeling and quantify distances between return series to guide diversification. The portfolio core begins with mean-variance analysis, the capital market line, and coherent risk measures. Building on this foundation, the book develops mean-CVaR optimization and equivalent formulations, with MATLAB implementations and step-by-step case studies.Strategy chapters compare long-only and long-short constructions, including Jacobs et al. and Lo-Patel approaches, momentum variants, and portfolios under turnover constraints. Performance is evaluated with maximum drawdown and widely used ratios such as Sharpe, Sortino-Satchell, and the Rachev ratio. The dynamic optimization introduces ARMA(1,1)-GARCH(1,1) models with Student's t-innovations, multivariate t-distributions and t-copulas, and the simulation of return scenarios. Robust optimization addresses model misspecification by treating observed return distributions as uncertain; readers learn box and ellipsoidal uncertainty sets, Kantorovich distances between discrete distributions, and robust CVaR portfolios on historical data. Validation is integral. A backtesting suite consisting of value-at-risk tests, including binomial and traffic-light procedures, plus Kupiec, Christoffersen, and Haas tests, assesses model quality and contrasts historical, dynamic, and robust allocations. Written for practitioners, analysts, researchers, and graduate students, the text is selfcontained and comprehensive. Clear exposition, empirical examples, and ready to run MATLAB code make advanced methods usable in day-to-day portfolio construction. Risk Management for Cryptocurrency Portfolios equips readers with insight and tested techniques needed to build, stress-test and refine crypto portfolios with confidence.

It's About Tyme
Imagine starting with a bold mission in 2012: to achieve financial inclusion through a multi-country bank. Within a decade, this vision becomes one of the fastest-growing fintechs in the world. Now, picture starting this business in South Africa, a country the IMF ranked as the hardest place to do business out of 49 countries surveyed. Imagine having the foresight to partner with a family-owned food retailer to establish a low-cost, physical banking footprint. Such success didn't go unnoticed and one of the world's largest banks acquired the company. A clash of cultures followed and, just four years later, the divestment. Despite the risks, one of South Africa's wealthiest entrepreneurs stepped in to take control. Then came Covid-19. The business nearly hit the wall and shareholders demanded a successor of their choosing be trained. A frantic 217 pitches for fresh capital yielded no success. And then, at the eleventh hour, there was a reprieve as one investor and then another stepped up.Now, imagine launching in the Philippines, replicating and improving what works while designing an entirely new cloud-based banking stack with over 500 Vietnamese developers. Imagine assembling a team from Italy, the US, the UK, South Africa, Vietnam, the Philippines, Australia, India and Zimbabwe. Picture shaping a culture where failure is part of growth, and audacity is the norm, not the exception. Imagine becoming the global poster child for AI in banking and receiving an email in June 2025, informing you that your company is one of Time magazine's Top 100 most influential companies in the world. This incredible story unfolds within the pages of It's About Tyme. As Roger Grobler, a long-standing investor in Tyme puts it, 'Courage and audacity are not just bold strategies - they're the safest. Because playing it safe is, ironically, the riskiest thing you can do.'
How to Listen When Markets Speak
A New York Times bestselling author and leading expert on market risk argues that seismic shifts in the global economy will trigger a multi-trillion-dollar migration of wealth, outlining new rules of investing for the forward-thinking. "I can't tell you how much I learned from How to Listen When Markets Speak. The historical perspectives and insights are something every investor needs to know. Buy this book."--Mark Cuban From Wall Street to the White House, the fantasy of an eventual "return to normal" is still alive and well, nurtured by dangerously outdated theories. But the economic world as we know it--and the rules that govern it--are over. In the coming decade, we'll witness sustained inflation, a series of sovereign and corporate debt crises, and a thundering of capital out of financial assets into hard assets. Few are prepared. Lawrence G. McDonald, founder of the economic research platform The Bear Traps Report, got a real-world education in market risk when, as a Lehman Brothers VP, he watched the firm ignore flashing warning signs before its collapse. His analysis led him to identify twenty-one indicators for gauging the health of an economy and detecting early signals of opportunity and danger. In How to Listen When Markets Speak, McDonald unveils his unique predictive models, connecting surprising dots between past, present, and future and outlining actionable trading ideas for staying a beat ahead of the markets. Readers will learn: - How disastrous Fed policy will collide with an increasingly fragmented geopolitical landscape to keep U.S. inflation near 3-5% for the next decade - How growing demand for oil and gas, underinvestment in urgently needed energy infrastructure, and cozy Russia-Saudi Arabia relations will lift the base price of energy to historic levels - Why hard assets and rare minerals like lithium and cobalt will outperform growth stocks, U.S. treasuries, and overcrowded passive investment strategies--and how to detect bearish and bullish trends in advance - How passive investing and the vehicles intended to democratize finance have fueled bubbles and ideological skew by large market participants, leaving millions of 401(k)s and IRAs at risk - Why America will likely lose its position as a global superpower and holder of the world's premier reserve currency, and may be forced to slash Social Security, Medicare, and military spending Rather than merely doomsaying, How to Listen When Markets Speak equips readers to make sense of our current moment, resist reactionary narratives and baseless analysis, and preserve their wealth in turbulent times. When markets speak, it pays to listen.
Rethinking Taxation for Growth in Latin America and the Caribbean
Rethinking Taxation for Growth in Latin America and the Caribbean: Objectives, Behavioral Responses, and Technological Advances argues for a shift beyond the traditional focus on collection efficiency and equity to explicitly include economic growth as a primary objective. It highlights how taxpayers' behavioral responses and technological advancements reshape the effectiveness and trade-offs of core taxes. The report introduces targeted cash transfers (TCTs) as a powerful new instrument for achieving equity, potentially allowing for more neutral and efficient revenue collection through other taxes like value added tax (VAT). It challenges the conventional view of VAT as inherently regressive in the region's informal economies, suggesting that consumption-based analysis reveals a less clear-cut picture. The report cautions against excessively high standard VAT rates, which can hinder growth, and suggests reevaluating reduced VAT rates in favor of broader base consumption taxes coupled with TCTs.The report argues that the high corporate income tax (CIT) rates in the Latin America and the Caribbean region, coupled with a challenging business environment, incentivize evasion and discourage investment. It advocates for reducing CIT rates to align with other emerging markets, improving enforcement, and exploring public-private partnerships for tax collection.Regarding the personal income tax (PIT), the report notes a narrow base despite high top marginal rates, which may penalize entrepreneurship. It suggests moderately broadening the tax base rather than further increasing top rates. It also proposes focusing on property taxes as a more viable form of wealth taxation, given the prevalence of tangible assets and the increasing feasibility of accurate valuation through technology, contrasting this with the difficulties of taxing highly mobile financial assets. With recommendations for strategic adjustments to VAT and CIT rates, a moderate expansion of the PIT base, and more effective property tax policy, this report provides policy makers, business leaders, and researchers with a practical framework for building more effective, equitable, and growth-oriented tax systems in Latin America and the Caribbean. The analysis is grounded in context-specific insights, encouraging a nuanced approach that considers both behavioral responses and technological progress.
