Taiwan Travelogue: A Novel
臺灣文學第一本 2026國際布克獎得主 2024美國國家圖書獎翻譯文學大獎 昭和臺灣縱貫鐵道美食之旅 楊双子《臺灣漫遊錄》 WINNER OF THE 2024 NATIONAL BOOK AWARD FOR TRANSLATED LITERATURE LONGLISTED FOR THE 2026 INTERNATIONAL BOOKER PRIZE A bittersweet story of love between two women, nested in an artful exploration of language, history, and power May 1938. The young novelist Aoyama Chizuko has sailed from her home in Nagasaki, Japan, and arrived in Taiwan. She's been invited there by the Japanese government ruling the island, though she has no interest in their official banquets or imperialist agenda. Instead, Chizuko longs to experience real island life and to taste as much of its authentic cuisine as her famously monstrous appetite can bear. Soon a Taiwanese woman--who is younger even than she is, and who shares the characters of her name--is hired as her interpreter and makes her dreams come true. The charming, erudite, meticulous Chizuru arranges Chizuko's travels all over the Land of the South and also proves to be an exceptional cook. Over scenic train rides and braised pork rice, lively banter and winter melon tea, Chizuko grows infatuated with her companion and intent on drawing her closer. But something causes Chizuru to keep her distance. It's only after a heartbreaking separation that Chizuko begins to grasp what the &something& is. Disguised as a translation of a rediscovered text by a Japanese writer, this novel was a sensation on its first publication in Mandarin Chinese in 2020 and won Taiwan's highest literary honor, the Golden Tripod Award. Taiwan Travelogue unburies lost colonial histories and deftly reveals how power dynamics inflect our most intimate relationships.

The Mabinogion
Celtic mythology, Arthurian romance, and an intriguing interpretation of British history--these are just some of the themes embraced by the anonymous authors of the eleven tales that make up the Welsh medieval masterpiece known as the Mabinogion. They tell of Gwydion the shape-shifter, who can create a woman out of flowers; of Math the magician whose feet must lie in the lap of a virgin; of hanging a pregnant mouse and hunting a magical boar. Dragons, witches, and giants live alongside kings and heroes, and quests of honour, revenge, and love are set against the backdrop of a country struggling to retain its independence. This new translation, the first for thirty years, recreates the storytelling world of medieval Wales and re-invests the tales with the power of performance. Yellow Car Paradox A quiet, unsettling story about the memories that shape us, and the things we notice only too late.
'Every morning, a yellow car waits outside Josiah's apartment. It never moves too soon.It never leaves too late.No matter where he goes, it is always there. At first, it is ordinary. Then, it becomes impossible to ignore.A car that watches. A pattern that doesn't belong.A young man named Josiah is a twenty-year-old student at the University of Santo Tomas, ambitious and courageous. Political Science isn't just a course, it is the foundation for good governance. He dreams of leadership, not for applause, but for redemption. Yet, even as he working hard toward his dreams, the yellow car remains there. It appears at the same time and place as if part of his morning routine. No one else notices it, and its stillness is mysterious. Is it a coincidence, or is there something dangerous?Yellow Car Paradox is a thoughtful, suspenseful exploration of destiny, leadership, and the unseen forces that follow us. It asks whether we notice the patterns around us, whether we act when opportunities appear, and how much the quiet moments of observation-by ourselves or by others-can influence the trajectory of a life. Through Josiah's journey, readers are drawn into a story that is as much about ambition and service as it is about the subtle mysteries that surround us every day."Some things follow you... and some things wait for you."This is a work of fiction. Names of places and institutions are used for narrative purposes. Any resemblance to real persons or events is coincidental.
The Promise
It was always the little things that Father knew gentiles could get away with but Jews, like him, couldn't. He was under no illusions that the family's end was near, and sure enough, it came. But his eldest child was determined to cling on to the one thing that held his family tightly together. He would keep the promise.
Miner's Lad
With the grinding sounds of the pitheads ringing in his ears, the boy climbed and climbed the mountain, batting the ferns away with his hands, marvelling at the tiny purple foxglove heads. When he was far above the lines of dreary grey houses, he stopped and sat on the big rock that jutted out of the mountainside. Squinting out across the valley, he breathed in and closed his eyes. For many of the mining communities in South Wales, life sped by under the heaviness of swinging picks and grinding gears. Through snapshots of life, we see how young men are influenced, how they grow, how they feel and how they watch those they love delve deep into the earth day after day. We stand beside our boy as he navigates his early life under the shadow of the greying mountains, between the lines and rows of terraced houses in the valley. Step by step through his life, his valley roots have followed him and remain ingrained within him.
35 Kilos
In any matter of the case, she would be needing an extra 8000 if renting a house. If the circumstances showed that she would have to move, she would have a serious money problem. So later, maybe within an hour, Patrizia would bend down and try to steal a telephone from the bag placed on the floor on the side of her just to get by the next month. The airplane pilots did not look that much out of the window in ordinary airplanes, and the luggage was normally not stored at the front of the airplane as in this story. Nor did the company stewardesses wear dots on their neckerchiefs. "35 KILOS" is Aaness' second book after the highly priced "Happy Belated Birthday." Aaness is pushing her love for Paul Auster in this strangely composed short story that takes place in an airport, asking, "How are the passengers connected, what stories do they carry, and what actions and relations impact and protect them?" This book is a thoughtful meditation on how the past shapes us without defining us. For readers seeking a deeply personal story that resonates on a human level, Happy Belated Birthday is a must-read. Echoes of a Silent Cradle
"Echoes of a Silent Cradle" is a well narrated story that has interesting and varied layers that add to the story's subtleties. The story is interesting for its depiction of unconventional themes of gender equality and of twists of love and life's ardours set against an orthodox and conventional backdrop. There are visual qualities in the narration that attract and sustain the reader's interest. Human relationships that seem to appear by chance, are controlled by an unknown destiny. The references to the Hindu gods, the philosophies of religious justice, and the fate of the characters written in the stars are well-etched. The characters put on flesh and blood and are easily recognizable and identifiable as people living amongst us.
Parvon Zin's Universe
Poltox... The very mention of the name conjures up fear in most species. This warrior society has a deserved reputation. The Belatan Banking Guild use Andrend Poltox exclusively in their Debt Recovery Branch. The Anunnaki use them as security guards. Poltox mercenary units are used by the Boldonian Trading Guilds during and after hostile takeover conflicts. The galaxy as a whole sees them as mindless savage thugs. The Poltox don't correct that assumption. They are happy to let anyone think what they like. In reality the Poltox have a wide and varied culture. Not all can be warriors. The non-warrior castes keep the society running, providing weapons, engineering, agriculture, scientific research, and medical expertise. Every Poltox believes totally in the afterlife, a place called Loplen. A great feasting hall where worthy warriors are taken up by the fabled winged Jenpen. Beautiful female warriors to dine at Crangg's table. Feasting and fighting throughout eternity. The non-warrior Poltox clans have their own feasting halls where they live out eternity conducting whatever wondrous things they did before. Disaster struck the Poltox in the form of a planet-wide famine. An ultra-fast-growing small carnivore called Limies was found on a nearby planet. They are harvested by the hundreds of thousands. These little creatures at first seemed like a blessing. Then they started attacking the Poltox in such numbers that no matter how good the warrior was, they were overwhelmed and eaten. Eighty percent of the Poltox population were killed. Only two clans remained. The Nool and the Andrend. The two clans were so close they had thought of forming one powerful unit. The Andrend had volunteered to be enhanced, strength- and reflexes-wise, to help deal with the tiny terrors. The drugs affect the Andrend's minds. Making them aggressive and arrogantly dismissive of their now, in their mind, 'lesser cousins'. Brutalised after their blood-filled grim two-year battle with the Limies, they cannot relate to the Nool. Fights start. The enhanced Andrend kills without remorse. They start to treat the weaker Nool like slaves. Hatred builds and becomes entrenched. War breaks out between the two clans. The only way it will end is with the total eradication of the loser. Their mindset can see no other way. It will take an outsider's view to find a solution.
Forgotten... Poetry & Prose
'SiredYou read to me tales about lost love, I sing to you poetry that sighs of hate. You caress my skin with tender abundance While purgatory loss sets my heart aflame. Yet ashes don't burn, do they now? An embodiment of carmine words you crave- Inked upon my skin, torn pages of a book; Lethal, vermin, beautiful and bitter- One letter for another, We are sired to each other.
Call Me Spud
In Call Me Spud, Stephen Rowley examines the influence of the violence of the Northern Ireland Troubles and its inevitable repercussions on the human psyche. The novel traces the dramatic consequences of the common brutality which was witnessed during the province's bloodiest years, and more specifically, the exceptional savagery of West Belfast's infamous gang of serial killers. This work of fiction follows the daily routine of a police constable engaged in the arduous task of pursuing and eventually capturing the killers. The impact of their violence results in both individual and collective trauma as the novel moves beyond the immediate geographical boundaries of Northern Ireland to the south of England. The shift in location points to the universality of violence and its aftermath.

Nothing the Fists Can't Fix and Other Stories
In these thirteen remarkable stories, Paul Maxton delves deep into the human condition, exploring both its tenderness and brutality while exposing the fragility of the mind. Set against the backdrop of Scotland's islands and cities, misfits and miscreants have a tenuous grip on reality, resorting to strange, often extreme, behaviour to express their hopes and desires. A man grapples with his anger management, leading to destructive consequences. A burnt-out soldier takes revenge on a friend during a goose-hunting trip. An alcoholic nurse, on her final warning, is consumed by news of an earthquake. A workaholic manager finds a Triumph Bonneville irresistible during a drug-fueled binge. A boy's fierce imagination draws him toward a mother he both loathes and longs for. Bursting with originality and dark humour, Maxton's stories are unnerving, inventive, and sharply attuned to the nuances of speech. This powerful, uncompromising debut collection delivers punch after punch, creating a world of love, loss, and longing that irresistibly draws the reader in.

A Tasmanian Odyssey
If readers with an interest in the medical and social sciences are prepared to clear the mind of 21st-century advancement, they are welcomed deep into the fictional adult and child minds of the period 1914-1947, existing without it! Adults survive economic depression and the First and Second World Wars with spirited humour and tolerance-if at times sparse-as a buffer to social and religious prejudice. Their children's world view of 'seen not heard, spare the rod and spoil the child' is met with curiosity and vivid imaginings reserved only for child minds. The setting: suburbs of the city of Hobart, capital of Tasmania (once Van Diemen's Land, the 19th-century British colonial settlement of choice for recalcitrant British criminals, adult and child alike, during the transportation period ending in 1858). The written art: narrative style is predominantly sub-plots and flashback techniques, now mirrored in 21st-century filmmakers' images and captions in the creation of film narratives. Reader perseverance with this written art style may well be worth the journey!
