  • Nelson's Arctic VoyageNelson's Arctic Voyage Goodwin, Peter Adlard Coles Nautical 出版 2019/7/16出版

A detailed account of the Royal Navy's near fatal expedition into the polar regions in 1773--with the young Horatio Nelson on board. In the summer of 1773 the 14-year old Horatio Nelson took part in an expedition to the Arctic, which came close to ending his naval career before it had begun. Two bomb vessels, HMS Racehorse and Carcass, were fitted out and strengthened under the command of Captain Hon. Constantine Phipps for an expedition to find the Northwest Passage. It was an extremely cold Arctic summer and the ships became locked in ice unable to cut their way out for days until the wind changed and the ice broke up. The ships were eventually extricated and sailed home, and the legend of Horatio Nelson began. During the voyage, the young Nelson had command of one of the smaller boats of the ships, a four-oared cutter manned by twelve seamen. In this he helped save the crew of one of the Racehorse's boats from an attack by a herd of enraged walruses. He also had a more famous encounter with a polar bear while attempting to obtain a bearskin as a present for his father, an exploit that later became part of the Nelson legend.Drawing on the ship's journals, and expedition commander Phipps' log from the National Archives, Nelson's Arctic Voyage creates a fascinating picture of the expedition and life on board. Using the ships' muster books it also details the ship's crews, explaining the different roles and ranks aboard. Nelson's Arctic Voyage is illustrated using the ship's drawings, charts, as well as objects used aboard, accompanied by a navigational chart of the route taken. Nelson's Arctic Voyage also examines the concept of naval exploration as put forth by Joseph Banks and the Royal Society. The near failure of the expedition as a result of poor planning--with potentially tragic results--demonstrates the difficulties and uncertainties of such expeditions. Nelson's Arctic Voyage also provides a unique glimpse at a great naval commander at the earliest stage of his career, analyzing how the experience might have shaped his later career and attitudes. Other great captains and voyages are discussed alongside Nelson, including Captain Cook and his exploration of the south seas and the later ill-fated northern journeys of Franklin and Shackleton.

  • The SuccessorThe Successor Van Dijk, Willemijn Baylor Univ Pr 出版 2019/7/16出版

Politics, prestige, poweronster, angel, emperor.Tiberius?unique position as the unrivaled leader of the ancient Roman Empire has not prevented him from being pushed to the sidelines of historical interest. In The Successor, Willemijn van Dijk seeks to remedy this relegation in her compelling portrait of a complicated ancient ruler.Tiberius inherited power from the legendary Augustus as the Roman Empire first successor. His influence stretched from northern Africa to the southern Netherlands and from Spain to Syria. Yet despite its many challenges, this vast area would not remain unmanaged for long. In his twenty-three-year reign as emperor, Tiberius consolidated power in the new form of government his adoptive father had founded, and in doing so he established the Julio-Claudian dynasty, a line that would rule Rome for half a century. The story of Tiberius is one of intrigue. Van Dijk draws readers onto backstreets and into back rooms, bringing Rome to life with vivid portrayals of what it was like to stand on the great Palatine Hill or by the banks of the Tiber. Against this vibrant urban tapestry, van Dijk weaves together the gripping narrative of Tiberius?rise complicated game of power, politics, and conspiracy. Van Dijk strips away the varnish of myth to paint an accurate, incisive picture of a man who at the late age of fifty-five became the greatest commander-in-chief of his day.Vivid, scandalous, and thought-provoking, The Successor tells the story of a somber man figure neither wholly sympathetic nor entirely repulsiveho became an emperor, and of an emperor who became a tyrant.

  • Herodotus and the Question WhyHerodotus and the Question Why Pelling, Christopher Baker & Taylor Books 出版 2019/7/15出版

In the 5th century BCE, Herodotus wrote the first known history to break from the tradition of Homeric storytelling, basing his text on empirical observations and arranging them systematically. Herodotus and the Question Why offers a comprehensive examination of the methods behind the Histories and the challenge of documenting human experiences, from the Persian Wars to cultural traditions. In lively, accessible prose, Christopher Pelling explores such elements as reconstructing the mentalities of storyteller and audience alike; distinctions between the human and the divine; and the evolving concepts of freedom, democracy, and individualism. Pelling traces the similarities between Herodotus's approach to physical phenomena (Why does the Nile flood?) and landmark events (Why did Xerxes invade Greece? And why did the Greeks win?), delivering a fascinating look at the explanatory process itself. The cultural forces that shaped Herodotus's thinking left a lasting legacy for us, making Herodotus and the Question Why especially relevant as we try to record and narrate the stories of our time and to fully understand them.

  • The Silencing of Slaves in Early Jewish and Christian TextsThe Silencing of Slaves in Early Jewish and Christian Texts Charles, Ronald Baker & Taylor Books 出版 2019/7/17出版

The Silencing of Slaves in Early Jewish and Christian Texts analyzes a large corpus of early Christian texts and Pseudepigraphic materials to understand how the authors of these texts used, abused and silenced enslaved characters to articulate their own social, political, and theological visions. The focus is on excavating the texts "from below" or "against the grain" in order to notice the slaves, and in so doing, to problematize and (re)imagine the narratives. Noticing the slaves as literary iterations means paying attention to broader theological, ideological, and rhetorical aims of the texts within which enslaved bodies are constructed. The analysis demonstrates that by silencing slaves and using a rhetoric of violence, the authors of these texts contributed to the construction of myths in which slaves functioned as a useful trope to support the combined power of religion and empire. Thus was created not only the perfect template for the rise and development of a Christian discourse of slavery, but also a rationale for subsequent violence exercised against slave bodies within the Christian Empire. The study demonstrates the value of using the tools and applying the insights of subaltern studies to the study of the Pseudepigrapha and in early Christian texts. This volume will be of interest not only to scholars of early Christianity, but also to those working on the history of slavery and subaltern studies in antiquity.

  • Reading Papyri, Writing Ancient HistoryReading Papyri, Writing Ancient History Bagnall, Roger S. Baker & Taylor Books 出版 2019/7/17出版

Since its first publication in 1995, Reading Papyri, Writing Ancient History has proved to be an invaluable resource to students of the ancient world looking to integrate papyrological evidence into their research. In the quarter century since its publication, changes in the research environment have affected papyrology like other fields. Although the core philological methods of the field remain in place, the field has increasingly embraced languages other than Greek and Latin, with considerable impact on the Hellenistic and Late Antique periods. Digital tools have increased the ease and speed of access, with profound effects on research choices, and digital imaging and materiality studies have brought questions about the physical form of written materials to the fore. In this fully revised new edition, Bagnall adds to the previous analysis a portrait of how the use of papyri for historical research has developed during recent decades. Updated with the latest research and insights from the author, the volume guides historians in how to use these scattered and often badly damaged documents, and to interpret them in order to create a full and diverse picture of ancient society and culture. This second edition of Reading Papyri, Writing Ancient History continues to offer students and researchers of the ancient world a critical resource in navigating how to use these ancient texts in their research.

  • Tourism and the Changing Face of BritainTourism and the Changing Face of Britain Brodie, Allan Baker & Taylor Books 出版 2019/7/15出版

A week on the beach, a day at the spa, a hike in the hills—tourism is taken for granted today, but holidays used to be limited to a handful of wealthy people. Over the past five hundred years, it has played a significant role in the shaping of modern Britain. This book traces the story of tourism in Britain from the Middle Ages to the present day. It shows how holidays and the pursuit of leisure have created destinations—sometimes entire towns—and radically reshaped the countryside. Beautifully illustrated throughout, this wide-ranging study examines topics such as pilgrimages, spas, and seaside holidays as it follows the development of tourism from an elite experience to a mass enthusiasm.

  • Freedom MusicFreedom Music Wilson, Jen Baker & Taylor Books 出版 2019/7/15出版

Freedom Music traces the history of how early African American and jazz music came to Wales. From Abolitionist collaborations, minstrelsy, ragtime, blues, hot music, and swing, Jen Wilson shows us an innovative side of Wales previously hidden from history. This music appealed to Wales’ vibrant youth and those not part of the mainstream culture of chapels, choirs, and male voice choirs. Wilson unfolds this musical history by examining women’s emancipation, gender politics, social history, and Welsh culture. She looks at cultural innovations by women entrepreneurs during and from the First World War. Wilson also focuses on the history of African American music in Wales and highlights the widespread misogyny and discrimination within jazz music in Wales. The stories within Freedom Music will attract not only social and political historians, but also feminists, jazz fans, and general readers fascinated by the cast of characters who played and danced to the music.

  • The English Landscape GardenThe English Landscape Garden Symes, Michael Baker & Taylor Books 出版 2019/7/15出版

The eighteenth-century phenomenon of the English landscape garden was so widespread that even today, when so much has been built over or otherwise changed, examples remain throughout England. Although seemingly natural, the English landscape was generally the result of considerable effort, contrivance, and design skill, the glorious outcome of “the art that conceals art.” Taking many forms, the landscape garden might involve digging lakes, raising or leveling hills, or planting vast numbers of trees—whatever was required to show nature to best advantage. Richly illustrated throughout, this book uncovers the complex, multi-layered, and wide-ranging story of the landscape garden in England.
