  • The Gentleman's DaughterThe Gentleman's Daughter Vickery, Amanda Yale Univ Pr 出版 2003/8/11出版

What was the life of an eighteenth-century British genteel woman like? In this lively and controversial book, Amanda Vickery invokes women own accounts of their intimate and their public lives to argue that in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries the scope of female experience did not diminish?in fact, quite the reverse. Refuting the common understanding that in Georgian times the daughters of merchants, the wives of lawyers, and the sisters of gentlemen lost female freedoms and retreated into their homes, Vickery shows that these women experienced expanding social and intellectual horizons. As they embraced a world far beyond the boundaries of their own parishes through their tireless writing and ravenous reading, genteel women also enjoyed an array of emerging new public arenas?assembly rooms, concert series, theater seasons, circulating libraries, day-time lectures, urban walks, and pleasure gardens.Based on the letters, diaries, and account books of over one hundred women from commercial, professional, and gentry families, this book transforms our understanding of the position of women in Georgian England. In their own words, they tell of their sometimes humorous, sometimes moving experiences and desires, and of their many roles, including kinswoman, wife, mother, housekeeper, consumer, hostess, and member of polite society. By the nineteenth century, family duties continued to dominate women lives, yet, Vickery contends, the public profile of privileged women had reached unprecedented heights.

  • SallustSallust Syme, Ronald Baker & Taylor Books 出版 2002/5/1出版

With this classic book, Sir Ronald Syme became the first twentieth-century scholar to place Sallust - whom Tacitus called the most brilliant Roman historian - in his social, political, and literary context. Previous scholars treated Sallust as a mere political hack or pamphleteer, but Syme's text makes important connections between the politics of the Republic and Sallust's literary achievement, revealing a historian unbiased by partisanship. In a new foreword, Ronald Mellor delivers one of the most thorough biographical essays of Sir Ronald Syme in English. He places Sallust in the context of Syme's other works and details the progression of Sallustian studies since and as a result of Syme's work.

  • The Invention of CelebrityThe Invention of Celebrity Lilti, Antoine Polity Pr 出版 2017/7/5出版

Frequently perceived as a characteristic of modern culture, the phenomenon of celebrity has much older roots. In this illuminating new book cultural historian Antoine Lilti shows that the mechanisms of celebrity were developed in Europe during the Enlightenment, well before films, yellow journalism and television, and then flourished during the Romantic period on both sides of the Atlantic. Figures from across the arts like Voltaire, Garrick and Liszt were all veritable celebrities in their time, arousing curiosity and passionate loyalty from their "fans." In Paris as in London, in Berlin as in New York, the rise of the press, new advertising techniques and the marketing of leisure brought a profound transformation in the visibility of celebrities: private lives were now very much on public show. Nor was politics spared this cultural upheaval: Marie-Antoinette, George Washington and Napoleon all experienced a political world transformed by the new demands of celebrity. And when the people suddenly appeared on the revolutionary scene, it was no longer enough to be legitimate, it was crucial to be popular too. Lilti retraces the profound social upheaval precipitated by the rise of celebrity and explores the ambivalence felt towards this new phenomenon. Jean Jacques Rousseau's career is an exemplary case. A celebrated and adulated writer, Rousseau ended up cursing the effects of his "disastrous celebrity," marred by the feeling that he had become a public figure whom people everywhere could fashion as they wished. Both sought after and denounced, celebrity evolved as the modern form of personal prestige, assuming the role that glory played in the aristocratic world in a new age of democracy and evolving forms of media. To this day, it is of course a type of glory whose value is still disputed. Lilti's perceptive history uncovers the birth of celebrity in the 18th century, while at the same time shining valuable light on the continuing importance of celebrity in today?s world.

  • Coin, Kirk, Class and KinCoin, Kirk, Class and Kin Beals, M. H. Peter Lang Pub Inc 出版 2011/3/17出版

There are many detailed accounts of nineteenth-century emigrants, of their journeys and settlements abroad ?but what of those they left behind? This book delves into the heart of Georgian Britain to explore the role that the men and women of the Scottish Borders played in the mass emigration of the early nineteenth century. Although most never departed themselves, their perceptions of wealth, poverty, morality and community shaped the flow of emigrants from the rural south to the wide and expanding British Empire, as well as its North American rival, the United States. Scouring the records of grand estates, humble Kirks, flamboyant newspapers and family correspondences, the author returns the Scottish Borders to the centre of Scotland agricultural, industrial and demographic revolutions. Standing on the sharp edge of rural transformation, the Borders played both archetype and exception, pioneering the way from a regional past to an imperial future.

  • The Transjordanian PalimpsestThe Transjordanian Palimpsest Hutton, Jeremy M. Baker & Taylor Books 出版 2009/6/15出版

The biblical imagery surrounding Jordan River crossings is the product of a complex process of development. This study analyzes several passages in the Former Prophets (Josh.-2 Kings) from a literary perspective, and argues that the text presents Transjordan as liminal in Israel history. The study then traces the process of redactional development in Samuel-Kings that led to this literary symbolism, and proposes a hypothesis featuring the repeated updating of texts, beginning early in Israel monarchy and continuing until the final formation of the Deuteronomistic History.

  • Memories of 1968Memories of 1968 Cornils, Ingo (EDT) Baker & Taylor Books 出版 2010/6/30出版

The 1968 events were profoundly international in character, transcending any one national context and interacting with other movements across the world. Yet the way these events are remembered is often delimited by the national cultural or political experience and is cut off from its broader international dimension. The purpose of this volume is to examine the emory?of 1968 across different national settings, looking at the cases of France, Germany, Italy, the United States, Mexico and China. How has 1968 been (re)produced and/or contested within different national cultures and how do these processes reflect national preoccupations with order, political violence, individual freedom, youth culture and self-expression? How has the memory of 1968 been narrated, framed and interpreted in different places and in different disciplines? Is there a collective memory of 1968 and does this memory cross national boundaries? By juxtaposing representations of 1968 from across a range of national cultures and by examining the processes by which 1968 is remembered, this book aims to open up the memory of 1968 to a more diverse international perspective, one that more closely reflects the dynamics of the events themselves. The papers collected in this volume are selected from the proceedings of a conference entitled emories of 1968: International Perspectives?that was held at the University of Leeds in 2008.
