  • Sculpture, the Reliefs from the TheaterSculpture, the Reliefs from the Theater Sturgeon, Mary C. Baker & Taylor Books 出版 1977/12/1出版

The remodeling of the theater at ancient Corinth in the 2nd century A.D. included lavish decorations, the chief of which were three dramatic friezes. In publishing them this book presents the most ambitious sculptural program known among theaters on the Greek mainland, and indeed one of the more elaborate decorative schemes among published theaters of the Roman empire. The friezes (the Gigantomachy, the Amazonomachy, and the Labors of Herakles) are presented each in turn with a discussion of its position in Greek art and a stylistic analysis, followed by a catalogue of the pieces arranged as far as possible in the proposed sequence of relief slabs. There follows a discussion of known theater friezes throughout the classical world and of the Corinth scaenae frons as restored by the author.

"This splendid work of scholarship . . . sums up with economy and power all that the written record so far deciphered has to tell about the ancient and complementary civilizations of Babylon and Assyria."dward B. Garside,New York Times Book ReviewAncient Mesopotamiahe area now called Iraqas received less attention than ancient Egypt and other long-extinct and more spectacular civilizations. But numerous small clay tablets buried in the desert soil for thousands of years make it possible for us to know more about the people of ancient Mesopotamia than any other land in the early Near East.Professor Oppenheim, who studied these tablets for more than thirty years, used his intimate knowledge of long-dead languages to put together a distinctively personal picture of the Mesopotamians of some three thousand years ago. Following Oppenheim's death, Erica Reiner used the author's outline to complete the revisions he had begun."To any serious student of Mesopotamian civilization, this is one of the most valuable books ever written."eonard Cottrell,Book Week"Leo Oppenheim has made a bold, brave, pioneering attempt to present a synthesis of the vast mass of philological and archaeological data that have accumulated over the past hundred years in the field of Assyriological research."amuel Noah Kramer,ArchaeologyA. Leo Oppenheim, one of the most distinguished Assyriologists of our time, was editor in charge of theAssyrian Dictionary of the Oriental Institute and John A. Wilson Professor of Oriental Studies at the University of Chicago.

  • CorinthCorinth Herbert, Sharon Baker & Taylor Books 出版 1977/9/1出版

Inferior clays and glazes, unsuited to the red-figure style, means that the indigenous production of red-figure vases in Corinth was very limited. However for about 75 years, in the middle of the 5th century B.C., Corinthian potters tried to imitate the Athenian fashion and this book catalogues 186 pieces of their work. The author discusses the reasons for the production of Corinthian red figure even in limited quantities. Six painters are identified as responsible for at least half the known pieces. Thirteen deposits provide chronological evidence to supplement that of the painting style. The volume serves to bring forward a small but significant segment of the non-Attic pottery industries, and should stimulate interest in other unpublished, unreported examples. All items in the catalogue are illustrated in photographs; line drawings are used to demonstrate details of technique.

  • The Greek and Persian Wars 500-323 B CThe Greek and Persian Wars 500-323 B C Cassin-Scott, Jack Osprey Pub Co 出版 1977/6/1出版

In the early 5th century BC, after the fall of the Lydian Empire, the Persian Wars began. It was an ideological conflict which pitted a proud, democratic, freedom-loving people against a tyrannical and mighty empire. The stories of the many battles fought between the Greeks and the Persians are here spendidly brought to life by Jack Cassin-Scott, who details the tactics, organisation and uniforms of the armies of both sides in a volume featuring numerous illustrations and museum photographs, plus eight full page colour plates superbly drawn by the author himself.

  • Selected Political Speeches of Cicero on the Command of Cnaeus Pompeius Against Lucius SerSelected Political Speeches of Cicero on the Command of Cnaeus Pompeius Against Lucius Ser Cicero, Marcus Tullius Penguin Classics 出版 1977/6/1出版

As the Roman Republic lurched to its close, amid corruption, ruthless power struggles and gross inequality, Cicero produced some of the most stirring and eloquent speeches ever written. Whether he is quashing the Catiline conspiracy, defending the poet Archais or railing against Mark Anthony in the Philippics - The magnificent speeches in defense of liberty that cost him his life - cicero vividly evokes for us the cut and thrust of the Roman assembly, Senate and court rooms. This excellent modern translation also enables readers to understand why Cicero was for centuries a major influence on prose writers and political thinkers of ever kind. • PausaniasPausanias Pausanias Baker & Taylor Books 出版 1977/6/1出版

Pausanias, born probably in Lydia in Asia Minor, was a Greek of the 2nd century CE, about 120?180, who travelled widely not only in Asia Minor, Palestine, Egypt and North Africa, but also in Greece and in Italy, including Rome. He left a description of Greece in ten books, which is like a topographical guidebook or tour of Attica, the Peloponnese, and central Greece, filled out with historical accounts and events and digressions on facts and wonders of nature. His chief interest was the monuments of art and architecture, especially the most famous of them; the accuracy of his descriptions of these is proved by surviving remains. The Loeb Classical Library edition of Pausanias is in five volumes; the fifth volume contains maps, plans, illustrations, and a general index.

  • Terracotta LampsTerracotta Lamps Broneer, Oscar Baker & Taylor Books 出版 1977/3/1出版

A well-ordered catalogue of all the terracotta lamps excavated between 1952 and 1967 by the University of Chicago in and around the sanctuary of Poseidon at Isthmia. The most important and complete pieces are presented with short descriptions and illustration while the fragments are merely listed. Most of the finds are from the first century A.D. and were imported from Corinth (Corinthian type XVI). Later in the century these imports were replaced by a local product, found in huge quantities around the temple of Palaimon (1221 pieces are catalogued). These 'cult lamps' present the major new type from Isthmia as most of the other pieces published are well-known elsewhere. The entire assemblage is grouped into four chronological periods: classical Greek lamps, mainly used in the Poseidon sanctuary; Hellenistic lamps down to the Mummius destruction of 146 B.C.; Roman lamps dating from 44 B.C. to the third century A.D.; and a miscellaneous group of Late Roman lamps, down to about the sixth century A.D.

  • ItaliansItalians Barzini, Luigi Touchstone Books 出版 1977/3/1出版

In this consummate portrait of the Italian people, bestselling author, publisher, journalist, and politician Luigi Barzini delves deeply into the Italian national character, discovering both its great qualities and its imperfections. Barzini is startlingly frank as he examines "the two Italies": the one that created and nurtured such luminaries as Dante Alighieri, St. Thomas of Aquino, and Leonardo da Vinci; the other, feeble and prone to catastrophe, backward in political action if not in thought, "invaded, ravaged, sacked, and humiliated in every century." Deeply ambivalent, Barzini approaches his task with a combination of love, hate, disillusion, and affectionate paternalism, resulting in a completely original, thoughtful, and probing picture of his countrymen.
