Theatricality and the Arts
Theatricality and the Arts presents a series of investigations of the notion of 'theatricality'. Primarily, theatricality concerns that which pertains to theatre, but the term has always carried with it the potentially pejorative associations of exaggeration and fakery. The essays here question and contest such associations. The book is divided into four sections which together provide a comprehensive interrogation of theatricality. The four sections begin with multimedia, where theatricality is examined in relation to mixed modes of media (internet art, painting, performance and digital display). A second section takes a philosophical approach to questions of theatricality. A third section looks at art, broadly speaking, but also at the historical contexts of art, photography and other media (literature, film, music). A final section features reflections on theatre and cinema, often in conjunction. Considered as a whole, the collection contributes to debates on theatricality in various fields, while also enabling a cross-examination of approaches to the topic.
Edges of Noir
Edges of Noir challenges the notion that noir film nearly vanished after 1958 until its subsequent "neo-noir" revival between 1973 and 1981. The 1960s, regardless of critical neglect, include some of the most provocative films of the post-World War II decades. Often formally disruptive and experimental, films including Shock Corridor (1963), Mirage (1965), and Seconds (1966) evoke controversial issues of the era, deriving dynamic influences amongst exploitation cinema, sensationalistic American B movies, and the European New Wave movement. Whether the focus is on nuclear destruction, mind control, or surveillance, late noir films, above all else, vividly portray the collective fears from the time.

Under Ten Million? Anything’s Possible!
The indie horror/fantasy/sci-fi scene has waned slightly since peaking around 2016/2017 ), the accent now firmly on "mockbusters" or disaster movies to the extent that everything else (horror and sci-fi) has been shunted into the sidelines. By indie, I refer to those films made by Asylum (The Global Asylum), Full Moon, Cinetel Films, Castel Films Romania, Nu Image and a host of other names unfamiliar to the average fan. Low-budget features can be produced by the big boys; some hit the jackpot, others fall by the wayside, but at least they're being made. These days, with up to (and over) $200 million being splashed out on the likes of Kong: Skull Island, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Transformers: The Last Knight, Pacific Rim, Godzilla: King of the Monsters and all those superhero escapades, 10 million can feel like small change, so it's that figure that I've kept to as the ceiling to the movies contained within this volume; the majority of films described in the following pages fall far, far short of that figure. . Independent film companies exist in a totally different kind of cinematic universe, quite happy to appeal to its niche audience, providing them (via DVD, TV, streaming, film conventions, FrightFests or a very limited and selected cinema release) with a never-ending supply of cut-price goodies and bypassing the masses, most of who are completely unaware of their existence. Cameron's Avatar? Yeah, great movie. Jim Wynorski's Shockwave? Who? What? Battle Los Angeles? Loved it. Battle of Los Angeles? Eh? Thought there was only Battle Los Angeles. The 7 Adventures of Sinbad? Sorry -surely you mean The 7th Voyage of Sinbad. Mega Piranha? Well, I've heard of Piranha but Mega Piranha? Jurassic City? Are you referring to Jurassic World? For those of us weary of the pretentious, who have become blas矇 to the over-hyped and indifferent to the bloated, are put off by the constant trumpeting surrounding the latest innovations in the field of special effects (and some turn out to be not all that special), or have tired of the parade of self-gratulatory A-listers, products like Hydra, Ice Twisters, Evil Angel, Lake Mungo, Dark Circles, May, The Dinosaur Project, Dr. Moreau's House of Pain, Howl, Ogre, Bigfoot, Autumn, Reptisaurus, Dark Angel: The Ascent, Age of Dinosaurs, Flight 7500, The Reef, Alien Dawn, The Blackout and 2-Headed Shark Attack are like a breath of fresh cinematic air. These features hark back in many ways to the innocence, zeal and creativeness displayed in the fantasy output of the '50s and '60s, the genre's golden decades. Disaster, end-of-world, outer space, aliens, vampires, werewolves, zombies, teen horror, Frankenstein, serial killer, slasher/splatter, torture-porn, psychological drama, medical horror, other worlds, ghosts, mad doctors, the supernatural, asylums, haunted houses, dinosaurs, mutated insects, lost/found footage, weather formations, giant reptiles and mega sharks---you name it, it's probably been covered by an indie outfit somewhere; there's something to cater to everyone's tastes, a tasty diet of enriching, altogether more divergent, fodder which otherwise would never have been made or seen the light of day. After all, would any of the big motion picture companies take the financial risk of tackling something as unconventional as The Human Centipede (First Sequence) and its two disgusting sequels? I think not. And as for Nude Nuns with Big Guns ...!

Employing tactics that ranged from representing the dispossessed on the screen to redistributing state-controlled resources through bootlegging, these film workers explored ideas and practices that simultaneously challenged repressive rule and pushed the limits of the cinematic medium. Drawing on archival research, film analysis, and interviews, Hieyoon Kim examines how their work foregrounds a utopian vision of democracy where the ruled represent themselves and access resources free from state suppression. The first book to offer a history of film activism in post-1945 South Korea, Celluloid Democracy shows how Korean film workers during the Cold War reclaimed cinema as an ecology in which democratic discourses and practices could flourish.

Screen Stories and Moral Understanding
The stories we tell and show, in whatever medium, play varied roles in human cultures. One such role is to contribute to moral understanding. Moral understanding goes beyond moral knowledge; it is a complex cognitive achievement that may consist of one or more of the following: the ability to understand why, to ask the right questions, categorization, the application of models to specific incidents, or the capacity to make connections between morally charged situations that have a common underlying meaning. While the disciplines of communication, psychology, philosophy, and film and media studies have all made significant scholarly progress on this issue, they make different grounding assumptions and use different terminologies. Screen Stories and Moral Understanding approaches the topic from an interdisciplinary perspective and explores the conditions under which stories we view on screens-movies, streamed series, and television-can lead to moral understanding in viewers. In five sections, this book explores the nature of moral understanding in relation to screen stories, the means by which moving image fictions can transfer knowledge to and cultivate perspectives in viewers, the role of affect in generating moral understanding, the viewer's engagement with characters, and what we do with screen stories after viewing them.
The Performative Representations of Masculinity in Quentin Tarantino’s Cinema
In this book, Justin Russell Greene examines how Quentin Tarantino uses his auteur identity to further cement the masculine tropes of Hollywood - and ultimately, society - through language, visual aesthetics, and performative representations of masculinity in his films and media appearances. Greene posits that the careful crafting of his auteur persona allows Tarantino to project a consistent version of what it means to be a writer-director-artist, and that through his interview and speeches, he reveals the deeper intensions behind the representations his characters present in his films. However, although he is valorized by audiences, media personalities, and peers as an artistic genius, Tarantino traffics in many of the systemic issues embedded within the United States' socio-cultural environment. Greene argues that although Tarantino promotes a political vision in his films and public appearances that illuminates the restrictions of hegemonic masculinity, this is not sufficiently effective at truly disrupting entrenched ideologies about masculinity in U.S. culture due to how Tarantino hides his critical takes within genre stereotypes. Scholars of film studies, gender studies, and popular culture will find this book of particular interest.

Images of Apartheid: Filmmaking on the Fringe in the Old South Africa is an exploration of the low budget, black-action cinema that emerged in South Africa during the 1970s and led to subsequent gangster and race-conflict films that defined an era of prolific genre activity, from Joe Bullet (1973) to American Ninja 4 (1990). Contextualising and documenting the cheap, government-funded 'B-Scheme' films, largely unseen since the fall of the National Party, but also acknowledging the impact of international co-productions such as The Wild Geese (1978) and locally made provocation, including the classic Mapantsula (1988), this study is an exhaustive tour of race-representation and state-subsidised subversion. Also discussing the political turbulence of the era, Images of Apartheid argues that so-called 'ZAxploitation' should be considered within both localised and wider international paracinematic networks of genre adaptation, resulting in the identification of a uniquely South African form of trash and treasure, and schlock and awe.
Japanese Horror Cinema and Deleuze
Using theories of national, transnational and world cinema, and genre theories and psychoanalysis as the basis of its argument, Japanese Horror Cinema and Deleuze argues that these understandings of Japanese horror films can be extended in new ways through the philosophy of Deleuze. In particular, the complexities and nuances of how films like Ju-On: The Grudge (2002), Audition (1999) and Kairo (2001) (and beyond) form dynamic, transformative global networks between industries, directors and audiences can be considered. Furthermore, understandings of how key horror tropes and motifs apply to these films (and others more broadly), such as the idea of the "monstrous-feminine", can be transformed, allowing these models to become more flexible.

This innovative study finds that, through his unique representation of violence, Argentine director Pablo Trapero has established himself as one of the 21st century's distinctly political filmmakers. By examining the broad concept of violence and how it is represented on-screen, Douglas Mulliken identifies and analyzes the ways in which Trapero utilizes violence, particularly Zizek's concept of objective violence, as a means through which to mediate the political Through a focus on several previously under-studied elements of Trapero's films, Mulliken highlights the ways in which the director's work represents present-day concerns about social inequalities and injustice in neoliberal Argentina on-screen. Finally, he examines how Trapero combines aspects of Argentina's long tradition of political film with elements of Nuevo Cine Argentino to create a unique political voice.

Robert Pippin (1948- ) is a major figure in contemporary philosophy, having published influential work on thinkers including Kant, Hegel, and Nietzsche. He is also an original thinker about - and critic of - film who has written books and numerous articles on canonical subjects such as the Western, Film Noir, and Hitchcock's Vertigo. In Robert Pippin and Film, Dominic Lash demonstrates the ways that film has been crucial to Pippin's thought on important philosophical topics such as political psychology, ethics, and self-knowledge. He also explores the implications of Pippin's methodological commitments to clear language and to maintaining close contact with the details of the films in question. In so doing, Lash brings Pippin's work on film to a wider audience and contributes to current debates both within film studies and beyond. In 1991, Jean-Luc Nancy's heart gave out. In one of the first such procedures in France, a stranger's heart was grafted into his body. Circulating Fear: Japanese Horror, Fractured Realities, and New Media explores the changing role of screens, new media objects, and social media in Japanese horror films from the 2010s to present day. Lindsay Nelson places these films and their paratexts in the context of changes in the new media landscape that have occurred since J-horror's peak in the early 2000s; in particular, the rise of social media and the ease of user remediation through platforms like YouTube and Niconico. This book demonstrates how Japanese horror film narratives have shifted their focus from old media--video cassettes, TV, and cell phones--to new media--social media, online video sharing, and smart phones. In these films, media devices and new media objects exist both inside and outside the frame: they are central to the films' narratives, but they are also the means through which the films are consumed and disseminated. Across a multitude of screens, platforms, devices, and perspectives, Nelson argues, contemporary Japanese horror films are circulated as an ever-shifting series of images and fragments, creating a sense of "fractured reality" in the films' narratives and the media landscape that surrounds them.
