Are you diabetic or know someone who is? It's important to know the basics about the diets for people with diabetes. A diabetic diet is a diet which can help regulate blood sugar levels and reduce the risk of developing diabetes complications. There are four main types of dietary treatments: Low-glycemic, calorie-controlled, low-total fat/low-cholesterol, and Mediterranean diets. The first three (Low Glycemic-, Mediterannean-, Calorie Controlled) may be adequate for most type 2 diabetics while strict restriction of only sugars and carbohydrates can be a good addition in some cases (Type 1 diabetics).
A low-glycemic diet is a diet that focuses on restricting the amount of foods which cause a rapid rise in blood sugar levels. This can help manage both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. The glycemic index (GI) measures how quickly a carbohydrate food raises blood glucose levels. Foods with a high GI value (70 or above) raise blood glucose quickly, while foods with low GI values (55 or below) raise it slowly.
