As I sit here in my office working hard to conjure up the words to explain what you are about to read, the word that comes to mind is Journey. This has been a journey. The writing of the book, the telling of the stories, the making of the stories, the back stories, the educational experiences, the lack of experience, the outcomes, the deflating and exhausting perceived failures, the graduations, the life gains...it has all been a part of the Journey. We are not just talking about any journey, we are talking about my journey. The journey I have been on to get to my point of Teacher, Time Out (not the book, but the application of this philosophy in my life).
Let me begin by saying if you are reading this book, you are a teacher. You may not be a teacher by trade or profession but nonetheless YOU are a teacher and I would bet you, now more than ever, you would benefit from a time out. The premise of the book and titled "time out" experience is really about stopping and taking the time needed to be truly reflective about lessons you've learned, lessons you've taught, lesson you are yet to learn and lessons you are yet to teach.
My journey into and throughout education has been a bit divergent. I have never been the type of teacher to take instruction of anything at face value. I am always looking for connections. I also did not begin my life wanting to be a formal teacher. It is only through formally teaching that I arrived at the understanding that formal learning is happening around us, to us and through each of us every minute of every day. We are input sponges. We are also output sockets. Everyone connected to us is learning from us and teaching us simultaneously. The problem: we don't often enough take the time out needed to sit and reflect on, learn from and apply these lessons with intentionality.
My hope for this book is that every formal teacher, parent, grandparent, child, friend and spouse will deeply connect with these stories and these lessons. My hope is that everyone who reads or hears of the content in this book will consider their stories, their own lessons, their own teachers in their lives. My hope is that with those considerations will come a TIME OUT, a place to contemplate what to do with the information you are receiving from the lessons right before your eyes.
