Melissa: I’ve been looking through the reservations, and I see that this flight only has 178
seats in Economy, but we have reservations for 190 passengers. Why have we
done that?
Jean: That’s called overselling. That flight is currently oversold, but we’re pretty sure
some of the people won’t show up. So, we sell more tickets than we have seats for.
Melissa: How do we determine how many seats we oversell on each flight?
Jean: It’s usually done by computer. The program predicts how many of each class will be
no-shows and lets Reservations sell that many seats on each flight.
Melissa: What do we do if all the passengers show up?
Jean: Well, there are a couple options. We can upgrade some of our frequent flyers to
Economy Plus or Business class. And sometimes we have to ask for volunteers to
take a later flight. We offer them some compensation when we do that, though.
Melissa: So, they can take a later flight. But what if all those are full, too?
Jean: We don’t oversell every flight. Usually the ones later in the day aren’t as full as
early ones. But sometimes we have to bump people from the later flights to make
space for the people who were bumped earlier. We always catch up sooner or later.
