第一章
亞瑟王帶領狩獵的隊伍往回走，準備穿過森林，回到卡美洛。突然，一陣明亮的強光吸引他的視線。「你們看見了嗎？」他問，讓他的馬兒停下腳步。
「陛下，您看見什麼呢？」蘭斯洛特問。
「河邊有一道光。」蘭斯洛特和高文什麼也沒看見，不過他們還是跟隨亞瑟目光的方向。
「往這邊，」亞瑟下令，就在他下了馬，走向一條樹木間的小徑時。
蘭斯洛特和高文小聲吩咐侍從留下來陪伴馬匹，跟在亞瑟背後，往下走到河岸邊，他們在那裡發現驚人的景象。他們面前出現一片石板，石板看起來是順著河水往下流到這裡，還有一把劍深深插在石板中央。劍柄上的金色圓頭反射著陽光，因此吸引國王的視線。「這就跟從前一樣呢，」亞瑟喃喃 自語，靠近這把劍。
蘭斯洛特和高文望著彼此，他們聽說過亞瑟小時候把劍從石頭中拔出來的故事。
「你們看，劍上有刻字耶！」亞瑟興奮的朝背後大喊。「許多騎士都會嘗試，然而只有最棒的騎士才能讓我重獲自由。」亞瑟高聲念出劍上的刻字。

Chapter One
 King Arthur led the hunting party back through the forest to Camelot. Suddenly, a flash of bright light caught his eye. ‘Did you see that?’ he asked, drawing his horse to a stop.
‘See what, Your Majesty?’ Lancelot asked.
‘There was a flash of light by the river.’ Lancelot and Gawain hadn’t seen anything, but they followed Arthur’s gaze.
‘This way,’ Arthur announced, as he dismounted1 and walked to a path through the trees.
 Quietly telling their squires2 to stay behind with the horses, Lancelot and Gawain followed Arthur down to the riverbank3. There they found an extraordinary sight.
 Ahead of them was a slab4 of stone that appeared to have travelled down the river. There was a sword deeply embedded5 in it. The sword’s golden pommel6 reflected the sun’s rays and must have been what had caught the king’s eye.
‘It is just like before,’ Arthur murmured, approaching the weapon. Lancelot and Gawain glanced at each other. They had heard the story of how Arthur had drawn the sword from the stone when he had been just a boy.
‘Look, there’s an inscription7!’ Arthur called back excitedly. ‘‘Many knights will try, but only the best will draw me free’,’ Arthur read aloud.
