If one of my granddaughters asked me how I happened to marry her grandfather, I would admit, a bit sheepishly, “I did a naughty thing. His girlfriend snubbed me, and I gave him a sweet smile out of spite.”
“Then what happened?”
“He talked about grasshoppers.”
Two small, mundane moments that irrevocably changed our lives. They were turning points, one precipitating the other, pivotal only in retrospect.
What actually happened is, of course, a great deal more complicated than that, and it is a story within a story.
Freud said that six people are found in every marriage bed—husband, wife, and their respective parents. In mine, my father and my mother-in-law took up so much space that there was hardly any room for the rest of us.
Writing this memoir in my old age, I have come to appreciate the full import of Freud’s statement, and its connection with a secret so assiduously hidden from me for thirty long years.
All of us were once small and vulnerable, at the mercy of the circumstances into which we were born—our parents, the time period of our births, and social mores of that era. We are fullygrown when we come to our marriage beds, but with disparate vulnerabilities already ingrained in us.
This is a book I have tried all my life not to write.
Like a child burned by hot coals, I was afraid to go near the fire.
