Bone Skin Flesh is the landmark work of Taiwanese poet Yen Ai-Lin. First published in 1997, it drew wide attention for its candid exploration of femininity and its groundbreaking series of erotic poems, making Yen the first female poet in Taiwan to publish such a body of work. Her poetry delves into gender and desire, leaving a lasting impact on readers and contemporary literary discourse.
Divided into six sections, the collection brims with visceral textures—bodies entangled with the world, desire and emotion interwoven with wakefulness and dreams. Rather than passing lightly, the poems take root “in you, on you, and out of you.”

The bottom of the darkness is me waiting
to tempt you down.
I’ll stroke the air into autumn forest’s crisp breath, ready to set alight
our smoldering flesh.
Come draw from my depths!
Even if your exhaustion runs deeper, all is washed away in my dark
hot springs.

I feel hungry and thirsty.
I drop in all my money, and it gives me nothing.
I’d best give it my hands and feet
and hand over my head
but it’s still not enough.
I continue to let it swallow my limbs, but even then it won’t give me a thing.
Finally, I take my soul and drop it in. It spits out a skeleton
and mechanically blinks
“Sorry no change”

Gene for Getting Lost
A naïve mother, with eyes shut tight conceives her first child,
a riddle.
The embryo swims in amniotic fluid, restlessly suckling
mother’s thin, grief laden blood.
In a dark alley, the mother
pursues the truth of that night.
But “truth,”
chewed between a neighbor’s teeth, becomes a gossip’s
mouthful of spit.
如果生活很累
道德很輕，
那麼，
卸下一切
投入黑暗中吧!
