An engineering discipline, which is concerned with the study and application of electricity, electronics and electromagnetism, is called electrical engineering. Various fields that fall under the domain of electrical engineering include computer engineering, electronics, control systems, signal processing, digital computers, etc. An important sub-field of electrical engineering is power engineering. It is concerned with the generation, distribution and transmission of electricity, along with the design of a range of related devices. These include electric motors, electric generators, transformers and power electronics. The field of telecommunication focuses on the transmission of information across a communication channel such as free space, coax cable and optical fiber. The information has to be encoded in a carrier signal to transfer it to a carrier frequency that is suitable for transmission. The use of nanotechnology in electrical engineering has resulted in the production of nanoelectronics. It covers a diverse set of devices and materials such as one-dimensional nanotubes or nanowires and advanced molecular electronics. The various sub-fields of electrical engineering along with the technological progress that has future implications are glanced at in this book. It will serve as a valuable source of reference for graduate and postgraduate students.
