內容簡介
Names set down, duty remembered. A concise register of duty. This contemporary roll records the Members of the University of Glasgow and the University Contingent of the Officers Training Corps who served with the Forces of the Crown between 1914 and 1919. As a first world war reference rooted in early 20th century Britain, it belongs at the intersection of world war i military history and scottish university history. Plain in presentation but strong in purpose, the volume functions as a roll of honour collection and a source of military service records, and it is useful as a genealogy research resource for anyone tracing university of glasgow alumni. Casual readers drawn to human-scale accounts of service find it accessible; classic-literature collectors prize its period authenticity and the measured reserve that marks academic military heritage. Its historical significance rests in the contemporaneous record of campus men and officers, a primary document for great war remembrance that complements regimental and national archives. For family historians and local scholars the names here open paths to service papers and local memory, while for students of the British armed forces and for scholars of the British Officers Training Corps the book offers a focused example of how university life and military duty overlapped during the conflict. Compiled close to the events it records, the register preserves a sober, contemporaneous voice rather than editorial flourish; that restraint is its strength, letting names and dates speak across a century. Useful as a starting point for deeper archival work, it reconnects families to military records and local remembrance projects and rewards patient cross-referencing. Collectors of university publications and of british armed forces anthologies appreciate the book as both a research tool and a cultural artefact. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike.
