Los Amigos Que Perdi/ the Friends I’ve Lost

Manuel es un hombre solo. Vive en una casa confortable y espaciosa en una isla vecina a Miami. Est獺 de pie, ensimismado, mirando una piscina a la que caen lagartijas que 矇l rescata. Espera a que suene el tel矇fono. Pero el tel矇fono no suena y no sonar獺. Porque Manuel ha perdido a esos amigos que quisiera que le llamen. Los ha perdido porque fue torpe y ego穩sta con ellos, porque se inspir籀 en ellos para escribir unas novelas que le hicieron famoso pero lo condenaron a la soledad, al silencio y a la indiferencia de esos amigos que ahora echa de menos.

Para no enloquecer, Manuel les escribe a esos amigos a los que ha perdido pero que todav穩a viven en su memoria, en su coraz籀n, en su imaginaci籀n. Les escribe unas cartas cargadas de nostalgias y ternura, no exentas de matices de humor, en las que intentar獺 recordar los altibajos de esas amistades que dejaron sello imborrable en sus afectos.

Poco importan ya mis explicaciones. Nada de lo que diga te convencer獺 de que no quise da簽arte, de que nunca quise burlarme de ti o someterte al escarnio de los chismosos. No me esperaba esa respuesta. Me doli籀. ENGLISH DESCRIPTION Manuel is a single man. He lives in a big house in one of Miami's neighboring islands. He stands there, absorbed in his thoughts, watching as lizards fall in a pool and hoping for the phone to ring; but it won't ring. Manuel has lost those friends whom he wishes would call. He lost them because of his selfishness, because they were his inspiration for the novels that made him famous and at the same time, condemned him to the indifference and the silence of those he now misses. This is a collection of letters to the friends he betrayed by divulging their innermost secrets, dreams and sexual orientations. These are the letters Manuel writes to those friends he regains only in his imagination: Melanie, with whom he had more than a friendship; Daniel, who thought him to dance and visit brothels; Sebasti獺n, the handsome actor with whom he maintained a secret affair; his friend Manuel, who also dreamt of being a writer; and Dr. Guerra, an aristocrat who thought him the love for books, journalism and strolls through the Parque del Retiro in Madrid.
