Effect of personality nurturing and coaching on the performance of national Indian sportspersons in individual sports at international level

Introduction In today's competitive games, the difference between a winner and loser at the elite level is thin and progressively smaller. Athletes and coaches are becoming aware of the fact that in today's world, competition is fierce, even though athletes are physically fit, yet the margin for victory is slim. At the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008, the difference between first and fourth places in the men's rowing events averaged 1.34%, with the equivalent for women being a mere 1.03% and difference between Federer losing in semifinal 2018 Wimbledon team was one point and similarly winning a major championship in golf is just one putt. A sport is an activity performed by physical capabilities and not necessarily to compete with others. However, competition at any level as is bound by place, time and perfection in sports performance. Competition needs to be assessed according to the dictionary definition ―a situation in that someone is trying to succeed or be more successful than someone else‖. Martens, R., & Gill, D. L. (1976) explicitly states, "Competitiveness is defined as a disposition to strive for satisfaction when making comparisons with some standard of excellence in the presence of evaluative others in the sport,‖ Competition involves of both physical and mental sides that include control of the technical skill along with controlling your own emotions and situations better than others. Competition at International level is a competition between the elite of various countries to establish supremacy in a particular sport. International competition requires the peak of technical skills and control of emotions at the highest level. Thus success at international level is a direct reflection of the state of affairs of the development of technical skills and mental skills from grass root level to the international level in the present. Every nation by default mechanism will have a national champion in every sport; however, the quality of national champion can be assessed only by measuring the performance at international level.
