The Incan fortress of Machu Picchu in Peru is famous for its beautiful architecture and beautiful settings. In Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, there is a huge statue of Jesus called Christ the Redeemer. It stands for both Christianity and Brazilian culture. People think that the tombs of the old pharaohs in Giza, Egypt, are works of engineering miracles. With its shape like a sail, Australia's Sydney Opera House is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a culture icon. Angkor Wat is a temple complex in Cambodia that dates back to the 12th century and is famous for its detailed bas-reliefs and open layout. Petra, an old city carved into the rock in Jordan, is famous for both its beautiful desert scenery and its archaeological importance. Mount Fuji is the tallest mountain in Japan. It is also a cultural icon and an active volcano. In Athens, the Acropolis is home to Greek artifacts like the Parthenon. People all over the world know Big Ben, the Great Bell and clock tower in London, England. The Louvre in Paris, France, is the best art museum in the world. It used to be a royal castle and now holds famous paintings like the Venus de Milo and the Mona Lisa. These places show amazing architecture, cultural past, and resourcefulness on the part of people. Each one gets millions of tourists every year because it shows the history and culture of its area. As an important part of the world's cultural heritage, each place reminds us of the hopes and achievements of people in the past. 1. Paris's Eiffel Tower. It is one of the most famous buildings in the world. The Eiffel Tower was built in 1889 for the Paris World's Fair, which celebrated the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution. Before the Chrysler Building in New York was finished in 1930, this 324-meter-tall skyscraper by engineer Gustave Eiffel was the world's biggest building made by people. The public is free to go to the cafes on the first two and third floors of the wrought iron tower, as well as the observation deck on the third floor. It is now known all over the world as a sign of how clever and creative the French are. 2. The second Great Wall of China More than 13,000 miles long, the Great Wall of China runs through northern China. It is made of stone, brick, tamped dirt, and other barriers. Building began during several dynasties, with the most famous parts being made as a defense against invaders during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Beginning in the seventh century BC, work on the wall began. The UNESCO World Heritage site Great Wall shows how strong and determined China is. The huge size and historical importance of it make it a wonder of ancient military building. 3. New York's Statue of Liberty. On October 28, 1886, France gave the Statue of Liberty to the United States as a gift. Gustave Eiffel made Liberty Island in New York Harbor, and Fr矇d矇ric Auguste Bartholdi, a French sculptor, planned it. The statue honors the 100th anniversary of the American Declaration of Independence and stands for freedom and democracy. The statue is 93 meters tall from the base to the torch and is made of copper and iron. It meets millions of immigrants who come by sea every year. The famous picture represents the American Dream and the spirit of hope.
