What is fear? What is fun? Can the answers to these questions be the same? If you really want the tools to explore these questions and have a badass time doing it, to fight the shadows of history that push the world towards evil, then I recommend using the 666-ish page long book that you are currently holding. No, seriously, this book contains about 666 pages of text... and that was NOT intentional! The Harrowed Earth is a total re-write of the 3.0 and 3.5 d20 rules systems as described in the "System Reference Documents" originally published by Wizards of the Coast, and to which is allowed perpetual access for third-parties to utilize in their own work like this one, thanks to the "Open Gaming License". What we have done it take the material they provided, went back to base concepts for it, then rewrote it all with a different product ethos. One focused on allowing total freedom in character creation and progression, in a horror-themed fantasy version of our world and its history. So what can you do with this book? Well you can play an alien Precursor in an Elven skin-suit, that is hiding from its soul-eating mechanical cousins, in ancient Rome. What about playing a dragon-blooded Halfling in renaissance Japan? Or just go full bore and play the physical incarnation of an Egyptian god, fighting NAZI necromancers? If all of that is just too weird for you, then a Human Gunslinger in the Wild West is perfectly viable as well! Thanks to the revolutionary Era-based system contained in The Harrowed Earth, you can play anything you can think of in any period of history from 5,000BCE to 1950CE! There is even a section describing how to use these rules in OTHER settings published elsewhere (like our future products), or new ones invented by you! Hell, you can even play a balanced "Isekai"-style character, bringing guns to a primitive settings, without breaking the game's balance. So make a decision, then make the character to fit it. Do you want to be a hero forgotten to the ages, yet the reason that darkness has not consumed the world, or give in to the forces of unfathomable evil in exchange for power...and being consumed last. This has taken EIGHT YEARS of solid dedication to finish this book. We hope you have at least as much fun playing the result, as we have had making it!
