Day 12 - The Victim Game

Scripture: 8That all of you have conspired against me, and there is none that sheweth me that my son hath made a league with the son of Jesse, and there is none of you that is sorry for me, or sheweth unto me that my son hath stirred up my servant against me, to lie in wait, as at this day? 1 Samuel 22:8

We live in an era where being a victim means you're a hero. Everyone has a story, and we are all competing to see who can tell the worst one yet, for it means more likes and more views for us on social media. The downside to this is that it makes those who are true victims of terrible circumstances get drowned out in the noise.

King Saul was a man who loved to play the victim game as well. After being rejected by God for His disobedience, he constantly wanted everyone around him to pity him. In the verse mentioned above, he told his servants that they had all conspired against him, simply because they hadn't told him David was in town. Young David had been anointed king in his stead, and Saul was intent on killing him before that could ever happen. He expected all of Israel to be on board with this wicked thing, no questions asked. But even his own heir, Jonathan, protected David from him. The real victim in the story was David, who was forced out of his own home and country by a selfish king, and was on the run for his life.

Only self-serving, narcissistic people blame others for the things they did. In this period of reset, let us be sure to not play the blame game whenever we are in the wrong. It's a trait of our sin nature to put the blame on someone else, but if we only place our hearts before God, He will change us and make us new from the inside out. The truth is, even narcissists can be saved!

A prayer: Lord Jesus, touch my heart, cleanse me and save me from my sin nature. Help me to not play the victim card when I'm in the wrong, but seek forgiveness instead, in Jesus' name, Amen.
