This is known as anticipatory grief: the shock and angst of watching it "coming around the corner." We naturally start grieving as we watch our beloved's impending loss. We can't escape loss, nor the grief that follows. Yet, we live in a world where grief is not well understood, navigated, valued, supported, or healed-especially related to pet loss. Hence, many people don't know how to deal with their grief, nor that of others.
