One’s-self I sing, a simple, separate Person,
Yet utter the word Democratic, the word En-Masse.
Of Physiology from top to toe I sing,
Not physiognomy alone nor brain alone is worthy for the muse–I say the Form complete is worthier far;
The Female equally with the male I sing.
Of Life immense in passion, pulse, and power,
Cheerful, for freest action form’d, under the laws divine,
The Modern Man I sing.

One who should serve the good old cause, the great idea, the progress and freedom of the race,
Some brave confronter of despots, some daring rebel,
But I see that what I was reserving belongs to you just as much as to any.

每個商人高唱自我的頌歌，如同料想一樣快活與強壯，
木匠哼著屬於自己的歌，測量木板或橫梁，
石匠唱著屬於他的歌曲，準備上工或下工，
船夫一一歌唱出船隻物品，汽船水手站在甲板哼唱，
鞋匠坐在板凳上高歌，帽商佇立歡唱，
在早晨路上，下午休息，黃昏時分，伐木工之歌，耕童之歌，響起翩翩旋律，
母親的清甜歌喉，年輕嬌妻忙碌時的歌聲，紡織與洗衣女工的嗓音──人人皆唱出專屬她的歌曲，
白日唱出專屬白日的，夜晚群聚的年輕小伙子，
神采奕奕、和善地張大嘴，唱出他們堅定卻悅耳的歌聲。

I Hear America singing, the varied carols I hear,
Those of mechanics, each one singing his, as it should be, blithe and strong,
The carpenter singing his, as he measures his plank or beam,
The mason singing his, as he makes ready for work, or leaves off work,
The boatman singing what belongs to him in his boat, the deckhand singing on the steamboat deck,
The shoemaker singing as he sits on his bench, the hatter singing as he stands,
The wood-cutter’s song, the ploughboy’s, on his way in the morning, or at the noon intermission, or at sundown,
The delicious singing of the mother, or of the young wife at work, or of the girl sewing or washing–Each singing what belongs to her, and to none else,
The day what belongs to the day, At night, the party of young fellows, robust, friendly,
Singing, with open mouths, their strong melodious songs.
