The year was 1923, and Alice, a Native Nuwuvi (Paiute) teenager in California, dreamed about learning from teachers, making new friends, and being respected for who she was. So when the school board refused to let her and six other Native students attend, she decided to speak up, and she sued for her right to an equal education. Alice Piper Speaks Up, the first book dedicated to this major champion of civil rights, features new research into Alice's life and court case. Each chapter begins with lyrical verse and full-color illustrations that invite readers into Alice's story. Paired with the poems are visually engaging sections filled with keyword definitions, historical context, timelines, primary sources, and questions that help readers relate Alice's experience to their own lives. The text connects Alice's case to larger themes about education, Native rights, and movements for school desegregation across the United States. The third book in Heyday's widely acclaimed Fighting for Justice series, Alice Piper Speaks Up shows how one teen's action resonates throughout America's history, even now.

One Ugly American
I'm going to tell you about how I became a chemically dependent person throughout my life. I'm also going to tell you about how I was using girls and the way I was using them to make money and how I disrespected them and their bodies. I had put girls on street corners as prostitutes. I also took them from state to state, getting money.I'm going to tell you how I worked a lot of meaningful jobs and made good money at it. I'm going to talk about my point of view, about how Black people shouldn't be in the military for the United States. I don't consider myself an African American. I'm a Black American. For those of you that don't know, there is a difference. I want to talk about how I went to prison in Minnesota and how they also railroaded me and how I got locked up for things I didn't do. And the part that hurt me the most is that these people of the justice system knew I didn't do it, but they didn't really give a damn because of the color of my skin. The most important thing is, this book is not about Black and White. It's more about right and wrong. I'm telling you my point of view as a Black person and how I see things and my feelings that are involved. I also want you to know as readers that this looks like it's about a Black-and-White thing. It's not. I want you to know it's more about right and wrong. The things I tell you about are true in the best way I remember them. I am sixty-four years old, and I have no reason to lie. At this time, I don't have any shame in my game at this age. Yes, it's things I'm shameful for, but I got to chalk it up as that was part of my life at that time.

What Is the Book of Judges?
The book of Judges is one of the Bible's wildest rides. But how do you teach it to your kids?Sandwiched between Joshua's victories and Samuel's kingmaking, Judges is the book many families skip-too violent, too confusing, too filled with flawed heroes who seem more like antiheroes. Samson tears lions apart. Ehud assassinates a king. Jephthah makes a vow that ends in tragedy. And the final chapters are so dark they make you wonder if you're still reading the Bible. But this brutal, bewildering book turns out to be essential. It's the story of what happens when everyone does what's right in their own eyes. It's a mirror that shows us our desperate need for rescue. And it's the setup for everything that comes next-the kings, the prophets, and ultimately the true King who would save his people not just from their enemies, but from themselves. What Is the Book of Judges? makes this challenging book accessible for today's young readers. Written in a warm, conversational style that doesn't sanitize the hard parts or talk down to kids, this guide walks through all twenty-one chapters of Judges with: Engaging illustrations from pop culture-from The Lion King to How to Train Your Dragon to Hercules-that connect biblical themes to stories kids already know and loveHonest engagement with difficult content-handling violence, moral complexity, and flawed heroes in age-appropriate ways that spark real conversationsReal-life application-helping kids see how the cycles of Judges speak to their own struggles with compromise, peer pressure, and the temptation to be their own authorityWhether your child is wrestling with why God uses imperfect people, learning to recognize the slow drift of compromise, or ready to explore one of the Bible's most neglected books, What Is the Book of Judges? will show them that even in the darkest times, God never stops working to rescue his people.Perfect for family reading, church classes, or independent study.
Extraordinary Stories
Extraordinary Stories explores the idea that within every person is a chapter worthy of a published book. It aims to teach children from 13-17 years of age that everyone they encounter has experiences and wisdom from which to learn and to prove that they don't have to be famous to have lived a successful and fulfilling life.Children often look to professional athletes, influencers and reality TV stars for inspiration on how to lead a more interesting and 'successful' life. While these people are often able to provide a unique and publicly consumable view, Extraordinary Stories explores and celebrates the fact that the postal worker, your local grocery store employee, your neighbour, doctor, teacher and even parents, have stories to tell, advice, experiences and wisdom to share.Extraordinary Stories is perfectly suited to the TikTok and YouTube savvy generations who scroll quickly though content and are easily bored. To attract the teen readers in this fast-paced digital age, this book is a series of short stories based on real people whose names, places and some details are excluded for privacy reasons unless otherwise requested by the interviewee. Artslaw lawyers have been engaged to provide the correct legal documentation for interviewee release forms and ICIP storyteller and artwork licensing agreements for the Indigenous chapters.Extraordinary Stories is written in a format unlike other books on the market for the young reader. It touches on a range of serious topics but discusses them in age-appropriate language for the target audience. These stories vary from shocking, heartwarming and inspiring and will take the reader to different times and places and expose them to many alternative perspectives and hopefully by the end of the book the reader will start to understand that every person in their life could have experienced hardships, overcome loss, achieved greatness and have words they live by that might change the reader's perspective on life. Extraordinary Stories explores the idea of "if only I knew then what I know now," to give wisdom to the youth who may be navigating similar experiences. It aims to highlight the need to ask meaningful questions from those in your community, to encourage conversation and to develop greater kindness and empathy to those around you.Extraordinary Stories is made up of 17 short stories, one per chapter, named after the person interviewed or their pseudonym chosen for anonymity. Each story is fascinatingly unique although similar themes are found across the book. This shows that even though the reader may not relate to the exact situation an interviewee found themselves in, there are still circumstances we all go through as part of the human experience. An example of this may be bullying which was experienced by many interviewees despite their different life situations, locations, socio-economic background, cultural heritage, family structure etc. From two amazing Indigenous storytellers of the Wailwan community whose insights into their cultural heritage have served as a vital link to the identity of the Aboriginal people to a CrossFit para-champion, a lawyer, a Muay Thai fighter, an Olympian and a fashion designer, this book is filled with short stories that introduce everyday people, their extraordinary lives and what we can learn from them.
