Violet Newborn (b. May 27, 1979, Inglewood, CA) is a Memphis-based visual artist, activist, and founder of Color Your Story Onto Mine (CYSOM). Artist Statement - Violet Newborn
I am an abolitionist of despair.
My work lives at the intersection of trauma and transcendence, where beauty becomes a weapon against cruelty and compassion becomes a revolutionary act. I create from the place where my own darkness was not bypassed, but transformed - where the inner executioner became the inner midwife, delivering me back to myself.
The Newborn Method emerged from this transformation. It is not a technique. It is a testimony.
It is truth + compassion + accountability + creative expression + spiritual grounding -
a pathway that goes straight to the inner child in any human being.
My art is a confession, a mirror, a contract of forgiveness, a rope of light thrown backward for others to climb. Through expressive arts, I dismantle inner prisons long before I ever speak about abolishing the ones built from concrete and steel. My work stands between brokenness and possibility, trauma and recovery, punishment and redemption.
I use colors, texture, and visual storytelling as acts of spiritual midwifery - helping people birth the parts of themselves that were silenced by violence, shame, or survival.
I am a social fine art activist, a survivor alchemist, and a spiritual medium of compassion - not the psychic kind, but the kind who walks into the darkest places of the human soul without becoming darkness. Instead, I ignite healing.
Through my art, I reclaim what was stolen.
Through my workshops, I restore what was forgotten.
Through my presence, I liberate what was imprisoned.
My life is not just a story of surviving.
It is a prophecy of what becomes possible when pain is transformed into purpose.
Everything I create - every brushstroke, every workshop, every journal, every conversation - is a liberation ritual.
A quiet revolution.
A movement of mercy.
My art does not predict change.
It causes it.
