Businesses attract consumers by inbound, not outbound marketing- and their best marketers focus more on creating engaging content that would appeal to consumers. In this day and age, people should realize your content is valuable on their own, so they get to the content themselves (not the other way around). With everything so widely available and at such a low-level of differentiation, products need to have an edge that allows them to stand out from the crowd.
