At that time, there were less than fifty engineers in the United States. By 1865, there were just 12 graduates in the U.S. in the field of mechanical engineering. By 1875, there were only nineteen engineers in the U.S. who were practicing this profession. Then, in 1850, Thomas Savery invented the first steam engine. The development of this engine paved the way for the Industrial Revolution.
