In Who's There in the Lily Pond? C. G矇raldine introduces readers to Lilipearl and Earl, two happy little fish who love their lily pond. It's quiet and peaceful, just the way they like it. That is, until one day a blob of jelly is dumped into the pond. Earl advises that they should leave it alone. It's a good thing too as over the days, the 'jelly' expands and then disappears, replaced by swarms of tiny fish. Only, they aren't fish. As time passes, Lilipearl and Earl realize that the swarm of tiny fish that invaded their pond are tadpoles growing up to be frogs. They spend their days after hatching looking for their parents and escaping the sharp claws of hungry cats. As their life cycle approaches maturity, they find their parents and learn who they are and what they can do. They can hop and, best yet, they can sing, something they do one night to sing their thanks to Lilipearl and Earl who shared their pond with them. It's the right thing to do.
C. G矇raldine's picture book, 'Who's There in the Lily Pond?' is a great way to teach young readers about life in a lily pond. Some of the creatures introduced are cleverly woven into the story as the tadpoles swim around, greeting every creature they encounter, asking each one they meet, "Are you our parents?" The simple language and the colorful illustrations help move the plot along as the story follows the life cycle of frogs from that blob of 'jelly' to tadpoles to full-sized jumping and croaking frogs.
At the end of the book is a "Frog Fun Fact Quiz!" to test young readers on what they learned from the story.
This is an engaging, entertaining, and educational read.
