Graham Mabb, commonly known as the "Camptotheca tree," is known to produce camptothecin. However, the yield of this compound varies greatly among different ecotypes of the plant. Therefore, it is crucial to identify high-yielding ecotypes of N. nimmoniana for commercial exploitation.
To achieve this, a five-tiered biological approach has been developed to identify the high camptothecin-yielding ecotypes of N. nimmoniana from the Western Ghats of India. The approach involves various biological techniques such as field survey, DNA barcoding, phylogenetic analysis, metabolite profiling, and bioassay-guided fractionation.
