Yoga asks the essential questions of humanity: who am I? why am I alive? what is going on here? who are these other beings around me? These questions and the desire to resolve them are inherent to the human condition, and for thousands of years seekers and teachers have grappled with them. Sri Aurobindo, a 20th century yogi, was able to distill the essence of thousands of years of yogic exploration. The book offers a cosmological framework rooted in the yoga traditions that includes an evolving universe gradually awakening to itself, in which a human life is a vehicle of self realization. This evolving universe is animated by energies of creation and truth that fuel the evolutionary process and energies of falsehood and death that inhibit it. The human ego, which formed to cope with the experience of isolation and individuation, can align itself with energies of light and truth or energies of darkness and illusion. The practices and path of yoga developed to provide practical support for alignment with light and movement toward a state of embodied realization of the ultimate truth.
