Situation 1 International Student Office 國際學生辦公室
DIALOGUE 1
Student: Hi. I was wondering if I could ask you a question about my I-94.
Clerk: Sure. What seems to be the problem?
Student: For the expiration date, it says, “D/S.” I’m not sure what that means.
Clerk: It stands for “duration of status,” which means it’s valid until you complete your studies.
Student: Oh, I see. Thanks. That’s really helpful.
Clerk: My pleasure. We also advise international students on tax, legal and housing issues. Feel free to drop by any time.
學生：嗨，我在想我能不能問你關於I-94的問題。
職員：當然可以，有什麼問題？
學生：截止日期上寫著「D/S」，我不知道那是什麼意思。
職員：那是「身分有效期」的意思，這表示有效期一直到你完成學業為止。
學生：原來如此，謝謝，真的幫了我大忙。
職員：我的榮幸。我們也會協助國際學生瞭解稅務、法律和住宿問題，儘管隨時來詢問。
Situation 2 Academic Adviser 選課指導員
Student: I haven’t decided on a major yet, so I’m having trouble deciding what classes to take.
Advisor: Have you thought about possible directions yet?
Student: I’m thinking about either psychology or criminology, but I’m not sure. Can you recommend any general courses to take?
Advisor: Sure. Lower division courses like Psych 1, Socio 1 and Stat 5 will help prepare you for either major.
學生：我還沒決定主修，所以不知道該怎麼選課。
指導員：你有考慮過哪些可能的方向嗎？
學生：我在考慮心理學或犯罪學，但我不確定。你能建議我修哪些通識課程嗎？
指導員：當然，心理學1、社會學1和統計學5之類的入門課都適合當這兩個主修的先修課。
Situation 3 The counseling center 諮詢處
DIALOGUE 1
Student: I’m having trouble adapting to life here. I feel lonely and isolated.
Counselor: It sounds like you’re experiencing culture shock. It takes time to get used to a new environment.
Student: Yes. I also miss my life in Taiwan, and it’s hard for me to communicate in English.
Counselor: I’m sure your English will improve quickly. In the meantime, surrounding yourself with familiar things can improve your mood. There’s a Taiwanese restaurant near campus, and a Taiwanese student association you can join.
學生：我不太能適應這裡的生活，我感到寂寞孤獨。
輔導員：看來你正經歷文化衝擊。適應新環境是需要時間的。
學生：對，我也想念台灣的生活，而且用英語溝通對我來說很難。
輔導員：我相信你的英語會進步很快。在這段時間接觸熟悉的事物能改善你的心情。校園附近有台灣菜餐館，你也可以加入台灣學生會。
DIALOGUE 2
Student: I’ve been working hard to improve my English, but writing papers is still really difficult for me.
Counselor: You should take advantage of our writing tutorial services then. They’re completely free.
Student: That sounds like just what I need. How do I sign up?
Counselor: You just make an appointment online and show up at the Tutorial Center at the scheduled time.
學生：我一直努力提升英語，但寫報告對我來說還是很難。
輔導員：那你可以利用我們的寫作輔導服務，這完全是免費的。
學生：看來這就是我需要的，我要怎麼報名？
輔導員：你只要在網上預約，然後按排程時間到輔導中心報到就好。

國際學生辦公室可以說是國際學生很好的一個窗口，他們不僅可以幫你辦I-20跟簽你暫時離開美國所需文件，他們還可以針對你需要的幫助，引導你去對的地方找對的人。另外，國際學生辦公室還有提供協助國際學生找房子、找工作/OPT質詢、醫療保險、轉學、如何保持有效學生身分等眾多服務。如果你學習上有困難，例如需要額外的幫助或考試需要多點時間，國際學生辦公室人員也可幫你跟教授溝通商討。
