The Screwball Asses and Other Texts
A foundational work of queer theory. First published anonymously in the notorious "Three Billion Perverts" issue of F矇lix Guattari's journal Recherches--banned by French authorities upon its release in 1973--The Screwball Asses was erroneously attributed to Guy Hocquenghem when it was first published in English in 2009. This second edition of that translation, with a new preface by Hocquenghem biographer Antoine Idier that clarifies the different theoretical positions within France's Front Homosexuel d'Action R矇volutionaire, returns the text to its true author: writer, journalist, and activist Christian Maurel. In this dramatic treatise on erotic desire, Maurel takes on the militant delusions and internal contradictions of the gay-liberation movement. He vivisects not only the stifled mores of bourgeois capitalism, but also the phallocratic concessions of so-called homophiles and, ultimately, the very act of speaking desire. Rejecting any "pure theory" of homosexuality that would figure its "otherness" as revolutionary, Maurel contends that the ruling classes have invented homosexuality as a sexual ghetto, splitting and mutilating desire in the process. It is only when nondesire and the desire of desire are enacted simultaneously through speech and body that homosexuality can finally be sublimated under the true act of "making love." There are thousands of sexes on earth, according to Maurel, but only one sexual desire. The Screwball Asses is a revelatory disquisition.

Ghosting
Abandonment is as old as time, but ghosting is a modern twist on this ancient experience. It translates this age-old phenomenon into our modern world of screens, delete buttons and blocking options. Ghosting is not only an unpleasant experience, or cowardly act, but a symptom of our increasingly spectral - that is, mediated and virtual - relationship to the world. The overabundance of new modes of communication has invited an almost infinite number of contacts and conversations. At the same time, it has also offered an unprecedented opportunity for ignoring messages from others. And just as we invented the car crash when we invented automobiles, we also encouraged ghosting when we created the internet.Ghosting creates an empty space in our minds: a space faithfully tracing the silhouette of the one who ghosted us. But unlike traditional ghosts, today's ghosters simply disappear, leaving behind a form of haunting that is closer to mourning: mourning for someone who is not in fact dead. In putting a kind of preemptive mourning into our everyday affairs, ghosting tells us much about the current human relationship - or non-relationship - to a shared sense of mortality, purpose, and spirit. This book - the first sustained analysis of ghosting - traces the source of this vexed experience to, and through, our current media ecology, technological networks, political landscape, collective psychology, romantic mantras, and deep sense of social neglect.

Unreconstructed
Carin Peller-Semmens's Unreconstructed grapples with the longstanding, systemic effects of white supremacist brutality in northwest Louisiana, highlighting the constancy of racial subjugation in one of the most violent areas of the South. Tracing the commitment of the region's white slaveholders to racial violence from antebellum enslavement through to Reconstruction, Peller-Semmens unearths the durable ideology of mastery in the Red River region. She demonstrates that white supremacy and vigilante violence were slaveholding recloaked, and became effective, calibrated tools of political, social, and economic control during Reconstruction. White supremacist violence--demonstrative, controlling, and visceral--attempted to redress mastery and subjugate and subdue newly emancipated Black individuals, imposing parameters on freedom. Unreconstructed shows that white violence and racial control were foundational elements of the regional ideology and identity that Reconstruction galvanized. This ideology of mastery transcended class, creating a shared ethos steeped in racist behavior that remained crucial to postwar conceptions of white selfhood. Barbarity, harnessed boldly and overtly, formed the apex of a diversified campaign of persistent violence that chipped away at freedpeople's experience of freedom and resulted in several seismic incidents of racial violence, including the massacres at Shady Grove, Colfax, and Coushatta. Peller-Semmens's arguments concerning racial power structures speak to race issues prevalent in America today, contributing significantly to a vibrant discourse on the inheritances of slavery and Reconstruction. Indeed, the implications of Reconstruction violence in this region still reverberate nationwide, making this corner of the South integral to the larger narrative of southern racism, white supremacy, and segregation.
