Innovation Capacity and the City

Ingram 出版
2020/10/14 出版

This open access book represents one of the key milestones of DESIGNSCAPES, an H2020 CSA (Coordination and Support Action) research project funded by the European Commission under the Call "User-driven innovation: value creation through design-enabled innovation". The book demonstrates that adopting design allows us to embed innovation within the city so as to arrive at feasible answers to complex global challenges. In this way, innovation can become disruptive, while also sparking a dynamic of gradual change in the "urbanscape" it acts within. To explore this potential, the book puts forward the concept of "design enabled innovation in urban environments" and examines the part that the city can play in promoting and facilitating the adoption of design among public and private sector innovators. This leads to a potential evaluation framework in which a given urbanscape is assessed both in terms of its capacity for generating innovation, and of the nature (more or less design-dependent or design-prone) of the innovative initiatives it hosts. This thread of reasoning holds many promising implications, including a possible "third way" between those who dream of an alternative economic model where revenues and growth are sacrificed on the altar of social and environmental respect, and the supporters of the traditional market-based view, who feel it is enough to add a touch of responsibility and concern to a system that should continue rewarding the profitability of innovations. This book presents an incisive outline of the historical development and geography of cities. It focuses on three themes that constitute essential foundations for any understanding of urban form and function. These are: (a) the shifting patterns of urbanization through historical time, (b) the role of cities as centers of production and work in a globalizing world, and (c) the diverse housing and shelter needs of urban populations. The book also explores a number of critical urban problems and the political challenges that they pose. Empirical evidence from urban situations on all five continents is brought into play throughout the discussion. Framing in Sustainability Science

Shogo,Kudo  著
Ingram 出版
2020/10/14 出版

This open access book offers both conceptual and empirical descriptions of how to "frame" sustainability challenges. It defines "framing" in the context of sustainability science as the process of identifying subjects, setting boundaries, and defining problems. The chapters are grouped into two sections: a conceptual section and a case section. The conceptual section introduces readers to theories and concepts that can be used to achieve multiple understandings of sustainability; in turn, the case section highlights different ways of comprehending sustainability for researchers, practitioners, and other stakeholders. The book offers diverse illustrations of what sustainability concepts entail, both conceptually and empirically, and will help readers become aware of the implicit framings in sustainability-related discourses. In the extant literature, sustainability challenges such as climate change, sustainable development, and rapid urbanization have largely been treated as "pre-set," fixed topics, while possible solutions have been discussed intensively. In contrast, this book examines the framings applied to the sustainability challenges themselves, and illustrates the road that led us to the current sustainability discourse. Planning for Ecosystem Services in Cities

Ingram 出版
2020/10/14 出版

This open access book presents current knowledge about ecosystem services (ES) in urban planning, and discusses various urban ES topics such as spatial distribution of urban ecosystems, population distribution, and physical infrastructure properties. The book addresses all these issues by: i) investigating to what extent ecosystem services are currently included in urban plans, and discussing what is still needed to improve planning practice; ii) illustrating how to develop ecosystem services indicators and information that can be used by urban planners to enhance plan design; iii) demonstrating the application of ES assessments to support urban planning processes through case studies; and iv) reflecting on criteria for addressing equity in urban planning through ecosystem service assessments, by exploring issues associated with the supply of, the access to and demand for ES by citizens. Through fully worked out case studies, from policy questions, to baseline analysis and indicators, and from option comparison to proposed solutions, the book offers readers detailed and accessible coverage of outstanding issues and proposed solutions to better integrate ES in city planning. The overall purpose of the book is to provide a compact reference that can be used by researchers as a key resource offering an updated perspective and overview on the field, as well as by practitioners and planners/decision makers as a source of inspiration for their activity. Additionally, the book will be a suitable resource for both undergraduate and post-graduate courses in planning and geography. Paris Climate Agreement

Ingram 出版
2020/10/14 出版

This volume presents an Empirical Model of Global Climate developed by the authors and uses that model to show that global warming will likely remain below 2簞C, relative to preindustrial, throughout this century provided: a) both the unconditional and conditional Paris INDC commitments are followed; b) the emission reductions needed to achieve the Paris INDCs are carried forward to 2060 and beyond. The first section of the book provides a short overview of Earth's climate system, describing and contrasting climatic changes throughout the planet's history and anthropogenic changes post-Industrial Revolution. The second section describes the climate model developed by the authors (Canty et al., Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics, 2013) and contrasts the model with climate models used in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 2013 Report. Chapter 3 examines both the unconditional (i.e., firm commitments) and conditional Paris INDCs (commitments contingent on financial flow and/or technology transfer) through the lens of their climate model and concludes that if all of the Paris INDCs are followed, then they are indeed a beacon of hope for Earth's climate. The fourth part of the book offers a perspective of energy needs and subsequent emissions reductions required to meet the Paris temperature goals, illuminating challenges faced both in the developing world and the developed world.Throughout the book, easy-to-understand charts and graphics illustrate concepts. The scientific basis of Chapters 2 and 3 was first presented in a keynote session of the 96th Annual Meeting of the American Meteorological Society in January, 2016. Test Positive

Ingram 出版
2020/10/14 出版

Test Positive: Surviving COVID-19 in the Reign of Trump is the true account of how the author survived COVID-19 after testing positive in March 2020. The manuscript also analyzes the historical and the political contexts within which this pandemic has raged in our country. The book provides a step by step account of the actions the author took to overcome the debilitating symptoms of the disease. Test Positive is an extensively documented indictment of the Trump Administration's failure to control the pandemic keep Americans safe. The author pulls no punches when proving that the death of nearly two hundred thousand Americans could have been avoided if President Trump had viewed the pandemic as a health problem, not as a political problem that he could solve by offering his facile and convenient spin that the pandemic would simply disappear.

Satellite Earth Observations and Their Impact on Society and Policy

Ingram 出版
2020/10/14 出版

The result of a workshop bringing together an international advisory board of experts in science, satellite technologies, industry innovations, and public policy, this book addresses the current and future roles of satellite Earth observations in solving large-scale environmental problems. The book showcases the results of engaging distinct communities to enhance our ability to identify emerging problems and to administer international regimes created to solve them. It also reviews the work of the Policy and Earth Observation Innovation Cycle (PEOIC) project, an effort aimed at assessing the impact of satellite observations on environmental policy and to propose a mission going forward that would launch an "innovation cycle". The achievements of such a mission would feed back to innovations in next-generation observation technology, thus contributing to global policy demand for policy-relevant information. Urban Planning Against Poverty

Ingram 出版
2020/10/14 出版

This open access book revisits the theoretical foundations of urban planning and the application of these concepts and methods in the context of Southern countries by examining several case studies from different regions of the world. For instance, the case of Koudougou, a medium-sized city in one of the poorest countries in the world, Burkina Faso, with a population of 115.000 inhabitants, allows us to understand concretely which and how these deficiencies are translated in an African urban context. In contrast, the case of Nueve de Julio, intermediate city of 50.000 dwellers in the pampa Argentina, addresses the new forms of spatial fragmentation and social exclusion linked with agro export and crisis of the international markets. Case studies are also included for cities in Asia and Latin America. Differences and similarities between cases allow us to foresee alternative models of urban planning better adapted to tackle poverty and find efficient ways for more inclusive cities in developing and emerging countries, interacting several dimensions linked with high rates of urbanization: territorial fragmentation; environmental contamination; social disparities and exclusion, informal economy and habitat, urban governance and democracy. Renewing Local Planning to Face Climate Change in the Tropics

Ingram 出版
2020/10/14 出版

This book aims to inspire decision makers and practitioners to change their approach to climate planning in the tropics through the application of modern technologies for characterizing local climate and tracking vulnerability and risk, and using decision-making tools. Drawing on 16 case studies conducted mainly in the Caribbean, Central America, Western and Eastern Africa, and South East Asia it is shown how successful integration of traditional and modern knowledge can enhance disaster risk reduction and adaptation to climate change in the tropics. The case studies encompass both rural and urban settings and cover different scales: rural communities, cities, and regions. In addition, the book looks to the future of planning by addressing topics of major importance, including residual risk integration in local development plans, damage insurance and the potential role of climate vulnerability reduction credits. In many regions of the tropics, climate planning is growing but has still very low quality. This book identifies the weaknesses and proposes effective solutions. In With Flynn, The Boss Behind the President

Ingram 出版
2020/10/13 出版

"Flynn gave the Bronx a reputation for political independence, intelligence and integrity. It was 'the goo borough', even 'a capital of civilized thought.'"-Allen Nevins (1890-1971), biographer who won two Pulitzer Prizes and pioneered the establishment of the oral history movement. Malcolm MacKay's new political biography of Edward J. Flynn is a lively and extremely relevant study of politics in New York State from the 1920's through the 1940's, which illuminates the critical interplay of statesmanship and politics in New York State, and throughout the New Deal in Washington. Mr. MacKay's book underlines the importance that the governatorial administration of Al Smith played as an intellectual and political precursor of the New Deal, and highlights the critical importance of Ed Flynn as both a politician and statesman, as well as vital link between Democratic Party politics and the accomplishment of New Deal policy initiatives. In this time of political drift and anomie, it is a vital reminder of this continuing relationship between politics and statecraft. Portrayal of key players such as Al Smith, Wendell Wilkie, James Farley and Fiarello Laguardia are colorfully and finely etched. Required reading for the 2020 election.

President Trump's Pro-Christian Accomplishments

2020/10/13 出版

IS TRUMP CHRISTIAN? IS HE GOD'S CHOICE? WILL HE RETURN? HOW ARE HIS ACTIONS AFFECTING CHRISTIANS AND BIBLE PROPHECY?This is more than a list of Donald Trump's untold words and actions. This book compares the most significant events of Trump's life and presidency with Scripture and prophecy. Review the evidence. Judge for yourself."Blown away" was the reaction of the Founder of the Return."This...is evidence God has not forsaken America," says the niece of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. "President Trump's Pro-Christian Accomplishments" presents evidence the mainstream media does not want you to see. Donald Trump is not the man they claim him to be. Based on his four-year track record, he may be the most pro-Christian, pro-Church, and pro-Israel President we have ever seen.2020 has been a year of pandemic and great trial, but this book will encourage you. God is setting America up for victory. He wants His people live in optimism and rejoice. As Proverbs 29:2 says, "When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice.""I was blown away by Steve Cioccolanti's new book and have never seen such a wonderfully-crafted, biblically-based prospective on godly leadership. This is so balanced that after reading it for yourself, I'm sure that you would agree with me that God has chosen His leader for the White House. I am equally sure that President Trump would be thoroughly encouraged by reading it for himself."--Kevin Jessip President of Global Strategic AllianceFounder and co-chair of TheReturn.org"This book, a comprehensive view of President Trump's accomplishments, is evidence that God has not forsaken America."- Alveda Celeste King Director of Civil Rights for The UnbornNiece of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr."As usual, Steve Cioccolanti's insights are Biblically powerful, pragmatic and prophetically eye-opening. A must-read."- Allan ParkerPresident of The Justice Foundation"Reading this tribute to President Trump's pro-Christian accomplishments brought me to actual tears...tears of joy! I realized in a greater way how much he deeply cares about our country and our people, even though he has been relentlessly and grossly maligned by the press. The facts in this book are not only essential to know for such a time as this, but will also make a great reference book for the annals of our time."- Colette Stringfield-RhodesPresident of God's Truth Ministries. Inc."Steve Cioccolanti's amazingly insightful and Spirit-filled new book feels as if the Lord was with him, whispering in his ear as he answered important questions gracefully and justly. Using the light of scriptures, he shines on the biggest achievements of the Trump years. It is tricky for believers sometimes to see how God is working and moving. Fortunately we have the Bible and thought-provoking pastors such as Pastor Cioccolanti to provide the wisdom and discernment we need to separate the light from the darkness-the facts from fiction."- Andy SteffenChristian business owner

Solve Your Own Damn Problems

Ben,Shapiro  著
Broadside 出版
2020/10/12 出版

New York Times BestsellerHow far are Americans willing to go to force each other to fall in line?According to the establishment media, the intelligentsia, and our political chattering class, the greatest threat to American freedom lies in right-wing authoritarianism. We've heard that some 75 million Americans who voted for Donald Trump represent the rise of American fascism; that conservatives have allowed authoritarianism to bloom in their midst, creating a grave danger for the republic. But what if the true authoritarian threat to America doesn't come from the political right, but from the supposedly anti-fascist left? There are certainly totalitarians on the political right. But statistically, they represent a fringe movement with little institutional clout. The authoritarian left, meanwhile, is ascendant in nearly every area of American life. A small number of leftists--college-educated, coastal, and uncompromising--have not just taken over the Democratic Party but our corporations, our universities, our scientific establishment, our cultural institutions. And they have used their newfound power to silence their opposition. The authoritarian Left is aggressively insistent that everyone must conform to its values, demanding submission and conformity. The dogmatic Left is obsessed with putting people in categories and changing human nature. Everyone who opposes it must be destroyed.Ben Shapiro looks at everything from pop culture to the Frankfurt school, social media to the Founding Fathers, to explain the origins of our turn to tyranny, and why so many seem blind to it.More than a catalog of bad actors and intemperate acts, The Authoritarian Moment lays bare the intolerance and rigidity creeping into all American ideology - and prescribes the solution to ending the authoritarianism that threatens our future.

The Twenty-Eighth Amendment?

Ingram 出版
2020/10/08 出版

The Electoral College was adopted by the framers of our Constitution as a method of ensuring that our presidents would be well-qualified statesmen. But this goal has been thwarted by changes in our "unwritten constitution," resulting in a deeply flawed electoral process that is far removed from Constitutional provisions. Reformers frequently seek to abolish the Electoral College and replace it with a process that gives the presidency to the candidate winning the most popular votes, but that alternative provides poor inoculation from charismatic charlatans. Paul Schumaker, a retired professor of political science, employs the techniques of memoir to convey the evolution of his thinking about this issue, to warn us against adopting such pretenders as the "Interstate Compact," and to prescribe a national process that weds concerns for more acceptable candidates with our common democratic values. Covering the past, the present, and the future, this book concisely informs the public about a current issue of enduring importance for American politics.

The Great Hysteria and The Broken State

Ingram 出版
2020/10/08 出版

This pandemic is not a once in 100 year event but closer to a once in 30 year event. The hysteria is grossly overdone. There were WHO guidelines in 2019 about flu-type pandemics and none involved lockdowns. Australian governments including Victoria's had clear plans for all kinds of pandemics. None involved 5-km lockdowns, 23-hour curfews and mandatory masks even in the open air. These lockdowns are causing huge collateral damage while the governments remain in denial. The governments must lift the lockdowns and focus on the at-risk population. We also need constitutional and legal reforms to ensure that this doesn't occur again.

SOE and NKVD in Afghanistan

Lulu.com 出版
2020/10/07 出版

As a result of a secret agreement between Joseph Stalin, General Secretary of the Russian Communist Party and Premier of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republic (USSR), and Winston Churchill, the British Prime Minister, signed in Moscow in September 1941, the intelligence agencies of both countries agreed to work together. To be more specific, officers of Norodny Kommissariat Vnutrennich Dyel (NKVD), the Soviet People's Commissariat for Internal Affairs, liaised with officers in the Special Operations Executive (SOE), a newly formed clandestine warfare organisation which was separate from the established Secret Intelligence Service (SIS), usually known as MI5 and MI6 The Soviet Union sent a mission to London and Britain sent a mission to Moscow. For four years until September 1945, NKVD and SOE officers liaised over military, political and economic matters, not just in Western Europe but also in the Middle East and Far East. This book, a documentary history written with an admittedly British filter, focusses on SOE and NKVD activity in Afghanistan, a landlocked mountainous country between the Soviet Union and India, the crown jewel of the British Empire. It also includes the story of Bhagat Ram, a Hindu communist who worked as a Soviet agent, taking false intelligence reports to officials in the Italian, German and Japanese embassies in Kabul in exchange for large sums of money, wireless sets and explosives. The NKVD shared Ram's services with the SOE so that he became the only quintuple agent of the Second World War. Primary sources include correspondence in SOE files found in the National Archives in Kew, London, from not just SOE and NKVD officers but also officials in the War Office, the Foreign Office, MI6, British Embassies in Iran, Cairo and New Delhi, the Indian Political Intelligence, the British Raj, the Delhi Intelligence Bureau and Allied Military Headquarters in the Middle East. It also uses extracts from autobiographies and biographies, history books, articles from academic journals and contemporary newspapers and snippets from websites. Bernard O'Connor provides a day-to-day account of the changing Anglo-Soviet relations during the war, international diplomacy, political rivalries, misunderstanding, incompetence, intrigue, lies and deception.

Overlooking Oswald

Lulu.com 出版
2020/10/07 出版

As the U.S. Senate's Church Committee probed alleged assassination attempts against foreign leaders, it raised questions regarding possible connections between these plots and the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Questions were later raised about whether agencies adequately investigated these possible connections and whether information about these plots was provided to the Warren Commission. As a result, the Select Committee reviewed the performance of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) with respect to their investigations of the assassination of the President. This book exposes through documentary evidence and interviews that both the CIA and the FBI failed in, or avoided carrying out, certain of their responsibilities, both before and after the JFK assassination. It reveals the leads never followed up on by the CIA in terms of foreign connections to Cuba, other potential shooters at Dealey Plaza, and the minimal attention paid to the activities of Lee Harvey Oswald before the assassination, which led an Assistant Director of the FBI to worry that the general public would believe "we are responsible for negligence which might have resulted in the assassination of the President."

We Love Trump!

Ingram 出版
2020/10/07 出版

"Millions of Americans." declared Dallas megachurch pastor Robert Jeffries in 2017, "believe the election of President Trump represented God giving us another chance-perhaps our last chance-to truly make America great again. Our job was to elect him once God showed us the way. We thank Our Lord to this day that we did. We love Trump!Donald Trump got elected because a higher power whispered in the individual ears of millions of Americans. The voice said that together in this election, we could all make a difference, and Donald Trump would become that difference. The people trusted this self-made Billionaire to do what was best for America and not the bidding of slimy politicians or political donors and hacks. Donald Trump was the only candidate for president who offered Americans a breath of fresh air from the stodgy, bossy, establishment elites in both the Democratic and Republican Parties. In 2020, we need Trump again to defeat the Socialist Democrats and their hate. Our weapon again is Trump. Trump love will win the day. Trump once defied the status quo of rich donors controlling the government for their personal benefit. Donald Trump to many, including myself is a great gift from God himself. Donald J. Trump loves America and American traditional values. Just look at the goodness that he instilled into his own children. The corrupt anti-American mainstream press still does not like Trump because he represents normal God-loving and God-fearing Americans and not the fringe sectors of the country. They hate him. He calls them out as the fakes they are. They hate him because he is not controlled by anyone - Dem Party or wimpy swamp-dwelling Republicans. Neither gave Trump an inch and they undermine America by undermining our president. Donald Trump does pay attention to God and Americans are glad that he does. God is guiding our president to a second victory to help him lead America from 2021 through 2024.We know that the President already turned the economy around once and he is in the process of doing it again-this time while afflicted by the Coronavirus.Trump will overcome all of the country's issues included COVID-19, oppressive taxation; legal and illegal immigrants stealing the best jobs; regulations choking businesses; huge debt and deficits shackling our capital resources; a government Obamacare system that added taxes and made health worse; and corporate offshoring, which created a weaker nation. Joe Biden is ready to continue this because he supported Barack H. Obama's policies which had created the whole mess in the first place. Additionally, Trump freed our energy supply making us the world's largest energy producer. When Obama was in charge he redistributed wealth from producers to non-producers. He permit a huge, growing, inefficient government to operate. It continually lied, taxed too much and spent more than it had. Our government had become enemy # 1 of the people Mr. Biden wants to bring back those bad times calling them the good old days. A good plan, endorsed by Mr. Trump, along with good leaders such as Donald Trump & Mike Pence is now in place and the plan and the leaders are already saving US from Obama perdition. That's "Why God Gave US Trump!" Now it is up to use to thank god by giving Trump his second term. Amen!

My Generation Was A Social Experimentation- On Race Fakers And Cultural Appropriation

Ingram 出版
2020/10/06 出版

"My Generation Was A Social Experimentation" is the last social and political essay by French-Belgian author VKY (Victoria Kabeya). Are White people from the Western sphere on the verge of collapse? Is White Supremacy coming to an end in the 21st century? The recent cases regarding professors and race fakers Rachel Dolezal and Jessica A. Krug could give us an answer. Why would two academics lie about their heritage? Why would they build false identities all the while ignoring the feelings of the communities they have been lying to? In reality, though Rachel and Jessica are the true symbol of White privilege and Black-face, the issue is actually bigger than it seems. White people have been surpassed by their own demons and are helpless. After centuries of worldwide domination and massive involvement in industrialization, they find themselves helpless and without a sense of self. They no longer have any culture for they spent the last 70 years developping new technologies so as to maintain their dominant position in the world. Then, there comes the "other". The foreigner, immigrant, Black or "person of color" embodies the importation of postcolonialism within the White man's sphere. Though exploited and despised, he still possesses the authenticity of his self, as he somehow succeeded in protecting his own culture. Desperate and jealous, the dominant White entity can now rely on the brutal foundations of the capitalistic society to become the living representation of a minority he envies.

Environmental Sustainability

Gamze,Tanil  著
Ingram 出版
2020/10/05 出版

Reflecting the concerns over environmental sustainability, there has been an increasing focus on the protection of our water resources and on the proper management of our waste. Our economic growth can only be sustainable when it does not represent a threat to human health and to fauna, flora, and eco-system in the long-term. A long-term resilience, new business and economic opportunities, and environmental sustainability can be achieved through circular economy model that offers us a world of opportunity to rethink and redesign our economic activities and consumption patterns. With an aim to give the reader a new perspective on this issue, this book covers European Union's water and waste management legislation and the Czech Republic's transposition of this legislation, and includes a comparative analysis of the performances of the EU Member States on the implementation of new water and waste management policy strategies.

Environmental Philosophy, Politics, and Policy

John A,Duerk  著
Ingram 出版
2020/10/05 出版

As an issue, the environment is complicated. First, it is layered. Secondly, it is multifaceted. As a result, political scientist John A. Duerk has assembled an interdisciplinary anthology composed of accessible studies to generate conversations that will yield greater understanding of the many environmental challenges that we face. The layers explored herein are philosophy, politics, and policy. Philosophy concerns the ideas that inform our values. Politics involves the conflicts that emerge amid the conditions we must navigate. Lastly, policy encompasses how public and private actors respond to everything from regulation of greenhouse gas emissions to changes in consumer attitudes. Regarding the different facets, this work is intended to be an entry point for anyone who would like to learn more about issues such as the land ethic, the environmental impact of clothing production, climate change, the placement of bike lanes in cities, water usage, and artist depictions of the wilderness. Let the conversations begin...

Bringing Human Rights Back

Ingram 出版
2020/10/05 出版

Bringing Human Rights Back: Embracing Human Rights as a Mechanism for Addressing Gaps in United States Law examines well-documented policy failures in the United States and makes an argument for how a human rights approach to these issues can lead to meaningful change. Specifically, the authors articulate a human rights approach to online harassment of women, child poverty, and access to safe drinking water. These issue areas all involve human rights concerns and gross shortcomings within current law, policy, and practice in the United States. The authors analyze recent events, such as Gamergate, contention over social programs such as TANF and CHIP, and the water crises in Flint and Detroit to demonstrate the ways in which current laws do not fully respect, protect, and fulfill human rights. A human rights approach decenters assigning blame or liability, and instead emphasizes human dignity, redress, and remedy for the rights violations. Daniel Tagliarina and Corinne Tagliarina not only highlight the need for change in these areas, but outline a practical way forward rooted in human rights scholarship and practice.

Migrant Care Workers

Routledge 出版
2020/10/05 出版

In this beautifully-argued book, Karen Cristensen and Ingrid Guldvik provide a comparatively-based insight to the historical context for public care work and show how migration policies, general welfare and long-term care policies (including the cash-for-care schemes) as well as cultural differences in values in the UK and Norway set the context for how migrant care workers can realise their individual life projects. Through viewing migrants as individuals who actively construct their lives within the options and conditions they are given at any time, they bring to the discussion an awareness of what might be called 'a new type of migrant' one who is neither a victim of the divide between the global north and the global south, nor someone leaving family behind, but individuals using care work as a part of their own life project of potential self-improvement.

Repairing Infrastructures

Mit Press 出版
2020/10/04 出版

An investigation of the causes and consequences of the strange, ambivalent, and increasingly central role of infrastructure repair in modern life.Infrastructures--communication, food, transportation, energy, and information--are all around us, and their enduring function and influence depend on the constant work of repair. In this book, Christopher Henke and Benjamin Sims explore the causes and consequences of the strange, ambivalent, and increasingly central role of infrastructure repair in modern life. Henke and Sims offer examples, from local to global, to investigate not only the role of repair in maintaining infrastructures themselves but also the social and political orders that are created and sustained through them. Repair can encompass not only the kind of work we most commonly associate with the term but also any set of practices aimed at restoring a sense of normalcy or credibility to the places and institutions we inhabit in everyday life. From cases as diverse as the repair of building systems on a university campus, a conflict over retrofitting a bridge while protecting murals painted on it, and the global challenge posed by climate change, Henke and Sims assemble a range of examples to illustrate key conceptual points about the role of repair. They show that repair is an essential if often overlooked aspect of understanding the broader impact and politics of infrastructures. Understanding repair helps us better understand infrastructures and the scope of their influence on our lives.

The Theory of Conspiracy and the Main Actors in Creating the Culture of Violence in Eastern Congo

Ingram 出版
2020/10/04 出版

This book takes a look at who and why a culture of violence in Eastern Congo has been created. It is widely believed and accepted by many Congolese that the international community conspires to dispossess the Congolese of their land due to it's vast natural resources. This book explores the idea that President Museveni of Uganda along with tribal ethnic Tutsi's, have a plan to build a Hima Empire in East and Central Africa where they will detain the aristocratic and dominant social class (Think Hitler ideology adopted by African dictators). It is believed that the international community wants to balkanize the DRC and annex the eastern part to Uganda and Rwanda. The destabilization and occupation of many areas in the eastern region of the DRC since 1996 by Rwanda and Uganda with support from the International community and the United Nations would suggest so. With the help of the international community, Rwanda and Uganda has managed to forcefully and illegally occupy the eastern region of the DRC with no restrictions to the exploitation of the Congolese natural resources. Essentially Neo-mercantilism is being implemented through the above mentioned factors. The creation and maintenance of artificial disorder in the forms of bad governance, failed state, and engineered inter ethnic conflicts have lead to the creation of the culture of violence.

People First

Stan,Burkey  著
Zed Books 出版
2020/10/03 出版

This down-to-earth book is aimed at Third World development staff involved in working with the rural poor and draws on the author's own field experience in Africa and Asia. The book is also relevant to non-field staff and, indeed, students of development generally, who want to understand what participatory development is, how it differs from the more conservative process of simply trying to involve people in already decided development projects, and the practicalities of how a non-government organisation (NGO) can go about its work without taking over and manipulating the local people. People First presents a coherent methodology for achieving development based on principles of conscientisation, local control, co-operation and self-reliance. It emphasises the importance of women participating fully, and of getting the economics of a project right, if it is to be of real benefit to local people and successfully sustained. The author also believed that field experience and theoretical understanding must be integrated so that change agents and development workers can situate their work in an awareness of both the nature of poverty and competing views of the development process. Conscious of the frequent co-option of the idea of participation by official development agencies, and of the other pitfalls that participatory development can run into, the author provides a hard-headed and practical education about the role of change agents; their recruitment training and support; how to get started; working with groups; handling relations with government officials and local power holders; and a full range of other relevant issues.
