Guns and Values
The American gun control debate is best understood as a battle in a war over the influence of individualism on American culture, politics, and policy. This book demonstrates that the gun debate is fundamentally about values. Specifically, it is about what we value most: private rights, or the public good. This helps explain why the technical, empirical, or legalistic arguments we hear aren't persuasive. A review of scholarly literature on both the politics of gun control and American political culture finds an American bias toward an individualism that embraces personal rights. We argue that this bias stacks the deck against gun control. Interviews we conducted with activists show that support for, or opposition to, gun control is linked to concern for the public, or private, good. Finally, we trace the federal gun control debate in Washington from the 1960s to 2010s to show the ebbs and flows of individualism's influence.
Japanese Politicians' Rhetorical and Indirect Speech
This book presents a new approach to the analysis of political psychology, political culture, and communication. Using data from Japanese political interviews and parliamentary deliberations, it reveals how Japanese politicians address their audience. In addition to analyzing the use of verbal political rhetoric, the book shows that nonverbal communication is highly relevant as well. In a context where political leaders are becoming increasingly important, identifying the techniques used by Japanese politicians - especially facial expressions, hand gestures, and other forms of body language - to gain support from the audience, leads us to consider communication practices of political leaders around the world. Politicians adopt different communication styles based on their specific electoral system. The more single-seat constituency political candidates use rhetoric, the greater their chance of appealing to voters. In addition, the use of personal experiencesand others' speech quotations function as effective political rhetoric, further attracting the audience's attention. In short, this book presents a more comprehensive and holistic picture of political "rhetoric" than usually offered by other studies of political communication.

Migration, Food Security and Development
This book examines the role of migration as a livelihood strategy in influencing food access among rural households. Migration forms a key component of livelihoods for an increasing number of rural households in many developing countries. Importantly, there is now a growing consensus among academics and policymakers on the potential positive effects of migration in promoting human development. The Times and Temporalities of International Human Rights Law

Covert Colonialism
This book fills the long-standing void in the existing scholarship by constructing an empirical study of colonial governance and political culture in Hong Kong from 1966 to 1997.Using under-exploited archival and unofficial data in London and Hong Kong, it overcomes the limitations in the existing literature which has been written mainly by political scientists and sociologists, and has been primarily theoretically driven. It addresses a highly contested and timely agenda, one in which colonial historians have made major interventions: the nature of colonial governance and autonomy of the colonial polity. The Evolution of the Common Security and Defence Policy
This book examines the evolution of the EU's Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) from its inception in 1998 to the present day. Using the theoretical framework of historical institutionalism, it examines both the successes and failures of the CSDP. Subverting Resistance to Social Justice and Diversity Education
This compact book is constructed using psychological theory and research to empower university faculty to facilitate student engagement and address student resistance to diversity and social justice education more effectively. University faculty teaching diversity and social justice have traditionally encountered various forms of student resistance. Recent cultural trends of political opposition to teaching critical race theory and other forms of increased polarization and scapegoating with decreased levels of social tolerance have exacerbated challenges in promoting student engagement in diversity and social justice education in universities and colleges. The Plague of Models
Sometimes, reading the news, it seems we are drowning in a sea of risks. Every day, dozens of news articles proclaim some activity, some exposure, some change in the environment exposes us to new and terrifying risks. And every day, governments in developed countries pop out regulations to ensure that we make those changes in behavior to address those supposed risks, whether we want to or not. You probably think such claims, and regulation of risk are backed up by something resembling actual real-world evidence of harm. You probably assume that governments, when regulating, are relying on hard data: physical observations of exposures to a potential harm, physical measurements of harms that result from exposure, and that sort of thing. But if you assume that, you are probably wrong. Since the computer revolution of the 1970s, actual hard evidence of risk have been replaced, both in the estimation of risks, and in the regulation of risks, with computer models simulations of reality - that may have little or no relation to the actual reality in which actual people live. The book is about the influence of computer risk-modeling on public policy, specifically, the giant gushing fountain of EHS regulations that have poured forth since the 1970s. That shift to simulation of risk has led to a massive increase in regulation: a Plague of Regulation that rests on the Plague of Models.

Climate change is a global problem, usually caused by the excessive release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The burning of wood and fossil fuels has conspicuously impacted the carbon cycle negatively, causing a substantial increase in carbon dioxide level. The carbon dioxide level has continued to rise in response to the increased conversion of organic forms during the Industrial Revolution. Ideally, carbon dioxide has increased sharply from 280 ppm to over 400 for the past two centuries. Initially, people brushed off the idea that such an increase in carbon dioxide was due to human activities. The issue of climate change was therefore attributed to nature, and treated as a natural component. The global community has already acknowledged the implications of climate change and has been striving to reduce carbon emissions for the past few decades. Through the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Kyoto Protocol, a target to limit the mean global temperature rise to no more than (or as close to) 2簞C by the year 2100 was established. The objective of this business decision model report is to determine a plausible set of human behavioral and policy changes that would be used to limit the mean global temperature rise to no more than (or as close to) 2簞C by the year 2100 in alignment with the UNFCCC and the Kyoto Protocol directives.
