Peace in the Name of Allah

Ofir,Winter  著
Ingram 出版
2024/06/26 出版

From Anwar al-Sadat's dramatic gambit in 1977 to the surprising declaration of the Abraham Accords in 2020, making peace with Israel was always a tough sell for Arab regimes. Through an analysis of hundreds of fatwas, sermons, essays, books, interviews, poems, postage stamps and other media, Peace in the Name of Allah examines how Egyptian, Jordanian, and Emirati political and religious authorities introduced Islamic justifications for peace with Israel, and how those opposed countered them. The discussion demonstrates the flexible and ambiguous nature of revelation-based political discourses; Islam is neither 'for' nor 'against' peace with Israel - people are, as different Muslim political actors take competing or even contradictory positions.

Germany and China

Bloomsbury 出版
2024/06/25 出版

As Europe finds itself once again caught between two superpowers - the USA and a rising China - little has been written about a relationship that will have a profound influence on the international order: the relationship between the People's Republic of China and Germany. In Germany and China, leading international relations expert Andreas Fulda looks critically at the increasingly interdependent relationship between the two countries. Drawing on examples from politics, industry, development aid and technology sectors and academia, the book explores how successive governments from Helmut Kohl to Angela Merkel have pursued ever-closer ties to China in the interests of short term economic gain. Fulda explores the danger of this increasing entanglement not just for Germany, but for Europe and the international world order.

Key Issues in African Diplomacy

Sven,Botha  著
Ingram 出版
2024/06/25 出版

Africa's unique position as an international diplomatic actor has not always been given the attention it deserves. This volume bridges this gap by offering a fresh, comprehensive and realistic overview of African diplomacy. The book examines African diplomatic practice. Chapters explore how different types of diplomacy have developed over time, including energy diplomacy, economic diplomacy and quiet diplomacy. Crucially, the book assesses how certain events have allowed Africa to use certain types of diplomacy to yield better outcomes for itself. Including contributions from an international team of scholars, policy makers and experts from the diplomatic world, the book provides a comprehensive guide to African diplomacy and challenges the current dominant usage of Northern perspectives on diplomacy studies.

Unit X

Raj M,Shah  著
Ingram 出版
2024/06/25 出版

Shortlisted for the 2024 Financial Times Business Book of the Year A riveting inside look at an elite unit within the Pentagon--the Defense Innovation Unit, also known as Unit X--whose mission is to bring Silicon Valley's cutting-edge technology to America's military: from the two men who launched the unit. A vast and largely unseen transformation of how war is fought as profound as the invention of gunpowder or advent of the nuclear age is occurring. Flying cars that can land like helicopters, artificial intelligence-powered drones that can fly into buildings and map their interiors, microsatellites that can see through clouds and monitor rogue missile sites--all these and more are becoming part of America's DIU-fast-tracked arsenal. Until recently, the Pentagon was known for its uncomfortable relationship with Silicon Valley and for slow-moving processes that acted as a brake on innovation. Unit X was specifically designed as a bridge to Valley technologists that would accelerate bringing state of the art software and hardware to the battle space. Given authority to cut through red tape and function almost as a venture capital firm, Shah, Kirchhoff, and others in the Unit who came after were tasked particularly with meeting immediate military needs with technology from Valley startups rather than from so-called "primes"--behemoth companies like Lockheed, Raytheon, and Boeing. Taking us inside AI labs, drone workshops, and battle command centers--and, also, overseas to Ukraine's frontlines--Shah and Kirchhoff paint a fascinating picture of what it takes to stay dominant in a fast-changing and often precarious geopolitical landscape. In an era when America's chief rival, China, has ordered that all commercial firms within its borders make their research and technology available for military exploitation, strengthening the relationship between Washington and Silicon Valley was always advisable. Today, it is an urgent necessity.

The State of the Nations

Ingram 出版
2024/06/25 出版

The State of the Nations is a collection of essays evaluating the political, social, and economic development of independent African states in the 1960s. The effort to employ the notion of constraint as a conceptual tool in analyzing African politics reflects an attempt to move away from evaluative terms such as development and modernization or decay and breakdown. Development, which has an implicit suggestion of social progress and constitutional government, seems inappropriate for the study of the wide array of political phenomena found in African states. Terms such as breakdown and decay--with an equally broad suggestion of disruption, disunity, and instability--seem equally inappropriate. The vantage point of the authors in this volume is primarily political, but their understanding of African development encompasses the social and economic spheres as well. The constraints that impede achievement of African objectives are varied, and many, of course, are not political. Geographical factors, for example, are supremely relevant in accounting for the availability of natural resources. The principal justification for emphasizing political rather than other constraints is the extent to which political will and political action can stimulate development in spite of other obstacles. Paradigm Lost

Ingram 出版
2024/06/25 出版

The two-state solution is doomed; the one-state reality is here to stay Why have Israelis and Palestinians failed to achieve a two-state solution to the conflict that has cost so much and lasted so long? In Paradigm Lost, Ian S. Lustick brings fifty years as an analyst of the Arab-Israeli dispute to bear on this question and offers a provocative explanation of why continued attempts to divide the land will have no more success than would negotiations to establish a one-state solution. Basing his argument on the decisiveness of unanticipated consequences, Lustick shows how the combination of Zionism's partially successful Iron Wall strategy for dealing with Arabs, an Israeli political culture saturated with what the author calls "Holocaustia," and the Israel lobby's dominant influence on American policy toward the Arab-Israeli conflict scuttled efforts to establish a Palestinian state alongside Israel. Yet, he demonstrates, it has also unintentionally set the stage for new struggles and "better problems" for both Israel and the Palestinians. Drawing on the history of scientific ideas that once seemed certain but were ultimately discarded, Lustick encourages shifting attention from two-state blueprints that provide no map for realistic action to the democratizing competition that arises when different subgroups, forced to be part of the same polity, redefine their interests and form new alliances to pursue them. Paradigm Lost argues that negotiations for a two-state solution between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan River are doomed and counterproductive. Israeli Jews and Palestinian Arabs can enjoy the democracy they deserve but only after decades of struggle amid the unintended but powerful consequences of today's one-state reality.

Until We Have Won Our Liberty

Princeton 出版
2024/06/24 出版

A compelling account of South Africa's post-Apartheid democracy At a time when many democracies are under strain around the world, Until We Have Won Our Liberty shines new light on the signal achievements of one of the contemporary era's most closely watched transitions away from minority rule. South Africa's democratic development has been messy, fiercely contested, and sometimes violent. But as Evan Lieberman argues, it has also offered a voice to the voiceless, unprecedented levels of government accountability, and tangible improvements in quality of life. Lieberman opens with a first-hand account of the hard-fought 2019 national election, and how it played out in Mogale City, a post-Apartheid municipality created from Black African townships and White Afrikaner suburbs. From this launching point, he examines the complexities of South Africa's multiracial society and the unprecedented democratic experiment that began with the election of Nelson Mandela in 1994. While acknowledging the enormous challenges many South Africans continue to face-including unemployment, inequality, and discrimination-Lieberman draws on the country's history and the experience of comparable countries to demonstrate that elected Black-led governments have, without resorting to political extremism, improved the lives of millions. In the context of open and competitive politics, citizens have gained access to housing, basic services, and dignified treatment to a greater extent than during any prior period. Countering much of the conventional wisdom about contemporary South Africa, Until We Have Won Our Liberty offers hope for the enduring impact of democratic ideals.

Development and Regional Stability in Africa

Palgrave M 出版
2024/06/24 出版

This book critically engages with the development-security nexus in contemporary Africa, coinciding with the twentieth anniversary of the African Union (AU). Despite widespread discourse on the 'Africa Rising' narrative, many African states grapple with persistent economic challenges, violent conflicts, Afrophobia, and democratic setbacks. The AU's efforts, alongside those of other regional actors, to leverage regionalism for driving socio-economic and political development while ensuring peace and security have yielded limited results. Consequently, this edited volume takes an incisive approach to unpack the complex and vexed issues obstructing sustainable advancements in security and development in Africa. While existing studies have predominantly centered on conventional conflict and development concerns, this book sheds light on the emerging realities and evolving dynamics shaping the region's trajectory. Utilising a comprehensive case study approach, the book places Africa's challenges within both historical and contemporary contexts, aiming to present sustainable policy options to bridge the myriad gaps in the continent's peace, security, and governance architecture. By addressing the intricacies of balancing individual state interests with collective regional advancement, this volume offers a pathway toward unlocking Africa's potential for development and fostering a prosperous and harmonious 'Africa We Want'.

Cuba, Castro, and the United States

Ingram 出版
2024/06/22 出版

Bonsal combines his memoirs of his experiences in Havana with an analysis of the relationship between Cuba and the United States both during the Batista and Castro regimes and during the earlier history of the Cuban Republic. His discussion of Castro's personality is incisive, portraying the Maximum Leader's increasing animosity toward the United States until the final break-off of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Bonsal's observations of Castro and the sociopolitical climate in Cuba are perhaps the most incisive and accurate of any to date on the subject. All the events from the Revolution to the termination of diplomatic relations are discussed. Of particular interest are Bonsal's accounts of his attempt to find a basis for a rational relationship between the United States and Castro's Revolution, the rejection of that attempt by Castro, and the abandonment by Washington of the policy of nonintervention in Cuban affairs which the Ambassador had advocated. Finally, in an evaluation of future relations between the two countries, Bonsal analyzes some of the major problems of the coming years.

Socio-environmental Development

Ingram 出版
2024/06/21 出版

The main objective of this research was to analyse the possibility of implementing or improving programmes within the municipality under study, the purpose of which is to provide a better quality of environmental and urban life for the citizens of the city of Paulista-PE, as well as whether the municipality and/or agencies, through agreements/partnerships with other public entities and/or non-governmental organisations, have implemented socio-environmental development actions for the areas of the city that are the subject of this study. In the case of Paulista-PE, the aim was to assess whether there have been changes caused by economic and population growth, and whether these factors have effectively contributed to altering the city's socio-environmental scenario, especially in the areas considered most vulnerable, and whether these factors represent real and effective development in the municipality. On the other hand, the aim was to investigate whether there had been any progress in the socio-environmental aspect, taking into account the fact that population growth in the 2000-2010 period was above the local, regional and national averages, causing a real "urban bulge".

Nadezhda Krupskaya and the New View of Radical Society in Russia

M A,Iasilli  著
Ingram 出版
2024/06/20 出版

The Russian Revolution is typically studied from a perspective of power and authority. The shadow of Communism tends to portray the revolutionary character of 1917 as an ominous path toward totalitarianism. While the revolutionary story has been overshadowed by the authoritarianism of Stalinist regimes, the Revolution has much more complex underpinnings that tie back to the nineteenth century Russian populist movement and the women who were drawn into it. Nadezhda Krupskaya and the New View of Radical Society in Russia reexamines the fundamental ideas and moments that led to the revolution and its eventual bureaucratization from the perspective of Nadezhda Krupskaya, Vladimir Lenin's wife. Her involvement provides a new perspective in how we should consider the role of culture as opposed to ideology, particularly the subordination of Communism, as well as the women in Soviet politics. M.A. Iasilli provides a nuanced view of the Russian Revolution that demonstrates a Bolshevik legacy and connection with their populist ancestors, the Narodniks, and argues that the revolution wasn't merely Marxist fanaticism but something much deeper and emotional.

Relations and Roles in China's Internationalism

Chih-Yu,Shih  著
Ingram 出版
2024/06/20 出版

Pluriversalism within International Relations and the literature on Chinese international relations each embrace ideas of relation and difference. While they similarly strive for recognition by Western academics, they do not seriously engage with each other. To the extent that either succeeds in winning recognition, it ironically reproduces Western centrism and the binary of the Western versus the non-Western. In Relations and Roles in China's Internationalism, author Chih-yu Shih demonstrates, through a critical translation exercise, that Confucian themes enable both the critique and realignment of liberal thought, allowing all of us, including the members of Confucianism and the neo-liberal order, to understand how we adapt to and coexist with each another. In the end, Confucianism not only informs the pluriversal necessity that all are bound to be related but also de-nationalizes China's internationalism.

The Authoritarian Divide

University 出版
2024/06/17 出版

In the context of the global decline of democracy, The Authoritarian Divide analyzes the tactics that populist leaders in Turkey, Venezuela, and Ecuador have used to polarize their countries.Political polarization is traditionally viewed as the result of competing left/right ideologies. In The Authoritarian Divide, Or癟un Sel癟uk argues that, regardless of ideology, polarization is driven by dominant populist leaders who deliberately divide constituents by cultivating a dichotomy of inclusion and exclusion. This practice, known as affective leader polarization, stymies compromise and undermines the democratic process.Drawing on multiple qualitative and quantitative methodologies for support, as well as content from propaganda media such as public speeches, Muhtar Meetings, Al籀 Presidente, and Enlace Ciudadano, Sel癟uk details and analyzes the tactics used by three well-known populist leaders to fuel affective leader polarization: Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Turkey, Hugo Ch獺vez in Venezuela, and Rafael Correa in Ecuador. Sel癟uk's work provides a rubric for a better understanding of--and potential defense against--the rise in polarizing populism across the globe.

Keeping the Red Flag Flying

Mark,Garnett  著
Ingram 出版
2024/06/15 出版

Labour leader Harold Wilson was once asked how difficult he found being prime minister of the United Kingdom. 'Not half as difficult as being Leader of the Opposition', he replied. Sadly for the Labour Party, much of the last century has been spent in shadow government. But were these wasted years in the Party's history? Or did they offer vital opportunities for creation and improvement? In Keeping the Red Flag Flying political historians Mark Garnett, Gavin Hyman and Richard Johnson offer the first in-depth account of Labour's periods out of office since becoming the Official Opposition in 1922. They argue that, far from being barren periods in the Party's history, Labour's opposition years from MacDonald to Starmer have been undervalued and misunderstood. Across the book's eight chapters they scrutinise Labour's approach to reforming the party machinery, its development of policy proposals, its success in appealing to the wider electorate and its skill in opposing the government to identify the key hallmarks of successful opposition, as well as common mistakes. As the Labour Party prepares for a long-awaited return to government, this insightful book on Labour's past has vital lessons for the Party's future.

Why Presidents Fail

Ingram 出版
2024/06/14 出版

Democracy and political parties go hand in hand. Strong parties are fundamental for advancing, stabilizing, and improving democratic governance. But how exactly do political parties relate to, and contribute to, the survival of presidential administrations? Since 1979, over twenty Latin American chief executives had been forced out of office, without a democratic breakdown--a phenomenon known as "presidential failure." Why Presidents Fail offers a nuanced assessment of how political parties influence how and when executives weather political crises and unrest. Christopher A. Mart穩nez takes a close look at how different factors come into play to explain why some presidents complete their terms in office without incident, others barely make it to the end after stumbling upon crisis after crisis, and some are forced out or impeached before their term is finished. Drawing on a novel theoretical approach, an original database on presidential scandals and anti-government demonstrations, regression (survival analysis) models, country case studies, and interviews with more than one hundred country specialists and top-level politicians, Why Presidents Fail provides an innovative, comprehensive assessment of how political parties influence presidential survival and contributes fresh ideas to the debates on the stability of presidential governments.

Trajectories of Governance studies the complex dynamics of order-making, violence and governance in peripheral cities in Latin America from a comparative, historical and multi-scalar approach. It aims to discover more about the drivers, contexts and uneven levels of violence through the case studies of Chalatenango and Sonsonate in El Salvador and Pereira and Tunja in Colombia. Based on a multidisciplinary analytical framework, it explains why and how some peripheral cities have become the locus of violent orders, whereas others have managed to control violence, and to examine the role of violence in the workings of local governance.

Biden and Beyond

Ingram 出版
2024/06/13 出版

Biden and Beyond: The United States Rethinks South Asia captures the significant transitions unfolding in the US policy towards South Asia. Developed across two administrations, led by Donald Trump and Joe Biden, the US' South Asia policy has moved away from more than four decades of focus on Afghanistan, especially after the military withdrawal from Afghanistan in August 2021, to now viewing the region through the Indo-Pacific prism. The military withdrawal has also undermined the US' long-standing strategic partnership with Pakistan that was viewed as the frontline state in dealing with the turmoil in Afghanistan. This has substantially altered Washington's geopolitical perspective of the South Asian subcontinent.Furthermore, the rising concerns in Washington on China have seen the formulation of an Indo-Pacific strategy that has elevated India to the top of US strategic priorities. The deepening tensions between China and the US, as well as between Beijing and Delhi, have set the stage for a new strategic partnership between Washington and Delhi. Amidst Washington's competition with Beijing, the Himalayan region girding the underbelly of China has acquired an importance of its own. The maritime perspective of the US has also raised the value of the subcontinent's waters and provided an incentive for Washington to turn new attention to the strategic islands of the Maldives and Sri Lanka.Taken together, these factors presage a transformation in the interaction between the US and the South Asian subcontinent in the coming years. This book, hence, brings into the conversation these recent changes and sheds new light on contemporary US-South Asia relations.

Environmental Governance in India

Ingram 出版
2024/06/13 出版

Our pursuit of material development is largely responsible for the present environmental crises. The environmentalists are demanding recognition of nature's rights to restore the environmental degradation. In the environmental discourse, we find two diverse perspectives namely- homocentric and ecocentric. The homocentric perspective holds that man's interests/rights prevail over the rest of nature. Alternatively, the ecocentric perspective emphasises that man owes a responsibility to nature. However, how to define the rights of nature is a problematic issue and this is the focal point of environmental governance. Nevertheless, it has been strongly argued by political theorists that nature has its rights, and man has a moral responsibility to protect these rights. In this context, the present book explores environmental governance in India with national and international perspectives. It questions our model of development, emphasises the right of nature, and explores environment-friendly ways of development. In the discourse of environmental governance, it critically applies relevant case studies with theoretical analysis.

The Presidential Difference and Iran’s Foreign Policy Under Khatami from 1997 to 2005

Ingram 出版
2024/06/13 出版

The Presidential Difference and Iran's Foreign Policy Under Khatami from 1997 to 2005 explores the paradigm shift, one that involved a change from confrontation to peaceful relations. The main reason for this alteration rests on Muhammad Khatami's belief system, whose discourse of "Dialogue Among Civilizations" aiming at coexistence and cooperation assured the international community that Iran would not pursue revolutionary aspirations, but rather seek constructive and meaningful relations based on equality, mutual respect and understanding. Azadeh Momeni argues that the cornerstone of this sea change in foreign policy rests on Khatam's intellectual thoughts which is characterized by his belief system. What sets this book apart is its unique approach, employing Operational Code Analysis to analyze Khatami's belief system. Operational Code Analysis is a quantitative method used in political psychology and international relations to understand the decision-making processes and beliefs of political leaders.

Developing a Security Training Program

Ingram 出版
2024/06/12 出版

Developing a Security Training Program focuses on how to establish a comprehensive training program for a security department from the ground up. This book highlights formal curriculum development, consistent and continual training, and the organizational benefits including how such security training will be a value-add.It's long overdue for the industry to revisit old security training models from the past -- to both general staff as well as to the dedicated security staff and professionals within organizations -- and examine and revamp such with a fresh perspective. Given the current, dynamic environment for businesses -- and the threats businesses face -- it is important that any such training consider all procedures and policies, and be fully integrated into the company culture. This includes maintaining an eye on budgetary and financial costs while recognizing the need to budget for more training resources to maintain resilience and adaptability to current challenges and future changes to the environment. There is only one way to prepare your staff and that is through comprehensive and consistent training.Developing a Security Training Program provides the blueprint and tools for professionals to provide ongoing, targeted, and comprehensive security training at a low, budget-friendly cost.

Somali Foreign Policy, 1960-1990

Ingram 出版
2024/06/11 出版

"An important segment of Somalia's strategic history, and that of the Horn of Africa region, which clearly deepens a demand for its sequels." - Prof. Makumi Mwagiru.ABOUT THE BOOK: SOMALI FOREIGN POLICY, 1960-1990: An Analysis of Thirty Years of Diplomatic History uses theories of state behaviour to interrogate Somali foreign policy during the years between independence in 1960 and state collapse in 1991 and connects this to the dynamics of the civil war and the conflicts that followed the state collapse. The book is an important contribution to the issue of the Somali state collapse and its cascading impacts on the country, including its foreign policy. It also answers a number of questions on inter-state conflicts in Africa and the ways in which armed conflicts on the continent arise from a combination of internal and external factors. This book provides a detailed examination of the key events, policies, and challenges that shaped Somalia's interactions with the region and the world, using theories of state behaviour to interrogate Somali foreign policy during the years between independence in 1960 and state collapse in 1991. The book begins with an introductory overview, setting the stage for the in-depth analysis that follows. It then delves into the complex relationship between foreign policy and conflict, focusing on Somalia's role in the region and the historical context of conflicts within the country. The core of the book is divided into two main sections, each covering a distinct period in Somali foreign policy. The first section, spanning from 1960 to 1969, examines the early years of independence and the nation's initial efforts to establish its place in the international community. The second section, covering 1969 to 1990, explores the impact of the military coup led by Siad Barre and the subsequent shifts in Somalia's foreign policy priorities. The book then turns to emerging issues in Somali foreign policy, discussing the challenges and opportunities facing the nation in the years following the period under study. The author draws insightful conclusions, synthesising the key themes and lessons learned from the thirty years of diplomatic history, and connects this to the dynamics of the civil war and the conflicts that followed the state collapse.ABOUT THE AUTHOR: PROF. IBRAHIM FARAH, a Somali academic and former lecturer at the University of Nairobi, is the founder and head of the research unit of the Mogadishu-based Justice & Peace Network (aka Maandeeq- JPN), a global Somali political movement. Prof. Farah has some 30 years' experience in academic teaching and research, humanitarian aid and development cooperation as well as in socio-political and security analysis. In Defence of Our Humanity

Stephen,Hill  著
Springer 出版
2024/06/07 出版

This book is based on Stephen Hill's direct experience working in the United Nations for many years as consultant and over a decade as full time Member of Staff-based in Indonesia and part-time in Paris, serving as United Nations Regional Director for Science for Asia and the Pacific as well as Principal Director and Ambassador of the United Nations Agency UNESCO (the UN Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization) across South East Asia. It was not always a quiet life. Stephen had to handle the negotiations and aftermath of two of his own UN staff taken hostage in 1996 for five months by freedom fighters into the jungles of West Papua; the May 1998 Revolution in Indonesia where he had to escape his house at 2.00am through mobs and fires while his own security staff had changed into civilian clothes and run off down the street to escape, then evacuate everyone else, but stay to report to the UN Security Council and liaise with the incoming Transition Government. In the early 2000s, Stephen needed to escape Indonesia, under UN Security instruction, from the terrorist organisation, Abu Sayyaf from Mindanao, the Southern Philippines, when they sent a Hit Squad down through Manado and across Sulawesi towards Jakarta to assassinate him in Jakarta because of his collaborative work throughout Mindanao's previous fundamentalist Islamic conflict zones, amongst other things, bringing literacy to 7,000 villagers, mainly women, building nine radio stations with community support across religious lines, and introducing basic education into Islamic Schools previously teaching only the Koran and Arabic. This book captures all of this rather exciting life but delivers a message from experience-the Power of Community and Cultural Empowerment in successful United Nations Action to bring positive change into the world.

From Schmelt Camp to "Little Auschwitz"

Ingram 出版
2024/06/07 出版

From Schmelt Camp to "Little Auschwitz" Blechhammer's Role in the Holocaust is the first in-depth study of the second largest Auschwitz subcamp, Blechhammer (Blachownia Śląska), and its lesser known yet significant prehistory as a so-called Schmelt camp, a forced labor camp for Jews operating outside the concentration camp system. Drawing on previously untapped archival documents and a wide array of survivor testimonies, the book provides novel findings on Blechhammer's role in the Holocaust in Eastern Upper Silesia, a formerly Polish territory annexed to Nazi Germany in the fall of 1939, where 120,000 Jews lived.Established in the spring of 1942 to construct a synthetic fuel plant, the camp's abhorrent living conditions led to the death of thousands of young Jews conscripted from the ghettos or taken off deportation convoys from Western Europe. Blechhammer was not only used for selecting parts of the Jewish ghetto population for Auschwitz, but also for killing pregnant women and babies. As an Auschwitz satellite, Blechhammer became the scene of brutal executions and massacres of prisoners refusing to go on the Death March. This microhistory unearths the far-reaching complicity of often overlooked perpetrators, such as the industrialists, factory guards, policemen, and "ordinary" civilians in these atrocities, but more importantly, it focuses on the victims, reconstructing the prisoners' daily life and suffering, as well as their survival strategies.

The National Security Constitution in the Twenty-First Century

Ingram 出版
2024/06/07 出版

A deeply researched, fully updated edition of The National Security Constitution that explores the growing imbalance of institutional powers in American foreign affairs and national security policy Since the beginning of the American Republic, a package of norms has evolved in the U.S. Constitution to protect the operation of checks and balances in national security policy. This "National Security Constitution" promotes shared powers and balanced institutional participation in foreign policymaking. Today it is under attack from a competing claim of executive unilateralism generated by recurrent patterns of presidential activism, congressional passivity, and judicial tolerance. This dynamic has pushed presidents of both parties to press the limits of law in foreign affairs. In his award-winning National Security Constitution (1990), Harold Hongju Koh traced the evolution of this constitutional struggle across America's history. This new book, based on the earlier volume but with roughly 70 percent new material, brings the story to the present, placing recent events into constitutional perspective. Reviewing the presidencies of the twenty-first century, he explains why modern national security threats have given presidents of both parties incentives to monopolize foreign policy decision-making, Congress incentives to defer, and the courts reasons to rubber-stamp. Koh suggests both a workable strategy and crucial prescriptions to restore the balance of our constitutional order in addressing modern global crises.

International Relations

Eric,Shiraev  著
Ingram 出版
2024/06/05 出版

Using a consistent three-part framework within each chapter--moving from Ideas, to Arguments, and then Contexts & Application--International Relations, Fourth Edition, shows students how to think critically about issues and current events in world politics. Each chapter first describes key concepts and developments in the field, then presents the main theoretical and analytical approaches, and finally applies the main theories and approaches within the individual, state, and global contexts. The text builds on this effective framework with a variety of features that support students' understanding of key concepts. Historical information is woven throughout the text through "History Lab" features, and every chapter ends with an extended "Case Study" that demonstrates how what we have learned from the past can influence our future actions. "Visual Reviews" at the end of each chapter not only recap key points but include "Critical Thinking" questions that reflect the chapter's learning objectives. A unique Conclusion, "Forecasting the World of 2030," serves as a capstone exercise and includes discussion and writing prompts to help students synthesize what they've learned.

News Framing of Indigenous Politics in Canada

Brian,Budd  著
Palgrave M 出版
2024/06/04 出版

This book explores the news media's coverage of Indigenous-settler reconciliation following the conclusion of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC). Using a comparative case study research design, the book examines news coverage of three significant Indigenous rights issues and events during the post-TRC era. The findings presented demonstrate that in the post-TRC era, the Canadian news media continue to produce systemic patterns in coverage which reject, marginalize and erase the territorial rights and claims of Indigenous Peoples. The author concludes that rather than helping to move the relationship between Indigenous Peoples and settlers forward along a path of reconciliation, power-sharing, and the resurgence of land-based self-determination, the news media are continuing to construct discourses and representations that work against the political objectives of Indigenous Peoples and reinforce settler colonial power relationships in Canada.

American Global Leadership

G Doug,Davis  著
Univ 出版
2024/06/02 出版

In American Global Leadership: Ailing US Diplomacy and Solutions for the Twenty-First Century, G. Doug Davis and Michael O. Slobodchikoff present a selection of fifteen essays that trace the history of American diplomacy from Eisenhower to Trump. Penned by American statesmen--among them, James A. Baker III, General Wesley Clark, Thomas Pickering, and Michael McFaul--these essays illuminate US foreign policy through the Cold War, the Iraq and Afghan wars, the economic crisis of 2008, and the instability that arose during Trump's presidency. Each chapter reflects the wisdom and experiences of its author to illustrate the realities of diplomacy in the United States and the difficulties diplomats, military leaders, and foreign policymakers encounter today. Among other themes, the discussions in this volume explore the relevance of diplomacy in resolving global crises, the use of military policy and force as diplomatic tools, skills diplomats should possess, and current obstacles facing US foreign policy. Through the lens of their professional service as US diplomats, the authors examine American mistakes and successes of the past seventy years to assess how the role of diplomacy within US foreign policy has changed over time and how it must continue to evolve to meet future challenges. One conclusion proves recurrent: the US can no longer afford to rely only on might and force but must rededicate itself to diplomatic strategies to achieve its long-term goals. American Global Leadership is not just a valuable resource for scholars of diplomatic history and political science; it is also an important work for current diplomats and those aspiring to careers in the US Foreign Service.

Near and Far Waters

Colin,Flint  著
Ingram 出版
2024/06/01 出版

Seapower has been a constant in world politics, a tool through which powerful countries have policed the seas for commercial advantage. Political geographer Colin Flint highlights the geography of seapower as a dynamic, continual struggle to gain control of near waters-those parts of the oceans close to a country's shoreline-and far waters-parts of the oceans beyond the horizon and that neighbor the shorelines of other countries. A forceful and clarifying challenge to conventional accounts of geopolitics, Near and Far Waters offers an accessible introduction to the combination of economic and political relations that are the reason behind, and the result of, the development of seapower to control near waters and project force into far waters. Examining the histories of three naval powers (the Netherlands, Britain, and the United States), this book distills the past and present patterns of seapower and their tendency to trigger repercussive conflict and war. Readers will gain an appreciation for how geopolitics works, the importance of seapower in economic competition, the motivations behind China's desire to become a global naval force, and the risks of current and future wars. Drawing on decades of experience, Flint urges readers to take seriously the dilemma of near/far waters as a context for an alternative understanding of global politics.

Australia in World Affairs 2016-2020: Volume 13

Ingram 出版
2024/05/30 出版

Between 2016 and 2020 Australia's foreign and security policies were significantly impacted by profound changes in geopolitics and geoeconomics, particularly as great power competition re-emerged between the United States and China. Australia in World Affairs 2016-2020: A Return to Great-Power Rivalry examines Australia's engagement on the international stage in light of these events. The thirteenth volume in the Australia in World Affairs series builds on the history of Australia's foreign policy covered in other volumes to identify patterns of continuity and change. It catalogues the key developments in this period of world history from an Australian perspective. Organised thematically, chapters cover Australia's foreign policy response to climate change, Australia's strengthened ties to the Indo-Pacific region, and its security interests in Southeast Asia. Australia's increasing security dependence on the US in an age of great-power rivalry is evident throughout.
