How I Raised 4 Successful Black Sons
Many people in my circle from family to friends have observed me as a young father and bore witness to the successes and triumphs in my sons' lives. While these triumphs have not been without their fair share of pitfalls and setbacks, the success has been resounding inside and outside of my circles. In a day and time where young black men are considered "at-risk" in every arena in this country, between the violence and high murder rate of young black men in urban areas, the disproportionately high rate of incarceration for them, as well as the fatherlessness that in turn perpetuates a lengthy cycle of hopelessness and despair from generation to generation, I am proud to be an example for black fatherhood to so many. Even with a blended family, I am proud that despite the pitfalls I have experienced as a father of black men, I can now see the fruits of my labor and can be seen as a positive example of how to manifest success with my own black sons.
So You Think You Want to Foster?
At the age of four, because of the Easter bombings in May 1941, wewere bombed out of our beautiful home and evacuated to a farm thirtymiles north of Belfast, Northern Ireland. A year or so later, we returnedand lived in a very deprived area in the city. My father, an old soldier, was an alcoholic who smoked in the region of a thousand cigarettes aweek, so, the cupboards were bare and family life broke down. Mymother had little or no money for food, or even necessary items. Ibecame something of a problem child and was convicted of theft forstealing food. They put me in the care of an extremely tough children'shome until the age of sixteen. Because of the problems in my earlylife, I never did smoke or drink and at the age of twenty-six, marriedmy wife and we subsequently went into fostering and did it for manyyears along with our six children. We finally retired over forty-fiveyears later. My experiences gave me a lot of insight and I felt that Ihad a story that needed to be told, that's why I wrote my book; 'So youthink you want to Foster.'

There are no paved roads in the village, no cars or buses, no running water or electricity. The village is an independent community and has little connections with the outside world. There are hardships and hard work but also the happiness of festivals and family celebrations. The first-born son is able to receive scholarships, go to the university, and finally, go to England to graduate from Oxford and Leiden in the Netherlands. Even though he grew up in very simple surroundings, the special child worked hard and reached his goals.
