Autism - A Family Journey
It is an engaging and emotional story. At the same time, it is an honest portrayal of what it is like to live with autism on a daily basis. Cindy Rasmussen wrote this story for her children to help them understand what happened in their family when they were growing up, from the perspective of a Mom. Her eldest son, Mark, was only 19 months old when her autistic son, Steven, was born and only 2 1/2 when the first serious problems began. Steven was six years old when Geoffrey was born. So although they were there for most of the journey, they have little memory or understanding of the most difficult years for their family. It is her hope that as adults they can read her account and gain a deeper insight and understanding into things that took place in their childhoods and that this knowledge might help them as they go forward in their own lives.Cindy says: "If you are the parent of an autistic child, I also want to share our story with you so that you know that you are not alone. Christine says, '...as you build your own life skills and concentrate on the journey that life presents, you learn to modify your thinking, adapt your behaviour to meet the outcome you want. Sometimes, it takes longer to reach your goals than you first anticipated but with the strength of mind and determination you can achieve great heights. I didn't have any intention of writing a book about food additives when I started researching the topic. I had observed the behaviours of my own children when they were younger and one who was diagnosed with a lifelong condition, then observed the children I taught in both the UK and Australia; I had also witnessed a young child in the family on a recent visit wanting a particular fruit drink at a similar time each day. After the family went home, I was curious to find out what was put into different drinks that create the bad habit of wanting sugared drinks at daily, regular times? With these questions in my head, I went to the supermarket and bought as much of this so-called food as my arms would carry, and at home, started reading. That was the beginning of the research and the journey into food additives. If I hadn't put in, the nearly four years of work and research for my book, 'Devils In Our Food', I would not have been able to write the Programme, Power Point, and supporting workbooks for the children and young adults on Food Intelligence I have written. Are You My Momma?
As World War II may seem to baby boomers and 9/11 to Gen Z, children born during and after 2020 may view memories of the pandemic, the smoke-choked orange skies over the West Coast, protests in the streets, an endless election, and family get together via FaceTime may see as a bizarre fairytale. This is one attempt to show it was real: virtual doctor visits, nasal swabs, risk assessment for visiting grandparents, etc. Giving birth during this pandemic wasn't idea. It wasn't what I pictured. I held my mantras close, and still do. Now the phrase, "it take a village" has a whole new meaning for me. Although your "village" cannot be present, they are still with you via text and video chat. People still really want to be there for you. You might feel alone, and at times I did, but when you finally give birth to that precious baby, give yourself the credit you deserve. I gave birth during the novel coronavirus outbreak, nothing is impossible. And then it was my son's turn to face the pandemic head on: He was born with a heart issue. So after one month of being home, his health got worse and he had to have surgery done. So besides the normal poke of the IV, they were also shoving a swab down his nose day in and day out to (1) make sure he didn't have COVID and (2) because he contracted a disease from the hospital. So whenever the doctors came to see him, they were not only wearing masks but also infectious disease suits and gloves. Can you imagine? At that moment, I couldn't help but wonder what was going through my son's head. He has only been on this earth for less than a month and he probably really didn't know my face that well. So I wonder what was going through his head as he lay there after surgery unable to move and just take the pokes and prods from the men and women in suits. Which got me the inspiration to write this book... In honor of my son and his experience: You go through the wars to become a warrior - keep standing strong brave little heart.

A happy life needs good thoughts. Random Thoughts on Love is a book of good thoughts. In reality, it is a struggle in my mental illness to think of good thoughts. I had to commit myself to making the choice. To make the choice, it began last year when I heard that the best way to start off my day is to greet the Holy Trinity. I have done that ever since and it led me to writing about thoughts on love. In mental illness, any thoughts of love exist very minimally. But it is possible to change this by choosing to make the change.
