In this eye-opening book based on 30 years of successful work with girls, Dr. Tim Jordan M.D. shines a light on what is really going on with girls as they undergo their normal transformation from girl to woman during adolescence. Using fairy tales and real stories of girls from his practice and camps, Sleeping Beauties will help you become aware of the needs girls have in areas like emotions, friendship struggles, self-quieting, finding their passions, body image, and stress. Developmental Dynamics and Transitions in High School
This book is about young people and their transitions throughout their first year of high school, deepening our understanding of how it is to be young and enter new institutional settings, and how to understand the developmental dynamics of youth life. It explores the everyday life of six young people as they enter high school and follows them closely as they encounter and try to make sense of the different standards, values, and demands that are built into the institutional setting of high school. The chapters explore the entanglements of personal motive orientation, interpersonal dynamics, institutional values and demands, as well as societal standards, and how subtle negotiations of who one is and ought to be are interwoven into the fabrics of everyday life. Hence the book explores variations on an institutional level - as different high school environments - along with variations on an interpersonal level, insisting on a person-environment reciprocity in the study of development. Using cultural-historical activity theory and ecological psychology derived from theorists including Bang, Barker & Wright, Gibson, Lewin, Hedegaard, Ilyenkov, Stetsenko, and Vygotsky, Sofie Pedersen argues that developmental dynamics among young people cannot be reduced to individual nor social processes alone but are connected to institutional conditions and to concrete places. By insisting on a wholeness approach to the understanding of youth development, Pedersen reveals the developmental dynamics that unfold in the everyday lives of young people, and sheds new light on youth life dynamics, including the challenges that young people face.

Negotiating Strategies and Challenges in the Divorce Process
About the Book"Why don't we spend much more of our time studying the art of negotiating? Perhaps a major reason is that divorce is a process, and not much of our legal education is focused on the process. The goal of this book is to explore in detail the scope of knowledge and skills that would be appropriate for professionals who are involved in the negotiation of divorce agreements. This is a book about negotiating! And since all of this negotiating takes place in the context of the divorce process, this is also a book about the divorce process!" - L.D. GaughanNegotiating Strategies and Challenges in the Divorce Process represents the professional legacy of my father, Lawrence D. Gaughan, a monumental pioneer in the field of family law and mediation. Completed months before my father's death and published posthumously, this book serves as an academic textbook, as well as a developmental guide for professionals. I remember around the time my father turned 65, I asked him when he planned to write a book related to his life's work. His response was, "I will think about it when I get closer to retirement." Twenty years later, with his practice finally starting to wind down, he announced that he had completed the final edit of his book. Just a few short months after that, he was suddenly stricken with aggressive metastasized melanoma. He passed away on June 23rd, 2019. But, my father lives on in the artful illustrations of his brilliant ideas interwoven and crafted into these chapters. I am honored that, in his final wishes, he entrusted me with the task of making sure his contribution to the field of family law was properly published and promoted. Anyone, from the lay reader to the family law professional, will find this book to be enlightening. It is a thoroughly informative, insightful, and creative examination of how the art of negotiation can be used most effectively in the divorce process." - W. Lawrence Gaughan (son of Lawrence D. Gaughan)About the AuthorLawrence D. Gaughan was the founder and Professional Director of Family Mediation of Greater Washington. He earned a J.D. from the University of Montana (1957) and an LL.M. from the University of Virginia (1964). L.D. Gaughan practiced family law and family mediation in Northern Virginia from 1979 until his death in 2019. He was also a law professor at the University of Virginia, Washington & Lee University and George Mason University law schools. In 1979-80, L.D. Gaughan took a sabbatical from W&L to study family systems with Murray Bowen, M.D., and his staff in the Department of Psychiatry at Georgetown University. He was a member of the Virginia State Bar since 1967. From 1975-1999 he gave the annual keynote lecture on Family Law at the Virginia State Bar Association Conference. As an attorney, L.D. Gaughan consistently received the highest ratings for both legal ability and ethical standards ("AVR PreeminentTM") from Martindale-Hubbell. He was also rated 10 out of 10 by Awo. He was a founding member of the Professional Mediation Board of Standards, a 501(C)(3) board formed to frame and implement standards for professional family mediators, and was certified for collaborative practice. In September 2017, L.D. Gaughan received the Distinguished Mediator of the Year award from the Virginia Mediation Network at its annual conference in Richmond. In 2019, at their convention in Boston, he was posthumously recognized with a lifetime achievement award from the Academy of Professional Family Mediators.

How to Raise a Healthy Gamer
A former gamer and Harvard-trained psychiatrist offers a proven, tested plan to help parents define, set, and reinforce healthy boundaries around video games and help kids who have developed an addiction to gaming. "I highly recommend this calm, structured, and nurturing approach to better and less screen use."--Tina Payne Bryson, PhD, New York Times bestselling coauthor of The Whole-Brain Child and No-Drama Discipline How much should I let them play? How do I get them to be interested in anything else?! When it comes to family rules around video games, most parents are at a loss. After all, our technologically invasive world is something previous generations didn't have to wrestle with, so we have no model for how to guide our families through the rapidly changing landscape, no blueprint for setting healthy gaming boundaries and keeping them in place. A former Harvard Medical School instructor and one of the foremost experts on video game psychology, Dr. Alok Kanojia--known as "Dr. K" to his millions of followers--has firsthand knowledge of this modern issue: He needed professional help to break his own gaming habits in college, an experience that fueled his interest in learning how to help others. Drawing on Dr. K's professional specialization in working with people of all ages and varying degrees of addiction, and the most recent research from neuroscience and psychology, How to Raise a Healthy Gamer teaches parents a new skill set for negotiating gaming culture and offers solutions rooted in the science of treating addiction, including: - An eight-week, step-by-step road map for setting, enforcing, and troubleshooting healthy gaming boundaries.- Advice on how to react when your child becomes irritable, rude, or seemingly directionless.- Essential communication strategies for reaching kids who have developed a serious gaming problem.- The neuroscientific and psychological reasons that children gravitate to video games and how to help them meet these needs in real life.- Insights and advice on dealing with behavioral issues that often accompany game use: ADHD, spectrum disorders, and substance abuse. Whether your goal is to prepare your child for a healthy relationship to technology or to curb unhealthy amounts of time spent gaming, How to Raise a Healthy Gamer will help you better understand, communicate with, and--ultimately--empower your gaming enthusiast to live their best life.
Miracle of Effort
Miracle of Effort: Thalia's Autism Journey is the story of Thalia being diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder when she was two years old and her journey to graduating college and becoming an elementary school teacher. Through Thalia's journey, this book aspires to offer a sense of what children with autism and their families go through. The book takes the reader through the experiences, the emotions, the challenges confronted, the sacrifices demanded, and the decisions that needed to be made at different stages of a child's life. Thalia's family is at the center of this story. There were several critical decisions made by Thalia's parents, Donnie and Lorena. They were confronted with a traumatic reality that required perspective and patience, while fighting through moments of despair and sadness. It was Donnie and Lorena's determination that they would be part of the solution for their daughter that shaped Thalia's journey. It is Donnie's cousin, Lisa, who noticed Thalia's autistic behavior symptoms and delivered her initial learning therapy sessions. Each child that is diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum will have a different experience with the disorder. No two situations are the same. The following is Thalia's unique autism journey. Her Miracle of Effort. The book is intended to offer hope to the many families that are confronted with this disability. As Thalia says, "an autism diagnosis does not mean that a child cannot be successful. It just means that he or she will see the world in a different light." Thalia's simple hope is "to inspire autistic individuals to live up to their full potential and provide optimism to families."
No Children. It Makes Sense!
"Kids are great. It's a unique process that everyone should experience." Except that today, 1 in 20 French people refuse to have children. What are the reasons for this "voluntary infertility?"Do we really know why we have children? Isn't having children an obstacle to personal and professional development? In an overpopulated and polluted world, isn't it selfish to take up too much space by having a family? Don't children cost too much to individuals and to society? The author investigates with dozens of women and men for whom the "duty to procreate" rings hollow. Among these "non-parents" are exclusive lovers, artists, careerists, religious people, traumatized children, eternal teenagers, environmentalists, convinced Malthusians, as well as feminist activists who have made their refusal to give birth a standard, in order to assert themselves in a society that praises all mothers and family values.
This Is Adhd: A Workbook
Chanelle Moriah was officially diagnosed with ADHD at 22 and soon discovered just how inaccessible a lot of information can be for ADHD adults and those who may not yet have been able to obtain an assessment or support. So Chanelle created a simple resource that explains what ADHD is and how it can impact the different areas of someone's life. This is ADHD: A Workbook is a tool for both diagnosed and undiagnosed people with ADHD to explain or make sense of their experiences. It also offers non-ADHD people the chance to learn more about ADHD from someone who has it. With clear sections explaining the many aspects of ADHD, accompanied by Chanelle's beautiful illustrations and with space for readers to write down their thoughts, this workbook is designed to be personalized to the individual's experience. This is ADHD: A Workbook helps people feel less alone in their ADHD and brings knowledge to an often-misunderstood condition.
You and Your Adult Child
A "wonderfully innovative" (Jennifer Senior, New York Times bestseller All Joy and No Fun), much-needed guide for parents of people in their twenties and thirties from one of the world's leading developmental psychologists. Your child is now an adult, but your job as a parent is far from over. Instead, your role must evolve to meet their ongoing, changing needs. But what exactly are these new needs? And why are they so different now than they were when you were a young adult? This is the first comprehensive guide written for parents whose children are in two of the most crucial decades of life. Steinberg discusses topics as various as whether you should be involved in your child's college education, how to behave when they unexpectedly must move back home, how to state your opinion on their romantic partners, what to do when you disagree with the way they are raising their own child, and what parameters to apply if you want to give them money for a home or startup. He answers such challenging questions as: When do I express my opinion and when should I bite my tongue? How do I know if my son is floundering? Is it okay to help my daughter with her grad school application? What should I do if my kid is getting seriously involved with someone I think is dangerous? We have been helping our twenty-five-year-old financially for the last few years, but how long is too long? How can I help my adult child through a difficult psychological time? Leading psychologist Laurence Steinberg has devoted his forty-five-year career to researching parent-child relationships. Here, he provides some "must-read" (Martin Seligman, PhD, author of The Hope Circuit) principles to help parents with adult children think more intelligently about common issues, avoid minefields, weather the inevitable ups and downs, and create a stronger, happier, more effective bond with their child.
A Birkenhead Hippie
When Walter suddenly died on 22nd January 2023, Pauline instinctively withdrew from life for eight weeks as she and her spiritual brother Walter completed this book together. Pauline and Walter were the two middle kids in a family of four children born in Birkenhead. Northern England around the devastation created there after World War Two. They were raised amongst bombed houses and infrastructure and lived the aftereffects of mental and physical damage with those that had suffered through that war. This created their Hippie mentality of Peace, not War, which they demonstrated throughout their lives. A bond was formed that connected them both spiritually. Because they ended up living on opposite ends of the world, it meant written communication via email was their connecting device. Each had an instinct when the other needed help. Their souls were as one. They lived parallel lives, which were anything but peaceful, and shared their mutual highs and lows in the way twins often do. Within these pages, I give you Walter's words. This now exposes the real soul of the man that was my brother Walter.
Whispers of Love
Love is, perhaps, the greatest mystery of all time, and yet, it is also something most of us are in ardent pursuit of. Most of us believe love is embodied through eternal promises, life-long soulmates, and passionate kisses. Very few of us realize that it is actually more boundless than our preconceived romantic outlook of it. Eros, romantic love, is only one kind of it. The love we feel for ourselves, that which we feel for our friends, our parents and the world is equally, if not more, important. Love is not limited, it is we who set limits on it by thinking we need to store it up or it will run out. The world was founded on the basis of love, kindness, and adoration. It was with us from the beginning of humanity to now, and it will remain with us to the very end. Whispers of Love accurately explores love and boundaries, and reaching out to a general audience that centers its perspective of love on romcoms. It explores themes of gratitude, kindness, honesty, and bravery, complete with affirmations and examples.
Trees Make the Best Mobiles
Books like Simplify Your Life and Don't Sweat the Small Stuff have encouraged millions of readers to slow down and enjoy life more. Now, Jessica Teich and Brandel France de Bravo help new parents- who barely have time to return a phone call or wash a sock- learn to do less, listen more, and spend focused, fruitful time with their children. Practical and fun to read, Trees Make the Best Mobiles urges parents to treat every task-even diapering and feeding-as a chance to connect with their child, and gives calming advice about hot-button issues from pacifier use to temper tantrums. Parents will be relieved to discover that they don't have to buy lots of stuff-a tree outside a baby's window can serve as a mobile-or shuttle kids from one activity to another. In fact, in today's hectic, high-speed world, children need less "stimulation" and more unhurried interaction with the people who matter most. The authors call their approach "present parenting," because they believe being "present in the moment," without resentment or distraction, is the greatest present any parent can give.
The Captain's Gig
"The low stone wall zigzagged through a field long forgotten by three generations of farmers. It offered protection only if she sat with her back to it, leaned on one elbow, and kept her head below its smooth, weather-worn surface. She heard the shots before she heard him. He came stumbling through the dry, knee-high grass and half jumped, half fell over the wall. The moon gave off enough light to show the shine of fresh blood on his black cotton shirt. He tried to stop the bleeding by pressing his palm over the wound while he ran, but had to use both hands to turn, aim his Russian-made carbine, and fire. One shot. She heard a grunt, then the unmistakable thud of a body falling on the other side of the wall. She was too petrified to look. Instant quiet; his labored breathing was the only sound. He dropped his rifle, indicating they were safe. She was safe. He pressed his palm over the chest wound and put a finger to his lips. She lay down her own rifle, ripped off her blouse, and placed it under his palm. It was instantly soaked. She put her hand behind his head, pulled him next to her and whispered, "Don't leave me, damn you. Not now."

Issues with the Brain
Many people find mental illness to be perplexing, with many of them asserting that such conditions do not exist and that those who have them are to blame.
