Machado de Assis

Mario,Higa  著
Tamesis Books 出版
2025/06/11 出版

A lively and accessible introduction to Machado de Assis and his work Machado de Assis (1839-1908) is a world-class writer and arguably the greatest of Brazilian literature. Susan Sontag deemed him "the greatest writer ever produced in Latin America," and Harold Bloom, "the supreme black literary artist to date." John Updike called him a "master," and Carlos Fuentes, a "miracle." This book guides the reader through Machado's biography, times, and critical reception and examines his various personas - the translator, poet, playwright, critic, cronista, short story writer, and novelist - paying particular attention to his fictional prose, which most clearly conveys his acerbic criticism of Brazilian society and his deft view of the human condition. The book closes with an updated list of Machado's works available in English translation and a selection of further critical studies.

Tereus Through the Ages

de Gruyter 出版
2025/06/11 出版

This volume constitutes the first attempt at bringing together scholars from Greek literature, Latin literature and archaeology working on the tradition of the Tereus myth. More specifically, it will focus on the reconstruction, transmission and reception of the myth in Greece and Rome by examining the different adaptations and interactions of the story through the lens of assemblage theory. References to the Tereus myth date back to the Homeric poems; it was addressed by renowned dramatists, such as Aeschylus, Sophocles and Accius, before being adapted by Ovid. These different versions raise questions about the reconstruction of the myth and the representation of women, revenge, paidophagia and metamorphosis. Aspects of the story reverberate in ancient material culture, especially Greek vase paintings, which stem from different variants and traditions. Building on assemblage theory, the volume draws forth collaboration between specialists in Classical studies to examine how the myth was adapted in Greece and Rome without prestiging a Greek original. As such, it will be of significant interest for researchers and postgraduate students working on Greek and Roman tragedy, Ovid, classical reception and ancient material culture.

Jacob Mann

de Gruyter  著
de Gruyter 出版
2025/06/11 出版

Jacob Mann (1888-1940), a major figure in the fields of medieval Jewish history and rabbinic literature, was an early user of the Cairo Genizah materials to improve our understanding of these fields. This volume, based on papers delivered at a conference at St. John's College, Cambridge, assesses his scholarly contributions in the light of more recent developments in these areas. Yosef Ofer, Moshe Lavee, and Gila Wachman deal with Mann's work on the triennial Torah-reading cycle and hafṭarot, synagogue homilies, and a previously unknown midrashic work from the land of Israel. Ruth Langer and Stefan Reif appraise Mann's liturgical studies. Adiel Breuer, Sacha Stern, and Jennifer Grayson evaluate Mann's work on halakhic literature, the rabbinic calendar, and the history of the Babylonian yeshivot. Menahem Ben-Sasson reviews Mann's article on messianic movements during the Crusades. Miriam Frankel and Yoram Erder deal with Mann's contributions to Karaite studies. Richard Sarason provides an updated biography of Mann and bibliography of his scholarly writings. Together, they portray Mann as a scholar who was captivated by the riches of the Cairo Genizah and devoted his academic career to their exploration and publication.

City Fictions of the New India

Alex,Tickell  著
2025/06/11 出版

How does Indian fiction imagine urban transformation? India's cities were once maligned as places of economic stasis and deprivation but in the era of the so-called New India (2000-present) centres like Delhi and Mumbai have been recast as 'engines of economic growth' and reshaped by prestige infrastructure. Yet the provision of core infrastructures for all remains a major challenge for urban governance. City Fictions is the first study of its kind to read anglophone Indian writing infrastructurally: by taking account of the centrality of water utilities, waste-processing, residential architecture, and road, rail, and telephonic networks in contemporary representations of urban citizenship. In a detailed, historicized account of India's changing cities City Fictions analyses selected literary works in relation to key governmental and political discourses: from early nationalist ideas of command-economy infrastructure and mid-century town planning to futuristic visions of the Heritage Cities, Smart Cities and new urban satellite developments. It also plots changing ideas about civic identity, shaped by the rise of a consumerist middle class and the consolidation of a popular Hindu majoritarian politics. In the process, City Fictions develops an interdisciplinary literary-critical approach that draws on eco-criticism, urbanism, and new materialism. Covering key fictions by Arundhati Roy, Aravind Adiga, Vikram Chandra, Raj Kamal Jha, and Githa Hariharan, as well as literary journalism by Katherine Boo and Saumya Roy, graphic fiction by Sarnath Banerjee, and television drama by Richie Mehta, this book shows how fiction discloses vital issues of collective rights, equality, and resourcing that are immanent in the infrastructure of India's cities.

Visual Protest, Viral Images, and Virtual Participation

de Gruyter 出版
2025/06/11 出版

This interdisciplinary study sees press photographs of the BLM Movement in the US as agents for Black liberation. Close reading both the images and theoretical considerations on Blackness, photography, and the often intangible articulations of racism in today's society, the book focuses on the work the photographs do for the movement, as they politically garner attention and create discursive places, historically unsettle seemingly fixed narratives about the African American past, and virtually establish room for digital activist debate. Based on Azoulay's "event of photography" and Ranci癡re's "politics of aesthetics," it builds the theory of an attentive reading of photography and addresses the larger frameworks of photography as event in anti-racist considerations. In their political-aesthetic and performative dimensions, these photographs negotiate the current matter of Black lives in the United States and articulate ontological dimensions of Blackness as political struggle and affirmative position. They become mobile and material discursive places that lift the protested debates into wider fields of consideration and visibility, complicating notions of society, politics, and interaction.

Shakespeare's Borrowed Feathers

2025/06/10 出版

A fascinating exploration of the early modern authors who helped to shape Shakespeare's beloved plays. Shakespeare's plays have influenced generations of writers, but who were the early modern playwrights who influenced him? Using the latest techniques in textual analysis, Darren Freebury-Jones offers a fresh look at William Shakespeare and reveals the influence of a community of playwrights that shaped his work. He makes a compelling case that we need to see early modern drama as a communal enterprise, with playwrights borrowing from and adapting one another's work. From John Lyly's wit to the collaborative genius of John Fletcher, to Christopher Marlowe and Ben Jonson, Shakespeare's borrowed feathers offers fresh insights into Shakespeare's artistic development and shows us new ways of looking at the masterpieces that have enchanted audiences for centuries.

A letter to a Hindu

Leo,Tolstoy  著
2025/06/10 出版

Dated the 14th of December 1908, A Letter to a Hindu was a letter written by Leo Tolstoy to Tarak Nath Das, a Bengali revolutionary and scholar, in response to a request for support for India's separation from British rule, which argued that the Indian people should seek to free themselves from British rule through non-violent protests and strikes, and other forms of peaceful resistance. The letter soon gained international attention after it was published in the Free Hindustan, and it came to the attention of the young Mahatma Gandhi. Drawing on a variety of sources, cultures and teachings, Tolstoy's letter was instrumental in forming Gandhi's views on non-violent resistance - as Gandhi himself acknowledges in his introduction: 'To me, as a humble follower of that great teacher whom I have long looked upon as one of my guides, it is a matter of honour to be connected with the publication of his letter'.'One of the clearest thinkers in the western world, one of the greatest writers.' - Mahatma Gandhi'He is never dull, never stupid, never tired, never pedantic, never theatrical!' - James Joyce'The greatest of all novelists.' - Virginia Woolf'What he does serves to justify all the hopes and aspirations invested in literature.' - Anton Chekhov'What an artist and what a psychologist!' - Gustave Flaubert
