Remembering Lela & CharlieThe Blue Springs Years

Ingram 出版
2020/07/01 出版

Follow Lela & Charlie as they begin the closing chapter of their wonderful life together, as told by their daughter, Mable Gates, who lovingly cared for her parents on her Blue Springs property in those emotional final years. The responsibilities of grown children caring for their aging parents are less often talked about, joy-filled, and sometimes painful, but no less an important part of the human experience. It is our sincere hope that you enjoy these delightfully written short stories and that publishing them in this collection preserves not only each story and Mable's talent, but also provides a snapshot of life in 20th Century rural Mississippi.

Hard Sayings

Ingram 出版
2020/07/01 出版

Hard Sayings: The Rhetoric of Christian Orthodoxy in Late Modern Fiction by Thomas F. Haddox examines the work of six avowedly Christian writers of fiction in the period from World War II to the present. This period is often characterized in western societies by such catchphrases as "postmodernism" and "secularization," with the frequent implication that orthodox belief in the dogmas of Christianity has become untenable among educated readers. How, then, do we account for the continued existence of writers of self-consciously literary fiction who attempt to persuade readers of the truth, desirability, and utility of the dogmas of Christianity? Is it possible to take these writers' efforts on their own terms and to understand and evaluate the rhetorical strategies that this kind of persuasion might entail? Informed by the school of rhetorical narratology that includes such critics as Wayne Booth, James Phelan, and Richard Walsh, Hard Sayings offers fresh new readings of fictive works by Flannery O'Connor, Muriel Spark, John Updike, Walker Percy, Mary Gordon, and Marilynne Robinson. In its argument that orthodox Christianity, as represented in fiction, still has the power to persuade and to trouble, it contributes to ongoing debates about the nature and scope of modernity, postmodernity, and secularization.

American Literary Cultures

Ingram 出版
2020/07/01 出版

American Literary Cultures highlights literature written by regional authors--particularly those of Texas and the Southwest--and includes readings representative of a broad array of American social, religious, racial, and ethnic groups from first contact to early twentieth-century Modernism. Tracing the diverse heritages and global impulses that shaped America, this reader engages undergraduate students by offering a unique collection of texts that comprise American literary cultures. The selections showcase a culturally rich and heterogeneous tradition--indigenous, Latinx, European, and African American. The narratives and counternarratives offered here introduce students to a diversity of voices--near and far, familiar and foreign, present and historical. Through ballads, lyrical poems, tall tales, short stories, speeches, sermons, memoirs, and discourses on language and literature, students encounter diverse and often challenging works of American literary culture. The texts within and the vast panoply of worldviews and personalities they reflect challenge students to critical, contextual, creative, and empathetic engagement with the past. Through such engagement, students will better appreciate the present as they prepare to become citizens of an increasingly globalized world.

Sex and Vanity: A Novel

Kevin Kwan  著
Random House 出版
2020/06/30 出版

The iconic author of the bestselling phenomenon Crazy Rich Asians returns with a glittering tale of love and longing as a young woman finds herself torn between two worlds--the WASP establishment of her father's family and George Zao, a man she is desperately trying to avoid falling in love with. On her very first morning on the jewel-like island of Capri, Lucie Churchill sets eyes on George Zao and she instantly can't stand him. She can't stand it when he gallantly offers to trade hotel rooms with her so that she can have the view of the Tyrrhenian Sea, she can't stand that he knows more about Curzio Malaparte than she does, and she really can't stand it when he kisses her in the darkness of the ancient ruins of a Roman villa and they are caught by her snobbish, disapproving cousin, Charlotte. "Your mother is Chinese so it's no surprise you'd be attracted to someone like him," Charlotte teases. Daughter of an American-born-Chinese mother and blue-blooded New York father, Lucie has always sublimated the Asian side of herself in favor of the white side, and she adamantly denies having feelings for George. But several years later, when George unexpectedly appears in East Hampton where Lucie is weekending with her new fianc矇, Lucie finds herself drawn to George again. Soon, Lucy is spinning a web of deceit that involves her family, her fianc矇, the co-op board of her Fifth Avenue apartment, and ultimately herself as she tries mightily to deny George entry into her world--and her heart. Moving between summer playgrounds of privilege, peppered with decadent food and extravagant fashion, Sex and Vanity is a truly modern love story, a daring homage to A Room with a View, and a brilliantly funny comedy of manners set between two cultures.

Cock-Eyed Voice

Barry,Grills  著
Ingram 出版
2020/06/01 出版

Collected short stories representing nearly fifty years of publication by author Barry Grills, including 'A Game With Adonis' ..."so successful the reader squirms in self-recognition" (Books in Canada, 1980).A past chair of the Writers' Union of Canada, Barry Grills is an experienced journalist, biographer and novelist who has been writing with uninterrupted dedication for more than fifty-five years. This short story collection is a concoction of anecdotal memoir and nine short stories published during the 1970s, 1980s and in the first decade of the new millennium. Let's face it-fifty years is half a century. Barry has written a great deal since then. And a great deal has happened to the writing business during that period. The brief introductory anecdotes catalogue the adversity of the writing business, what has been lost, what has been gained, and the choice a writer has in getting into print. The need to write does not guarantee the economic success of writing as a profession. With 10 books to his credit, including 4 bestselling musical biographies on the lives of Celine Dion (A New Day Dawns (with Jim Brown) and Falling Into You), Alanis Morissette (Ironic), and Anne Murray (Snowbird; all by Quarry Press), Barry Grills has done all right. He's met some interesting people along the way, and fifty years of published writing means fifty years of editors, publishers and other writers--W.J. Barnes, Al Purdy, Caroline Heath, George Bowering, Gail Fox, Myrna and John Metcalf, Clark Blaise, Alistair MacLeod--all of whom had a role in the changing nature of how writing got published then or gets published now. The writing process probably hasn't changed much, historically speaking, but getting it into print has changed a great deal. Barry's introductions to the stories in this volume offer a personal and historic view of how the writing business has changed, and his nine finely-crafted stories appeared alongside accomplished authors such as Matt Cohen, John Newlove, Alice Munro, Hugh Hood, Joyce Carol Oates, Kent Thompson, Elizabeth Spencer, Hugh Garner, Mordecai Richler, Morley Callaghan, Andreas Schroeder, Dave Godfrey, David Helwig, and others. Also by Barry Grills: Too Late the Hunter - "Psychological thriller about the interweaving of the lives of three men ... Grills writes masterful description! His phrases gave me goosebumps more than once ... a bingeworthy novel!" (Author Marla J. Hayes).I And You, And Me And Her - "Stories about men in love with women they can't have ... very detailed and vivid" (BookLife Prize, 2018).Roadkill - "Set in a compelling dystopian future ... the story develops greater urgency as it progresses. Writing in fluid, lyrical sentences, Grills demonstrates a clear facility with language and tone ... alluring descriptions ... striking prose and an enticing premise allow this novel to stand out within the larger category of dystopian fiction" (BookLife Prize, 2018).Shortlisted for the 2018 Whistler Independent Book Awards; 2018 Next Generation Indie Book Awards FinalistEvery Wolf's Howl - "An accomplished author of stories, ... Barry Grills ... in his first memoir ... [writes] a moving story of friendship and transformation, and anyone who has ever longed to companionate with wild creatures will be transfixed" (Winnipeg Free Press, 2012).

Fuck IsolationA Tribute to the COVID-19 Experience

Ingram 出版
2020/06/01 出版

This tribute to the poets was born in March 2020, during the beginning weeks of California's stay-at-home orders for the COVID-19 pandemic. Poets Underground, a community of poets who perform weekly at Amplified Ale Works Acid Vault room in San Diego, continued to meet online, expressing their raw emotions and hardships in lockdown. The intense missing of in-person connections led to the coining of the catch phrase and title of this anthology. Divided into five sections, each dealing with different phases of the challenges the pandemic created, this volume features 134 poems from 72 poets. With shifts in the political and the emotional since April, these poems reflect only the first month of lockdown, and life in the world post-COVID-19.

Retrato de una mujer perdida

Ingram 出版

" -Paola Valverde Alier -.Costa Rica

Mart穩n Ad獺n's experimental style has been admired and celebrated by authors as diverse as Mario Vargas Llosa, Allen Ginsberg and Roberto Bola簽o; and The Cardboard House stands out in history as a major statement of the avant-garde movements in Latin America. This new English translation strives to preserve the experimental style of The Cardboard House in its original Spanish language, and intends to reestablish its importance as one of the crucial texts of the Latin American literary avant-garde.Mart穩n Ad獺n (Lima, 1908 - 1985), pseudonym of Ram籀n Rafael de la Fuente Benavides, was a Peruvian poet and writer whose body of work is notable for its experimentalism and metaphysical depth. Gift

Polytekton  著
Ingram 出版
2020/05/01 出版

GIFT is the aptly named new volume by Duane Vorhees. Unlike his previous book, THE MANY LOVES OF DUANE VORHEES, the new one is not monothematic. It explores the subjects that are the basis of great poetry -- self, life, politics, place, faith, philosophy, and art among them -- in a variety of styles and moods. Throughout, the poems employs wit, creativity, and erudition in an approachable manner. Anyone who enjoys meaningful poetry should look forward to reading and re-reading this remarkable tome. As Duane writes in his opener, Medicine men summon the sacred smokeof sage sweetgrass and cedar. They unrein the Dream. And poets compose. They unmine the mindfield, inciteinsight. A book of poetry by "one of our most important poets." (see review below) What Reviewers Think... a delightful collection of poems! At times playful, at times sober and reflective [on the topics of] friendship, envy, lust, the philosophy of existence, [written] in a voice that is sincere, original, captivating. The reader becomes an explorer, and the exploration brings great joy and value.- Peter Wodarz, Professor, Okinawa Christian University I always have approached a Vorhees book with a smile on my face, knowing that soon I would chuckle at his politely naughty sense of humor and delightful word play. [...][His] respect for language and the beauty in which it can take multiple directions takes on the tone of a blues number [...]He understands the beauty of our frailties, the lost and found and lost yet again inevitable pattern of the human experience. [...][T]his collection of poems embraces the elusiveness of life's beauty [...]. Everything has its moment.- Dave NorrisAssociate Professor of English, University of Maryland Global Campus [V]isionary and eclectic [...] [The author's] metaphorical poetry speaks directly to the reader, challenging [...] us to concentrate on lexical progression and his astonishing rhythmic, galloping rhyming scheme, [following] an unknown but intriguing poetic path, passing distant lands and meeting an array of people, cultures and beliefs [...] This is indeed a cinematic journey through the eyes of a world travelling word weaver, who has tasted life's feast and who now throws existential crumbs our way; satisfying our global palette [...] whilst at the same time closing our eyes and bravely attempt to savour unknown poetic flavours.- Don Beukes, Author of The Salamander Chronicles I kept thinking that I had encountered what could have happened had e.e. cummings and Franz Wright collaborated on a project. Vorhees is a wordsmith who unlocks the subtle meanings - entendres, double and triple - and makes us marvel at the power of language. This is a collection of brilliant poems. [...] [It] is poetry that intends to open the eyes, inform the intellect, and tangle the reader in the intricacies of words. It succeeds. [...] Duane Vorhees emerges as one of our most important poets.- Charlie Brice, Author of Mnemosyne's Hand

The Afternoon of the Elephant and Other PoemsTheAfternoon of the Elephant and Other Poems

Ingram 出版
2020/05/01 出版

How lucky we are to have this volume of Luis Benitez's poems in English! A major figure in contemporary Spanish-language literature, Benitez does not merely make poems; he thinks in poetry. The poems in The Afternoon of the Elephant are a way of reflecting on the physical and social world at the same time as they make that world real by considering animals, oceans, friends and lovers, the sabretooth tiger, the heron, the salmon, the trout, the skunk, even the escaped elephant who interrupts our mundane conversations and eats fruit from the caf矇 table. The Afternoon of the Elephant and Other Poems destroy the habitual and ask us to consider the way thought enriches experience and restores our awareness of the breadth of the world outside ourselves. Benitez is a voice in these pages, a passionate reason that rejects the meanness that walks through our everyday lives, that celebrates what is overlooked.George Franklin (poet)

In the Bear’s House

Ingram 出版
2020/05/01 出版

"Let me say at the outset that this book is not about Bear (he would be spoken of in the singular and masculine, capitalized and without an article), or it is only incidentally about him. I am less interested in defining the being of Bear than in trying to understand something about the spirit of wilderness, of which Bear is a very particular expression. . . . Bear is a template of the wilderness."--from the Introduction Since receiving the Pulitzer Prize in 1969 for his novel House Made of Dawn, N. Scott Momaday has had one of the most remarkable careers in twentieth-century American letters. Here, in In the Bear's House, Momaday passionately explores themes of loneliness, sacredness, and aggression through his depiction of Bear, the one animal that has both inspired and haunted him throughout his lifetime. With transcendent dignity and gentleness, In the Bear's House celebrates Momaday's extraordinary creative vision and his evolution as one of our most gifted artists.

Gerbert, a French monk educated in the sciences and literature of Muslim Spain, has risen to the Chair of St. Peter as Sylvester II, and for a brief while co-rules the Holy Roman Empire. His friend Zosimus has compiled his writings into a book at the behest of Pope Benedict VIII. An archbishop, Arnulf, jealous of Gerbert's prominence, hears of the book and wants it to expose him as an agent of Satan. Benedict has political reasons for preserving the book, but Zosimus must travel a dangerous road from Reims to Rome in order to present the manuscript to him. Gerbert's Book is a suspenseful imagining of Gerbert's brilliant but fated life during the tumultuous European era just prior to the year 1000.

Shaz Bostwick's personal views and business ethics collide when Camilla Gibson walks into his office, seeking his help. The treatment her daughter needs is available in Chicago, but Camilla is almost out of time and has several issues working against her. Raised as an immigrant, Shaz knows the heartache of family separation firsthand. In a race against the clock and the authorities, he calls in favors but receives a disturbing offer. Let baby Ayanna slip through the cracks in exchange for a handsome reward. Fed up with politicians and businessmen with too much money and too little scruples, Shaz and his fellow Kings of the Castle band together to stem the flow of illegal adoptions, while they solve the mystery of who wants their mentor dead.Camilla Gibson has traveled the world in her capacity as an adventurer, sometime model, and blogging celebrity. In her eyes, the charming, but tough lawyer is her last resort before deportation. Shaz is smart and tenacious, with renowned negotiating skills and a reputation for making a way when there seems to be none. If she can get past the biggest crisis in her life, then maybe the spark of attraction that sizzles between them will develop into something magical.

Lost Island

Ingram 出版
2020/02/01 出版

LOST ISLAND was Barbara Follett's third and last novel. It tells the story of Jane Carey, a young woman from Maine whose character and philosophy bear a striking similarity to her creator's.A lover of woods and mountains, Jane finds herself working in a dusty New York office during the early years of the Great Depression. Her job is dull, her friends are in trouble, and she yearns for adventure. She finds it in a schooner anchored in the harbor, which soon whisks her away to... where? Jane doesn't know nor care. Jane and second mate Davidson fall in love; and when the ship is wrecked during a mighty storm, they find paradise on an uncharted island in the South Pacific. Years pass, until the modern world resurfaces with its teeth bared, forcing the couple to deal with their new, heartbreaking reality.Barbara's earlier novels--THE HOUSE WITHOUT WINDOWS and THE VOYAGE OF THE NORMAN D.--were published by Alfred A. Knopf when she was twelve and thirteen. Her literary career looked bright, but after her father deserted his family in 1928 her world fell apart. A fearless girl, Barbara managed her grief by cutting a new path--one full of adventure, wisdom, and love.LOST ISLAND mirrors the lives of its author and Edward Anderson, a sailor she met at sea in 1929. Five years after finishing it, on December 7, 1939, Barbara walked out of her home in Brookline, Massachusetts, and was not heard from again. She was twenty-five.This expanded edition includes three other stories by Barbara--ROCKS, TRAVELS WITHOUT A DONKEY, AND WALKING THE MALLORCAN COAST--and an afterword by her half-nephew, Stefan Cooke, whose BARBARA NEWHALL FOLLETT: A LIFE IN LETTERS was published by Farksolia in 2015.

Finding Myself in Thee

AuthorHouse 出版
2020/01/13 出版

"Finding Myself in Thee" is a book of short stories and poetry inspired by God with the help of many people who asked me to write and create for specific occasions. The short stories are practical revelations of the natural, correlating with the spiritual. Each day that I wrote a story, I consulted the Lord about what to write, and I asked for divine intervention. It not only touches the heart, but meant to move you into a new realm of life in him.

Conversations With Dorothy Allison

Ingram 出版
2019/12/16 出版

Since the publication of her groundbreaking novel, Bastard out of Carolina, Dorothy Allison (b. 1949) has been known--as with Larry Brown and Lee Smith--as a purveyor of the working-class, contemporary South. Allison has frequently used her position, through passionate lectures and enthusiastic interviews, to give voice to issues dear to her: poverty, working-class life, domestic violence, feminism and women's relationships, the contemporary South, and gay/lesbian life. Often called a "writer-rock star" and a "cult icon," Allison is a true performer of the written word.At the same time, Allison also takes the craft of writing very seriously. In this collection, spanning almost two decades, Allison the performer and Allison the careful craftsperson both emerge, creating a portrait of a complex woman. In the absence of a biography of Allison's life, Conversations with Dorothy Allison presents Allison's perspectives on her life, literature, and her conflicted role as a public figure.

Aiiieeeee!

In the eyes of mid-twentieth-century white America, "Aiiieeeee!" was the one-dimensional cry from Asian Americans, their singular expression of all emotions--it signified and perpetuated the idea of Asian Americans as inscrutable, foreign, self-hating, undesirable, and obedient. In this anthology first published in 1974, Frank Chin, Jeffery Chan, Lawson Inada, and Shawn Wong reclaimed that shout, outlining the history of Asian American literature and boldly drawing the boundaries for what was truly Asian American and what was white puppetry. Showcasing fourteen uncompromising works from authors such as Carlos Bulosan and John Okada, the editors introduced readers to a variety of daring voices.Forty-five years later the radical collection continues to spark controversy. While in the seventies it helped establish Asian American literature as a serious and distinct literary tradition, today the editors' forceful voices reverberate in contemporary discussions about American literary traditions. Now back in print with a new foreword by literary scholar Tara Fickle, this third edition reminds us how Asian Americans fought for--and seized--their place in the American literary canon.
