The Mansion
This classic Christmas story by Henry Van Dyke explains the true spirit of giving in a powerful, captivating way. In the story, John Weightman (a wealthy businessman with a high opinion of himself and the future mansion he deserves in heaven) does much good in the world. Despite his good deeds, Weightman is misdirected. Most of the "good" he has done, rather than being unselfish, is calculated to benefit either himself or his business. As Weightman explains, "Of course you have to be careful how you give, in order to secure the best results-no indiscriminate giving-no pennies in beggar's hats! Try to put your gifts where they can be identified and do good all around."Fortunately, Weightman receives a wake up call through a beautiful Christmas Eve dream. In his dream, Weightman previews what his heavenly mansion would really look like and learns the truth of the Scripture "Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where thieves do not break through nor steal."This wonderful story was originally published in 1911 by Henry Van Dyke, a late 19th and early 20th century American clergyman. Its emphasis on the timeless ideals of sympathy, self-sacrifice, and good-old fashioned kindness make it a must-read for every Christmas, right alongside Charles Dicken's Christmas Carol.

The Reception of Allen Ginsberg's Howl. Queerness and Homosexuality in the Context of 1950s' America
Seminar paper from the year 2022 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 2,0, Ruhr-University of Bochum (Fakult瓣t f羹r Philologie), language: English, abstract: This paper analyzes the reception of one of the most influential poems from the post-war era, "Howl", which was written from the perspective of a homosexual poet, Allen Ginsberg, who was living in America during the 1950s, especially focusing on his representation of queerness and homosexuality and how this portrayal shaped the future of literature. The reception of different pieces of literature has always had a strong impact on the authors of all fields and their further lives. While today, books or poems are mainly being taken off the public market when it is assumed that they would have a negative impact on the recipients, the censorship laws in the earlier years, especially during the time after the second World War, were much stricter. The removal of an author's work back then would mostly depend on the strict norms of society and if the piece of literature deviated too much from them - there was much less room for literary freedom; especially when a piece of literature portrayed themes, which were not common in society and thus not welcomed by the majority of all possible recipients.

The Evolution of the Black Panther. Analyzing the Progression of T織Challa織s Mindset Based on Different Fictional Texts
Seminar paper from the year 2021 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 1,7, Ruhr-University of Bochum (Institut f羹r Philologie), language: English, abstract: This paper analyzes the evolution of T織Challa as the Black Panther regarding the progression of his mindset by taking a look at different fictional texts that reach from comic books to movies about the character, while also referring to secondary literature in order to examine the different conceptions that people receive from these diverse representations of the Black Panther. Obviously, the Black Panther can織t really be seen as a linear character, due to the fact that the different fictional texts are not created or produced by the same person. While the Black Panther was firstly introduced by Stan Lee as a white, U.S.-American comic author, the film from 2018 was produced by Ryan Coogler, an African American director, which seemingly allows different representations of the character. Keeping that in mind, I織m not going to point out how the character evolves from one storyline to the other, but rather take a look at how T織Challa織s motivation has changed and how his mindset matured over time. Over 50 years ago, on the 12th of April 1966 in the 52nd edition of the first volume Fantastic Four comic books, the Black Panther was introduced as the first black superhero in the acquainted American comic book branch. This appearance laid the foundation for T織Challa, the Black Panther as a character and Wakanda as a nation with great history and tradition, being admired not only by comic book or movie fans, but also many other people in today織s society. The character was created by comic author Stan Lee and illustrator Jack Kirby, who aimed to address the lack of black characters in the comic book industry by introducing a strong, independent figure, who is not part of a group like the Fantastic Four for instance, but rather his own personality.
