The Idea of Europe
In view of the challenges--many of which are political--that different European countries are currently facing, scholars who work on the eighteenth century have compiled this anthology which includes earlier recognitions of common values and past considerations of questions which often remain pertinent nowadays. During the Enlightenment, many men and women of letters envisaged the continent's future in particular when stressing their hope that peace could be secured in Europe. The texts gathered here, and signed by major thinkers of the time (Rousseau, Montesquieu, Voltaire, Kant, Hume or Sta禱l for instance), as well as by writers history has forgotten, present the reflections, with a couple of chronological extensions (from Sully to Victor Hugo) of authors from the long eighteenth century--the French Empire and the fall of Napoleon generated numerous upheavals--on Europe, its history, its diversity, but also on what the nations, which, in all their diversity, make up a geographical unit, have in common. They show the historical origins of the project of a European union, the desire to consolidate the continent's ties to the Maghreb or to Turkey, the importance granted to commerce and the worries engendered by history's convulsions, but also the hope vested in future generations. The Idea of Europe follows its sister edition in French, L'id矇e de l'Europe au Si癡cle des Lumi癡res, also published by Open Book.

The Double
Are we witnessing a psychotic break? Or, has someone with physical features strikingly similar to his own spotted an opportunity, and seized it? In Fyodor Dostoevsky's The Double the question lingers to the end. As with all of Dostoevsky's writings, however, we are also left wondering if social commentary is being made, although in reality he is driving us all to maddening introspection. Are we so different from Golyadkin Sr. and Golyadkin Jr.? Are we at war with ourselves? Or, are others at war with us? Are these mutually exclusive propositions? In this edition, translated faithfully by Constance Garnett and published in 1923, readers can wrestle with these questions themselves.
I Want to Keep Smashing Myself Until I Am Whole
"A brilliant selection . . . Canetti's range astonishes." --Claire Messud, Harper'sA career-spanning collection of writings by the Nobel laureate Elias Canetti, edited and introduced by Pulitzer Prize winner Joshua Cohen. He embarked on no adventures, he was in no war. He was never in prison, he never killed anyone. He neither won nor lost a fortune. All he ever did was live in this century. But that alone was enough to give his life dimension, both of feeling and of thought. Here, in his own words, is one of the twentieth century's foremost chroniclers: a dizzyingly inventive, formally unplaceable, unstoppably peripatetic writer named Elias Canetti, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1981. I Want to Keep Smashing Myself Until I Am Whole is a summa of Canetti's life and thought, and the definitive introduction to a writer whose genius for interpreting world-historical changes was matched by a keen sense of wonder and an abiding skepticism about the knowability of the self. Born into a Sephardi Jewish family in Bulgaria, Canetti later lived in Austria, England, and Switzerland while traversing, in writing, the great thematic provinces of his time: politics, identity, mortality, and more. Sourced from Canetti's landmark texts, including Crowds and Power, an analysis of authoritarianism and mobs; Auto-da-F矇, a darkly comic, daringly modernist novel about the fate of European literature; the famous sequence of sensory-titled memoirs, including The Tongue Set Free and The Torch in My Ear; and never-before-translated writings such as the posthumous The Book Against Death, this collection assembles its luminous shards into the fullest portrait yet of Canetti's remarkable achievement. Edited and introduced by Pulitzer Prize winner Joshua Cohen (Book of Numbers, The Netanyahus), I Want to Keep Smashing Myself Until I Am Whole leads us from Canetti's polyglot childhood to his mature preoccupations, and his friendships and rivalries with Hermann Broch, James Joyce, Karl Kraus, Thomas Mann, Robert Musil, and others. This collection is also interspersed with aphorisms and diary entries, revealing Canetti's formal range and stylistic versatility in flashes of erudition and introspective humor. Throughout, we come to see Canetti's restless fascination with the instability of identity as one of the keys to his thought--as he reminds us, It all depends on this: with whom we confuse ourselves.

Samuel Johnson’s Parliamentary Reporting
Samuel Johnson's Parliamentary Reporting: Debates in the Senate of Lilliput by Benjamin Beard Hoover reexamines a long-neglected body of Johnson's early prose and restores it to a central place in his literary development. Originally written as magazine reconstructions of parliamentary debates for *The Gentleman's Magazine*, these texts have often been dismissed as mere journalism or derivative exercises. Hoover challenges this assumption, arguing that the *Debates in the Senate of Lilliput* represent Johnson's first sustained effort at large-scale prose composition and thus provide essential insight into his evolving style, rhetorical strategies, and political imagination. By situating Johnson within the broader eighteenth-century tradition of parliamentary reporting and exploring the peculiar circumstances under which the *Debates* were composed and published, Hoover reveals their importance both as historical documents and as works of literary art. The study unfolds in four major parts. Hoover first establishes the historical background of parliamentary reporting and Johnson's unique contribution to the genre, then traces the publication history of the *Debates* from their first appearance through subsequent reprintings and critical receptions. A third section undertakes detailed comparisons between Johnson's reconstructions and parallel reports in the *London Magazine* and other surviving records, exposing the creative liberties he took and the distinctive Johnsonian qualities that emerged. Finally, Hoover reads the *Debates* as literature, analyzing them as dramatic exchanges and as early examples of Johnson's prose style. Far from being mere "apprentice work," Hoover contends, the *Debates* illuminate Johnson's early mastery of argument, irony, and cadence, and demand recognition as a formative achievement. This book repositions the *Debates* from poor relations to significant works within Johnson's canon, offering scholars and readers alike a fuller understanding of his intellectual and literary trajectory. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press's mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1953.

Corona Times & Other Climes
Wayne Carr has been writing poetry since schooldays, his practice both interrupted and enhanced by a career in English teaching, he believing that poetry should be of use, recording family and social events such as birthdays, friendships and deaths as well as events in wider society.Corona Times & Other Climes is his first collection and brings together two groups of poems, the first mainly written under the spell of the Corona blight. This group essentially follows the seasons as events unfolded and records not only the impact of the virus itself but also the social stresses and fissures those years exposed. More wonderfully, they also record the benign presence of Nature with its redeeming and healing powers, the uplift of which many others felt during this trying time. The Other Climes section was written before Covid and serves to remind us all that there are worlds beyond Covid and Life for all its waywardness is ever giving.
Dangerous Creations
The 'samizdat' ('self-publication') sphere that flourished between c.1980-1990 in former East Germany produced an extraordinary flowering of hundreds of tiny magazines and graphic/poetry journals that evaded the strict censorship of the state. The artists, musicians and writers who produced them lived mostly illegally in the rundown housing stock of the major East German cities (especially Prenzlauer Berg in Berlin) and created a Bohemian enclave within the dictatorship. This volume presents the proceedings of the 'Dangerous Creations' roundtable discussion, which brought together key international scholars of the GDR 'samizdat' scene, along with writers and artists who were once active in the scene, and researchers of Russian 'samizdat'. The event provided researchers and artistic practitioners alike with the opportunity to discuss and compare the potentially transnational forms that literary creativity and subversion took in the repressive East German state and beyond.
