The Princess Behind Thorns
For this princess forced under an enchantment, escaping from her spell is only the first ordeal. Claiming the throne is even more dangerous. Princess Rose Amelia has spent a hundred years trapped in a magical garden, surrounded by walls of thorns that protect her from rescuers she never wanted. Nothing ever changes - until the spell twists to threaten her as well, and a prince finally breaks through the thorns. Prince Terrence knows he would never be his father's preference to inherit the throne. But he also knows his oldest brother won't take care of their people, and rescuing the Princess Behind Thorns is the only way he can become heir. He planned on marrying her to claim the inheritance; he didn't plan on falling in love with her. Escaping from the magical garden and returning to court will plunge Terrence and Rose both into a deadly world of politics, intrigue and betrayals. Making a claim to the throne doesn't guarantee it will be accepted, and deciding to marry doesn't mean that they actually can. To protect the country and themselves, they must learn who to trust and who is an enemy - and somehow learn how to admit their feelings for each other too. This fantasy romance, the first in a series, brings a new angle to the story of Sleeping Beauty by starting where most versions end. If you enjoy heroines finding their strength, fantasy worlds with a touch of intrigue, and slightly magical cats, you won't want to miss the Thorns Saga.

Once Upon a Time in Hell Valley
The present story takes place in the distant past. It is when the industrial revolution reached its pinnacle of prosperity. During this time, human society had made incredible scientific and social advances that promised a much better and brighter future. However, there was still a significant distance to travel before reaching a desirable and ideal society.Religious and sectarian prejudices have unquestionably hindered enlightenment throughout history and are undoubtedly one of the major obstacles to the advancement and excellence of the human race. In actuality, it is only through the erasing and dimming of these ideas and attitudes that bright and new horizons will be unlocked in front of us, allowing humans to arrive at the source of freedom and happiness. This story follows the life of a daring and free-spirited man with lofty goals and ideals. He is willing to go through any hardship to achieve his desires and dreams. It is a characteristic shared by all people who have complete faith in their goals and ideals and are not afraid to face danger. But occasionally, we come across forces that challenge our inner resolve and make our movements a little shaky. The main character of this story is also confronted with such a predicament. He is engaged in a conflict with a group of people who are extremely bigoted and superstitious and who are adamantly opposed to modernity as well as the social and cultural advancements of that time.Nonetheless, he makes every effort to open a window for these people and illuminate their dimly lit minds. It is clear that he will experience numerous challenges as a result. The most difficult task in the world, according to one thinker, is to eradicate prejudice and superstition from people's minds. However, there are always those who are unafraid of petrification in their surroundings and who warmly welcome such dangers. Last but not least, such individuals can contribute to the advancement and excellence of humanity and release us from the bonds of corrupt and unjustified beliefs. In this context, it is not inappropriate to bring up some of the attitudes of Thomas Paine, who played a significant role in the intellectual and cultural development of his era."These are the times that try men's souls; the summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of his country; but he that stands it now deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: it is dearness only that gives everything its value."In another place, Thomas Paine added: "Men who are sincere in defending their freedom will always feel concern at every circumstance which seems to make against them; it is the natural and honest consequence of all affectionate attachments, and the want of it is a vice. But the dejection lasts only for a moment; they soon rise out of it with additional vigor; the glow of hope, courage, and fortitude, will, in a little time, supply the place of every inferior passion, and kindle the whole heart into heroism."
Medusa
I grew up the daughter of Ceto and Phorcys, the ancient sea god of the hidden dangers of the deep seas and gods of the sea creatures. Unlike any other offspring of a god I was born mortal, an outcast from my family. I left to go to the city of Akitiki to become a priestess of Athena's temple, only to get stuck in between the feud of gods. For years there have been stories about Medusa, coming and going in different versions. Finally the truth of Medusa's life is revealed; another tragic mythology story of a human stuck in between the feud of gods. This is a story from Medusa's perspective, explaining parts of her life never spoken of before. Her life started being born from immortal gods as a mortal herself, then a beautiful priestess of Athens temple, then an outlaw monster wanted dead. Figuring out who Medusa is and what her real purpose is, she's set on a journey to find herself with the help of the people around her-struggling with the realization of who she really is and fighting to her controversial end.
Legends of the Capilano
Bringing the Legends home Legends of the Capilano updates E. Pauline Johnson's 1911 classic Legends of Vancouver, restoring Johnson's intended title for the first time. This new edition celebrates the storytelling abilities of Johnson's Skwxw繳7mesh (Squamish) collaborators, Joe and Mary Capilano, and supplements the original fifteen legends with five additional stories narrated solely or in part by Mary Capilano, highlighting her previously overlooked contributions to the book. Alongside photographs and biographical entries for E. Pauline Johnson, Joe Capilano, and Mary Capilano, editor Alix Shield provides a detailed publishing history of Legends since its first appearance in 1911. Interviews with literary scholar Rick Monture (Mohawk) and archaeologist Rudy Reimer (Skwxw繳7mesh) further considers the legacy of Legends in both scholars' home communities. Compiled in consultation with the Mathias family, the direct descendants of Joe and Mary Capilano and members of the Skwxw繳7mesh Nation, this edition reframes, reconnects, and reclaims the stewardship of these stories.
Fairy Tales from the Rock
In the beginning, fairy tales were all we had. Tales to explain the unexplained, to impart morality, and culture. But more often than not, to warn. From the editors of the From the Rock anthologies comes a new selection of stories, carefully curated from some of Newfoundland and Labrador's favourite authors. Between these pages, old tales are revisited, familiar foes lurk, and fairy tales for the modern age are born. Including the work of Bronwynn Erskine (By Reservation Only), Melissa Bishop (The Fairies of Foggy Island) and David James Lynch (All Things Broken).

Like Smoke, Like Light
A stunning debut!"Ogawa's debut collection of 17 speculative shorts stuns with its delicacy ... Harkening back to the oldest folk and fairy tales and raising pointed questions about how humans value and devalue each other, this is a showstopper." -Publishers Weekly, starred review"Her work is unexpected, often horrific, and always enthralling. Weaving Japanese folklore in with the new, the weird, and science fiction horror elements, Ogawa's body of work is prolific and evergreen." -Thea James, Tor.comA monster wearing the stolen dress of a deceased mother agrees to help the woman's orphaned son. A girl whose blood can cause hallucinogenic visions makes a daring escape from the merchants who traffic her. In a society where people are prized for their jewel-hued skins-indigo, silver, amber, emerald-one girl endures brutal bruises to shine brightest of all, while another, her eyes sealed inside a featureless helmet, risks death to retrieve colors from the outside world. In the future of that culture, one where androids serve with brimming resentment and artificially altering one's skin color can be a crime, the most ordinary in appearance can prove the best detectives, and the most subtly effective rebels. On a far distant space station, another android encounters a goddess humans forgot."At pure surface level, these works appear rooted in the fantastical and magical, but as soon as you think you've found your footing and understand where you are, Ogawa warps your perception almost imperceptibly until the world is completely unfamiliar again." -Haralambi Markov, Tor.comLike Smoke, Like Light, the debut collection of short fiction from Japanese author Yukimi Ogawa, gathers seventeen tales that Locus Magazine has described as constructed in a "wild-but still grounded, feeling more like SF than fantasy-fashion." As novelist and poet Francesca Forrest writes in her introduction, "Ogawa is a remarkable light in the science fiction and fantasy firmament," who "writes unsettling stories that are by turns horrifying and touching." This book "give us space and time to think about how we really feel about tricky questions-like what makes a monster" and how loving families can be found when one accepts "the forms they choose to wear."Cover art and illustrations by Paula Arwen OwenMore praise for Like Smoke, Like Light"Inventive, fantastical, and original; Ogawa transforms mythology, ghost stories, and the tropes of science fiction into fresh, new visions."-A. C. Wise, Bram Stoker Award-nominated author of The Ghost Sequences"Yukimi Ogawa's first collection reveals her as a superb talent. These unsettling, sometimes harrowing journeys lead always toward grace and strange beauty."-C. C. Finlay, winner of the World Fantasy Award and author of the Traitor to the Crown series"These luminous stories-playful one minute, tragic the next-feel like the folklore of some alternate reality world. Often, they explore themes of how our identity is linked with our physicality ... how others perceive us, and the ways in which that outside perception affects how we perceive ourselves. Yukimi Ogawa's tales are as enchanting, heartbreaking, and gorgeous as the characters they revolve around."-Jeffrey Thomas, author of Punktown and The Unnamed Country
Why? Or, How a Peasant Got Into the Land of Anarchy
A revolutionary fairy tale for adults that makes sharpening your critique of capitalism fun. Why? follows the travels of a boy named Pochemu--"Why" in Russian--as he tries to understand the Tsar's empire, capitalism, state violence, and more. The answers his rapid-fire questions elicit, which make less and less sense the deeper he probes, are just as ridiculous today as they were a century ago, and just as descriptive of a society gone wrong. When Pochemu eventually enters the Land of Anarchy, he is confronted by his own strangeness to its citizens, who study the bizarre customs he brings to their free society. This is a timeless tale of the ludicrousness of power and its deluded defenders. In this fable, a child's innocent questions meet the lies used to justify a world of cruelty and inequality. The result is quasi-absurdist, political comedy. Abba and Wolf Gordin, Jewish anarchists in the Russian Revolution, wrote proletarian literature to enlighten and entertain. It's a genre that no longer really exists, but given this delightful book, maybe it should.

They're darker and often don't end very happily but they're often far more interesting. This version of Grimms' Fairy Tales includes the original versions of the stories translated by Edgar Taylor and Marian Edwardes.

Sardinian Folk Tales
In the Sardinian language, legends, folk and fairy tales are indicated with the expression Contos de foghile and Contus de forredda (stories by the fire-place). Cherished for centuries in the culture of the Sardinians and transmitted exclusively by story-telling, this book is born with this precise objective: get people, both adults and children, in close contact to Sardinia's most famous folk and fairy tales, which come from its nature and scenarios, and from the historical and social changes that have marked it, including the linguistic and cultural contacts Sardinians have engaged in with other populations in the Mediterranean, from prehistory to the present. These are, in other words, stories that have similarities with European, Asian and African fables, but at the same time have peculiarities so strong they would not exist in any other place, if not for the Island, such as the Janas, the Launeddas and the Nuraghes. Sardinian oral tradition has preserved the local versions of some of the most famous and widespread fables in the world, but adding such substantial differences to render them absolutely extraordinary. Among these we also find Snow White and Cinderella. As in all fables, where wonder and fantasy are blended one into the other, in this collection we have appearances of Kings and Prince Charmings, witches and step-sisters, intelligent servants, witty courtiers and clever women, and of course talking animals and mermaids with magical powers worthy of the One Thousand and One Nights; and we can even find Demons and Devils, with an intact flavor of Inquisition and Spaniardesque.

The Tale of Indigo
What is happening to our world?Natural disasters such as earthquakes, hurricanes, and floods are wreaking greater havoc than ever across the globe. So it is in this tale. The forces of nature are warning us. The Tale of Indigo Indigo is the sea and sky, and Sienna is the earth. They fall in love and create the world's flora and fauna including humans, whom they endow with the greatest gifts. But their good intentions go awry as humanity becomes greedy and pollutes the world. As in myths of old, Indigo and Sienna exact punishment on humans. The outcome is what we see now across the globe-a taste of what is to come. To survive, all organisms inhabiting the earth attack humanity. The Tale of Indigo presents tongue-in-cheek views on timeless matters, such as how we began, why we are here, and where we are heading-not to mention a new take on climate change. The Tale of Indigo is supplemented by The Quid Es-fourteen poems from a poet who has been quietly observing, and for whom all is not so sombre.Cavalarico Books

The Accidental Universe and Other Stories
The Accidental Universe and Other Stories begins with a riff on the oldest tale known to man and then takes us from the beginning of the twentieth century up to the present day and beyond. Some are traditional short stories about one person while others vary the point of view and still others are in the form of one-act plays. Individual lives are explored in different venues and at different times, but they all touch on the search for meaning in a chaotic universe. From the religious beliefs of Christopher Columbus to those of modern evangelicals, from the words of Shakespeare to those of Samuel Beckett, from the paintings of Andrew Wyeth to those of Andy Warhol, and in the lives of grave diggers as well as artists, this unique collection of humorous and serious stories will engage the minds, hearts, and imaginations of readers on an unforgettable journey.

The Plot Against Lithium
The myth of the Gods; the embodiment of the human intelligence. In this story the plot; the fictional character that predominately play the role of Bartolomeu, he takes on the identity of an AI upbringing, taught by the Gods method of resurrection. With Bartolomue's paleontology ways brought on a tradition of a hallucinogenic episode, opportunist you might say. Allowing it to impose, it not only took over his work but also his soul; he walks through history bringing his understanding of life, where he compares and contrast the two. Midway in the story; he falls in love with a young lady, it was the greatest interest of a few friends, a four play even for him it was to hold on to each encounter he had with each one of them.
