The Man in the Pines

David,Nash  著
Ingram 出版
2020/03/01 出版

Legends are somewhat deceitful. Leaving no room for sequels. Books never written. Stories never told. Until now.It is the late 1800s, and Paul Cunningham is about to establish himself as one of the most iconic American folklore figures of all time by logging his way through the northern United States. What he doesn't realize is the ruinous cost of his conquest. The Man in the Pines is the reimagined life story of the famous American folk legend, Paul Bunyan. It is a tale of demi-god strength, love lost, hubris, and destruction. It is a story of conservation and, hopefully, redemption. It is the life of Paul Bunyan you've never heard before.

Pennsylvania Fireside Tales Volume VIII

Ingram 出版
2020/03/01 出版

In this eighth volume of the author's Pennsylvania Fireside Tales series, the reader will find more additions to the considerable collection of old-time Pennsylvania mountain folktales and legends the author has managed to save from oblivion during his almost fifty years of collecting them from the little-traveled byways and corners of the Keystone State. The tales included in this volume are just as absorbing and intriguing as those that have appeared in the previous volumes, and they bring the reader once again back to a time when the state's mountains were alive with wolves, mountain lions, Indians, ghosts, witches and other colorful characters of a forgotten age. Sit down, open the book, and journey back to that unique period. Pause and savor the sights and sounds that were typical of those times. Ponder upon the tales and decide for yourself whether they are true or not, for that is part of their attraction; the sense that some part of a story that seems nothing more than a "tall" tale may have some truth behind it, and in this book the author provides some clues to help you reach those conclusions.

Ghost Hunters Canon 01

S H,Marpel  著
Ingram 出版
2020/03/01 出版

"It was a dark and stormy night, and everyone was sitting around the glowing fireplace, safe and warm against the raging weather outside. Someone said, 'John, tell us a story.' So John began..."The story "Ghost Hunters" started a series with two spirit-guides recruiting the human John Earl Stark, a mystery writer and part-time cattle farmer.Since that humble beginning, more spirit-guides and even goddesses have joined the Library's team to help ghosts and other beings in trouble to solve their own mysteries. And then John writes up their stories all as fiction - because no one would believe these tales otherwise. But the stage was set from that first book - that all life should be treated with respect, and the way to solve a mystery is to get the story told. This first canon is part of a complete collection of 38 stories that enlighten, entertain, and inspire readers over and over. Because they are written simply, and not as throwaway fiction, as stories that you get something new from each reading. Mysteries that seem to be re-writing themselves in between readings - because they change the reader with the ideas in them. And after his first two years of writing, John Earl Stark shows no signs of slowing down his prolific output. Because he's just working to keep up with all the stories that keep appearing. These stories is pretty straight forward if you stick to reading them in sequence. So - that is what I recommend. With canons, reading is simpler. The second canon picks up where the first left off. That will be your next assignment. It's on you if you read out of order.Never before published into single volumes, these stories wiil leave you wondering why no one has treated ghosts like this before. But then, if you were in their shoes, wouldn't you appreciate such treatment?Yes, even if you're a goddess. Those, too.Open the cover to see all the stories this first canon contains...

Croakies Monster

Sam,Cheever  著
Ingram 出版
2020/02/13 出版

Ancient Chinese proverb says, give cat mouse and give frog fly, they'll soothe your monsters so you won't die.Okay, maybe I just made that up. But I'll try anything at this point. Croakies is suddenly being overrun by monsters. Yeah. Monsters. And I have no clue where they're coming from. Are they tied to something we've done in the past? Do they have anything to do with the strange phone calls I've been getting from a really prickly local author? Most importantly, how are we going to explain to the humans about the appearance of a certain giantnormous blue monster flinging car-sized cookies around? Where did all these squirrel squattin' songbirds come from? And, for the love of the goddess's favorite spanks, why is there ice all over the floor?Sigh. The frog and the cat? Yeah, they're really pretty useless on this one. But at least they're living the good life thanks to my tireless efforts to feed, house, and clean up after them and their naughty friend Hobs. Yay me. Mega monster boogers! This magic wrangling gig is for the birds. And the frogs. And the cats. And the hobgoblins. And, apparently, for the monsters hiding at Croakies.

Parzival

Ingram 出版
2020/02/11 出版

German poet Wolfram von Eschenbach's romance story "Parzival" tells the whirlwind tale of a young man's life as a knight in search for the Holy Grail. It follows the medieval heroic story of Parzival as he tries to balance his desire for love with his quest for the Grail. At first, Parzival is childish and ignorant, and his bad choices prohibit him from obtaining the Grail. Only through purging his soul through a number of trials and hardships is Parzival sanctified enough to be chosen by the Grail. An interesting choice by von Eschenbach in retelling this legend is to not portray the Holy Grail as a cup, as typified by the classic English versions of the Arthurian legends. In his version, the Grail is not even associated with the Christian concept of the chalice of Christ. Rather, the Holy Grail is a life-giving stone that provides food and eternal life to the men and women who live in the castle that protects the Grail. The story is also a close look into the life and culture of the folk traditions that pervaded the time. Wolfram von Eschenbach includes such common events as tournaments and jousts, which add to the realistic properties of the text. He also made a conscious choice with the type of "romance" that the poem uses; von Eschenbach stays true to the courtship and kinship rules of medieval romances, making this work a window into the societal rules that governed the behavior of knights, their relationships, and their pursuit of courtly love. The Nibelungenlied

Anonymous  著
Ingram 出版
2020/02/11 出版

Thought to have been first written down in the 12th century by an author who is still unknown, "The Nibelungenlied", translated from Middle High German as "The Song of the Nibelungs", is an epic German poem reflecting the oral tradition, heroic motifs, and actual events and individuals from the 5th and 6th centuries. This remarkable work begins with an assurance of both joy and sorrow, though ultimately tragedy reins in "The Nibelungenlied". The early chapters recount the young life of Siegfried, a great Netherlands prince, who slew a dragon and bathed in its blood while still young, giving him extraordinary strength. He goes on to meet the lovely princess Kriemhild, whose brother Gunther requires his help to marry the strong Icelandic Queen Br羹nhild in exchange for his sister's hand. All is well until Br羹nhild discovers the deception of Gunther and Siegfried, and her successful plot to murder the latter incites bloody revenge from Kriemhild. From the court of the Burgundians to the court of Etzel, from terrible deaths to hidden treasure, "The Nibelungenlied" is a masterful illumination of German antiquity and dramatic legend. Often and justly compared to "The Iliad" of the Greeks, this skillful epic poem has inspired artists throughout the centuries, most notably Richard Wagner in his opera cycle 'The Ring', and will doubtlessly continue to inspire readers in the centuries to come. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper.

The Insomniac Booth

Clive,Gilson  著
Ingram 出版
2020/02/01 出版

The Insomniac Booth invites readers once again into Clive Gilson's hauntingly vivid world, where magical realism blends seamlessly with the old-world charm of folklore and faery tales. Following the acclaim of his previous collection, The Mechanic's Curse, this second anthology delves deeper into the strange and the beautiful, offering a spellbinding journey through urban decay, fractured memories, and the eerie wonder of everyday life. These stories are more than just tales-they are intimate explorations of universal themes: the fragility of memory, the loss of loved ones, and the fine cracks in our urban and inner landscapes. With each story, Gilson paints a vivid picture of forgotten worlds-splintered glass, dust-filled rooms, shafts of golden light breaking through the darkness of war-torn memories. His words are a reflection of life's impermanence, capturing both the terror and beauty in the small, often overlooked details. There's a rhythmic, poetic quality to Gilson's storytelling. He makes the ordinary extraordinary, uncovering hidden meaning in the smallest of things. His sharp, dark humor, laced with cynical wit, contrasts with the ethereal, creating a unique blend of tones that will captivate readers from the first page to the last. The Insomniac Booth lingers long after the stories have ended, resonating deeply with our shared human experience. Gilson's work is for those who find beauty in the cracks, who see shadows in the daylight, and who understand the bittersweet nature of life's fleeting moments. These are stories that echo in the mind, stories of mystery and melancholy, wrapped in the magic of the mundane.Prepare to be transported into a world of black-and-white memories, where every page reveals something new-something deep, dark, and profoundly moving.

How easily we take the Sun for granted. We are conditioned to its rising and setting on time, and assume it enjoys doing so, or more likely is indifferent. Unawqi, Hunter of the Sun reveals a more perilous tale: the Sun, Aakti, is a being who is a reluctant player in providing light and warmth to our world, and even more has always desired to leave us to die if he didn't have certain personal complications standing in his way. Aakti will stop at nothing to get what he wants, even if that involves murder of his own kin or annihilation of an entire living planet. Norse Mythology for Bostonians

Ingram 出版
2020/01/01 出版

Norse Mythology for Bostonians is a humorous retelling of the trials and tribulations of Odin, Thor, and the other Norse gods. Regarded as an authentic, new "Edda" (as the original Icelandic source material is called), the main narrative is told in the charmingly quaint dialect of a foul-mouthed Bostonian. New mythological episodes, such as Thor's attempt to renew his driver's license and Odin's mysterious journey to Boston Common, supplement the more traditional stories such as Odin's acquisition of the mead of poetry and the theft of Idunn's apples of youth. Substantial historical background information about the myths is provided in the introductory material, as well as in the footnotes that occur throughout the volume. Based on the long-running McSweeney's Internet Tendency column Norse History for Bostonians, Norse Mythology for Bostonians, introduces readers to a fresh, new perspective on both familiar and previously unknown narratives of Norse mythology.

The Sovereign Rose of Morbid Lore

Tree,Story  著
Ingram 出版
2020/01/01 出版

The Sovereign Rose of Morbid Lore is the fictional account of a spiritual journey, characterized by a flower. In this case, a morbid rose that experiences metamorphosis and is transformed into an alternate life form. More specifically, an introspective bicyclist that reflects and assesses the meaning of its own life. From the beginning of life to the end of validity; depicting itself as a worldly, ethereal traveler of the earth as well as the universe, trying to differentiate between reality and otherworldly phenomena.Chasing its dreams "from here to the grassy hills of eternity." Overcoming the obstacles of life, as well as the atrocities of humanity, and the trials and tribulations of all people that have ever lived.Through the use of symbolism, all names, characters, and narratives represent the primary character's personal feelings and or emotions; spiritual, as well as demoniacal. The quest, the journey, the odyssey is to experience the fibers and the fabrics of sovereignty, despite its inherent morbidity. To be loved, and to be forgiven for all of its sins and all of its imperfections by the omniscient, omnipresent Lord, so that it can be accepted into the flowerbeds of heaven, and spend eternity with all the insects of the world and the buzzing of the bees.
