The Heart of a Continent
This early work by Francis Younghusband was originally published in 1896 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. 'The Heart of a Continent' is a work detailing the author's extensive travels through Asia. Francis Younghusband was born in 1863 at Munree, British India, the son of Major-General John W. Younghusband and Clara Jane Shaw. Younghusband attended Clifton College, Bristol, before entering the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in 1881. After his time at the Academy he was commissioned as a Subaltern in the 1st King's Dragoon Guards where he began his military career. He rose through the ranks and in 1902, due to fears of Russian expansion, the now Major Younghusband, was promoted to the position of British Commisioner to Tibet, a post he held until 1904. Younghusband married Helen Augusta Magniac, with whom he had two children, a son who died in infancy and a daughter, Eileen Younghusband. Their daughter went on to become a prominent social worker.
Livingstone's Travels and Researches in South Africa - Including a Sketch of Sixteen Years' Residence in the Interior of Africa and a Journey from the Cape of Good Hope to Loanda on the West Coast, Th
This vintage book contains a biographical account of the author's life and missionary travels in and around South Africa. First published in 1868, this volume offers a fascinating insight into the South Africa in the late nineteenth century, and is highly recommended for those with an interest in historical literature of this ilk. Contents include: "Personal Sketch", "Highland Ancestors", "Family Traditions", "Grandfather Removes to the Lowlands", "Parents", "Early Labors and Efforts", "Evening School", "Love of Reading", "Religious Impressions", "Medical Education", "Medical Diploma", "Theological Studies", etcetera. David Livingstone (1813 - 1873), was a Scottish Congregationalist pioneer medical missionary with the London Missionary Society, as well as a famed explorer. Perhaps one of the most popular national heroes of the late-nineteenth century in Victorian Britain, Livingstone had a mythic status, which operated on a number of interconnected levels: Protestant missionary martyr, working-class "rags to riches" inspirational story, scientific investigator and explorer, imperial reformer, anti-slavery crusader, and advocate of commercial empire. Many vintage texts such as this are becoming increasingly rare and expensive, and it is with this in mind that we are republishing this volume now, in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition.

Then, after endless months stuck on ice floes, Shackleton and a rag-tag team set out in a small open boat across the open ocean in an attempt to save everyone. The unlikely end is something to behold."At midnight I was pacing the ice, listening to the grinding floe and to the groans and crashes that told of the death-agony of the Endurance, when I noticed suddenly a crack running across our floe right through the camp."The fate of Ernest Shackleton, the Endurance, and her crew have been studied for over a century. Book 1 - 100 Days in South East Asia
100 Days in South East Asia is the first instalment of the ten-part series, 'The Tales of a Thousand Adventures'. Each book tells the story of the 100-day journey in that part of the world. Travelling to South East Asia was a very spontaneous trip, made with very little planning. Departing England, the first brief stop was in Dubai, before carrying onto Thailand. In Bangkok, I met some friend, and we started our tour. We travelled across Thailand, navigated the Mekong River into Laos, then onward to Vietnam. We explored the country while making way down into Cambodia, then back to Thailand completing the loop. With such little preparation, we left most of the planning to the road ahead of us. As my first backpacking trip, I had no idea what to expect, and there was no way I could have imagined the adventure that lay before me.

A Beginner’s Guide to Japan
"Arguably the greatest living travel writer" (Outside magazine), Pico Iyer has called Japan home for more than three decades. But, as he is the first to admit, the country remains an enigma even to its long-term residents. In A Beginner's Guide to Japan, Iyer draws on his years of experience--his travels, conversations, readings, and reflections--to craft a playful and profound book of surprising, brief, incisive glimpses into Japanese culture. He recounts his adventures and observations as he travels from a meditation hall to a love hotel, from West Point to Kyoto Station, and from dinner with Meryl Streep to an ill-fated call to the Apple service center in a series of provocations guaranteed to pique the interest and curiosity of those who don't know Japan--and to remind those who do of its myriad fascinations.

Playland In Photos
Forty years after its gates closed for good, the Playland Amusement Park comes back to life in Playland In Photos: Ocean City Amusement Park Memories. Overflowing with rare Playland images, the book takes readers on a time-travel journey back to the glorious Ocean City summer nights when a monorail-ringed amusement park sat on a western pointing finger of sand at 65th Street.Playland was a cherished landmark for millions of Eastern Shore visitors from 1965-1980. That's because it had something for everybody. The largest free parking lot in all of Ocean City; a Kiddie Land with an extensive collection of rides; the only wooden coaster in Ocean City; the warehouse-sized Ghost Ship dark ride; Ocean City's largest go-kart track; and shimmering bayside sunsets that no Crayola 64 box could equal. Especially when viewed from the elevated cars of the Sky Ride.Author Earl Shores first visited Playland as a child in 1965, and was mesmerized by the park. So, it was a dream come true when he landed a ride-running position at Playland for the summer of 1980 (an experience he recounts in his 2019 book Playland: Greetings From Ocean City, Maryland). From this "hands-on" time in the park Shores imparts a deeply personal perspective to Playland in Photos. He also enlisted the Ocean City Life-Saving Station Museum, the National Amusement Park Historical Association, and the American Amusement Park Museum to contribute their expertise to the book. The result is the most authoritative account of Playland ever assembled, including a special section that explores what happened after the park closed in 1980.Don't miss the chance to relive cherished and simpler times in Playland In Photos!

The Japanese capital is home to any number of well-hidden treasures that are revealed only to residents and travellers who find their way off the beaten track. An indispensable guide for those who thought they knew Tokyo well or would like to discover the other face of the city.
Thailand
Thailand is a magical, beautiful, and contrastive place which has a lot of traditions and really appreciate them. Thailand also is the country of smiles, Buddhism with a lot of nice temples, kind people, picturesque sea and mountain views, rich flora and fauna, fruits, shopping, and very spicy but at the same time very tasty food. All this and much more makes Thailand one of the most attractive countries for tourism. But so to speak, it is better to see once than hear a hundred times. After all, each of us sees this world in his own way.
India Through Virgin Eyes
The pleasure of entering other people's lives is an adventure into the glamour of Indian imagery; the ambrosia of their Gods and Avatars is everywhere. This story is told through the eyes of thirty real life characters - funny, intelligent, clever, respectful; their every conversation being about destiny. My visit to India smashed all stereotypes, none of them were true, and every perception that I had gained from mainstream news media and reading academic books were also far from true. You see, I went to India with Virgin Eyes that would perceive perception as reality and truth. Striving to look at the world as though one had never seen it before, a search for pure perception, a fresh vision for me, I left my mind open and empty so to speak, realising that if I freed myself of stereotypes and abstractions I would live in a richer and more interesting world. This book is not a common travelogue as you'll find in the travel supplements of the weekend papers. No, I don't go with that awful tourist idea that India is only a museum of antiquities and art. The Indian people are more marvelous than the land and temples.

Turn Right For Japan
After a decade of overwork, fidgety food and a sensory overload of noise and neon, British expat Steve Tallon needed a break from Japan. So he took a world map, drew a line between London and Tokyo and wondered... could he cycle it? As he turned off his computer and rode the office elevator for the last time, little could he imagine that he would soon be squashing scorpions on the floors of Central Asian teahouses, cavorting with small time Uzbek mobsters and spending solitary, spectacular nights in the Gobi Desert under stars so bright they hurt. With humour, humility and cringeworthy honesty, Steve presents an entertaining from-the-saddle account of faraway desert nations, leg-thrashing mountains and eye-opening conversations from a legion of colourful characters encountered along the way. In Turn Right for Japan, follow Steve as he puffs his way into fitness, confronts loneliness and constantly doubts his resolve, yet somehow arrives in Tokyo some 10,000 hard-earned miles later. From Belgrade to Bishkek, Tabriz to Turkmenistan, fill your water bottles, saddle up and enjoy the ride!

Tatami Days
"You see, Japan does not actually rest atop an infinite pile of turtles, but on the back of a giant carp . . ."In his mid-thirties, Australian freelance writer and PhD graduate Michael Guest headed for Japan on a whim, worked as tenured Professor in a national university, and stayed fifteen years. Memoir and cultural reflection, his captivating story is one of growth, adaptation and an ever-deepening appreciation of an enchanting, at times perplexing, society. The author is a specialist in modern literature and humanities, with many academic and media articles to his credit, alongside international academic conference lectures. Guest takes an intellectual step beyond other books on culture and the expatriate experience in producing a rich and witty read. In his original take on the creative non-fiction memoir, we pursue the elusive spirit of the country. Notably, the book offers an insider's view of the nuances of university and professional college cultures, and the challenges and opportunities encountered in a career in Japan.A very human account of a stranger in a strange land, Tatami Days is a series of adventures coming to grips with Japanese people and their culture. From everyday customs such as sake and chopstick etiquette; through temple practices, pachinko halls, and wonderful foods; to Noh, Kabuki and avant-garde theatre, we are taken right into the Japanese psyche. Social mores, conventions, historical background, and the underlying meanings of everyday actions are explored and reflected upon. Interactions with the Japanese are engaging, at times amusing, and illustrate the character of the people brilliantly. The Japanese have great reverence for the natural world, and the entrancing pictures Guest paints of scenery, historic places and city life are superbly executed, complete with underlying context. We are with the author, an honest, sensitive and insightful observer, for every faux pas, humorous or otherwise, that anyone might make, stepping into the unknown, discovering tools for understanding and connection. His journey is also one of self-discovery, enforced by isolation and the consciousness of being forever discerned as an outsider. Anyone fascinated with Japan and its people, or contemplating spending time there, will find this book to be particularly delightful and valuable. As a lived study in cross-cultural communication, Tatami Days offers insightful perspectives on developing cultural awareness, understanding and sensitivity. The book would make an excellent discussion raiser if used in an educational context, such as courses on Japanese life, or cultural awareness for international training and development.

NepĀl MaṇḌalA Pilgrim’s Guide to the Kathmandu Valley
Nepal Mandal is an in-depth guide and survey of the principle Buddhist and Hindu monasteries, temples and pīṭhs of the Kathmandu Valley. In seven parts under the rubric of Buddha, Padmasambhava, Gorakhnāth, Śiva, Nārāyaṇ, Mātṛkās and Peaks and Rivers, over one hundred and twenty powerplace are described, many fully described under the heads Myth, Legend, In The Past, and On The Ground. Myth and Legend lay the background; In The Past provides the history; and On The Ground guides the pilgrim-visitor around the site indicating its main features. Many readers will find the sections on Myth and Legend to be the highlight of the book. Retold with a jogi's insight these sections constitute a radical spiritual dimension to the powerplaces. The last and largest section includes description of the sacred Buddhist and Hindu art and architecture - sometimes in great detail - for the visitor focused on the religious art forms - the objects of veneration. In that way this large book is a guide to the principle cities of the Valley-Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur - at the same time visiting the treasures in the villages between these cities. A practical iconography of the pantheon of the Kathmandu Valley is thereby built-in, with sections of the text dedicated to it. Over a hundred high quality black and white photographs document the stone and metal sculpture of Nepal Mandal. Since most of the work on this book was done in years before the 2015 earthquake it constitutes an historical record of the art 'gone missing' and the architectural damage done. The author, a prominent exponent of Tantric Buddhism in both theory and practice, spent four decades of unending pilgrimage through the monasteries and temples of the Kathmandu Valley propitiating their numinous inhabitants and documenting their invaluable contents. An extensive Supplement provides rare pilgrim itineraries for the Kathmandu Valley, a full Glossary defines technical terms, and a detailed Table of Contents and an inclusive Index provide easy access.

Elizabeth Park
Located in Trenton, Michigan, Elizabeth Park was a gift from the descendants of the Slocum and Truax families to the people of Wayne County. Donated in 1919, the property was transformed into an oasis providing recreational opportunities previously unavailable to the area. Besides picnicking, the park provided merry-go-rounds, swings, and slides for children as well as tennis courts, shuffleboard, and horseshoes for the adults. As time and tastes changed, the park had to evolve. In its heyday, during the 1930s, the 162-acre park saw nearly a million visitors a year; however, that number dwindled to a low point during the 1970s and 1980s. Amid many complaints to Wayne County officials, a countywide park millage was passed. Today, the park still retains some of the old but is also a carefree center of activity with boat races, antique car shows, and music festivals.

South
First appearing in 1919, "South: The Endurance Expedition" is the gripping account of those who traveled with Sir Ernest Shackleton on his third expedition to Antarctica. In August1914, Shackleton set out with a crew of twenty-eight aboard the ship "Endurance" in an effort to become the first men to cross the vast Antarctic land mass, a grand plan that was given the lofty title "The Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition." At the same time the "Endurance" set out into the Weddell Sea so that a group of six, including Shackleton, could traverse the vase continent, another ship, called "The Aurora" landed on the other side of the continent to leave supplies for Shackleton's group. Their adventurous and daring exploration soon became a struggle for survival however when the "Endurance" was trapped by solid ice which slowly crushed and disabled the ship and left the crew stranded in a barren snowy wilderness. What would follow is one of the most gripping tales of heroism and survival in the face of almost certain death to have ever been told. Drawing upon the first-hand accounts of the men who lived to tell the tale, "South: The Endurance Expedition" is a harrowing and fascinating saga of polar exploration. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper.
Sh*t Towns of Australia
From dusty desert sh*tholes to free-range bogan breeding grounds, to the bin-chicken playgrounds of our megacities, Sh*t Towns of Australia is a guide to the concrete, fibro, and methamphetamine wastelands that we like to call home. From Coober Pedy to Canberra, from Ballarat to Broken Hill, from Logan to Launceston, Sh*t Towns takes us through the veritable f*ck-ton of crappy towns and cities that make up the "Lucky Country"--profiling all the best places not to visit or, heaven forbid, live. The 60 towns and cities reviewed in this volume have been carefully selected using an exacting set of scientific criteria developed at the prestigious University of Nimbin, combined with extensive field research, a desire to offend, and where possible a sense of humor.

Tokyo Travel Sketchbook
Tokyo Travel Sketchbook traces the journey of illustrator and graphic designer Amaia Arrazola on a four-week trip through the beating heart of Tokyo. When Arrazola accepts a month long artist's residency in the Japanese capital, she has little idea of what to expect but gamely packs her paints and pencils and seizes the opportunity to create an illustrated diary of her time there, filling the pages of her sketchbooks with curious images of life in the world's largest city. This book provides readers with a unique vision of Japan's capital, as seen through the eyes of an artist. Arrazola immerses herself in the cult of Hello Kitty and the pop-eyed charms of "Kawaii" cute culture, while conveying the collision of traditional and modern Japanese culture in the female Samurais she meets and draws. The city's cultural curiosities come alive in a metropolis that is ever on the go, as she browses sex shops, drinks pink coffee, eats spaghetti sandwiches and photographs subway sleepers. Throughout her explorations, Arrazola uses the concept of wabi sabi as a guiding principle--coming to see her own life and artworks as examples of "flawed beauty" and imperfectly perfect Zen design. The result is a fresh, often funny, one-of-a-kind look at a city that works hard and plays hard--in many surprising ways. At the heart of Tokyo Travel Sketchbook are two contradictory Japans--the glittering neon world of a high-tech ultramodern society existing side-by-side with a nation where ancient tradition holds sway and where the unadorned, the simple and the silent are prized and celebrated as much as the new, the fashionable and the trendy. These competing realities make for a memorable visual journey and a stunning souvenir of a stranger's brief stay in a strange land. From smoking laws to high-tech toilets, Arrazola finds beauty in the weirdness and imperfection of this modern metropolis. *Recommended for readers ages 14 & up*

The Book of Puka-Puka
Puka-Puka is a triangular coral reef, some seven miles in circumference with three islands. It frames a lagoon so clear that one can see the coral forests some ten fathoms below. It is the most remote, and probably the most beautiful, of all the Cook Islands. The Book of Puka-Puka is not about travel, it is about staying in one place. It is about living as a conspicuous stranger and slowly allowing yourself to become absorbed into the ways of an ancient, indigenous community. This book was not composed by a colonial administrator, a missionary or an anthropologist, but by a hedonistic South Sea trader - a young American who fishes, picnics, swims, sleeps and falls in love but fortunately also listens out for good stories.
