C’era una Volta in Wooster Square
"Wooster Square represents so many things that make our city special: a rich history and character, amazing architecture and buildings, world-class restaurants and food, and strong community bonds that bind us together-like those demonstrated in the legacy of our city's Italian American immigrants. Stefania Munzi captures so much of this with her artistry and clever rhymes." - The Honorable Justin Elicker, Mayor of New Haven"This illustrated story of the Wooster square neighborhood by artist Stefania Munzi is both charming and quite poignant. It brings many of my personal memories immediately to mind. The many times I spent on Wooster Sq with my grandfather, and the strong sense of security and unity in that community that was always present whenever I was there." - Marc-Anthony Massaro, Sculptor "Indicando la via al Futuro,""Very special paintings capture the people and places of a very special part of my old hometown. It's like seeing them for the first time. This lovely book makes me proud of my roots!" - Paul Giamatti, actor and native son of New Haven"C'era Una Volta in Wooster Square is a beautiful book and a great read. Made me hungry for a slice of pizza and a cannoli from Pepe's" - Steve Schrippa, actor The Sopranos"Stefania's book is a beautiful tribute to Wooster Square and the people and places that make it so special. She draws our community as I know it-fulll of warmth, light, and deep Italian roots!" - Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03)A reflection of the culture and history of Wooster Square in watercolors. New Jersey
New Jersey is rich in natural beauty and American history. Its miles of beaches, charming seaside towns, lush parks and diverse communities make it a popular and vibrant tourist destination. The state gets its nickname, The Garden State, from a speech made at the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition in 1876. Home to more than 9,000,000 people, the state offers a wide variety of places to live, from highly urban Newark, just across the Hudson River from New York City to picturesque small towns like Cape May to boardwalks and tourist attractions that provide non-stop action and entertainment. The places showcased in this book offer pleasure to resident and visitor alike.
Connecticut
Although Connecticut is one of the smallest states in the Union, it is packed with history, culture and natural beauty. European settlers began arriving in the area that would become Connecticut in the early 1600's. In 1639 they adopted a document called the Fundamental Orders as the basis of the colony's government. The Fundamental Orders are the first written constitution in the country and account for the state's official nickname, The Constitution State. A group of Puritan settlers from the Massachusetts Bay Colony arrived in 1664 and the colony continued to grow. Connecticut was one of the thirteen colonies that declared independence from British rule and, after the American Revolution, Connecticut became the fifth state to ratify the constitution. Today, Connecticut is home to many businesses and industries and to many excellent schools and universities, most notably Yale University in New Haven which was founded in 1701. Situated only 100 miles from New York City, the city is an ideal place to live with access to the amenities of New York while offering a smaller, more beautiful urban environment in which to live. Many residents commute to New York City daily. The state's 600 miles of coastline provide ports and beaches and the state continues its maritime tradition. It is home to the Coast Guard Academy in New London. Places covered in this book include: Hartford and surroundings Historic mills, villages, lighthouses and beaches William Gillett's Castle Submarine Force Library and Museum Mark Twain's House Yale University Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center Mystic Seaport New England Air Museum Harkness Memorial State Park. With its rich history, natural beauty, ideal location and wide range of cities and towns, Connecticut truly offers something for everybody.

Realm of the Adventurer
"Your heart and soul are never more apparent until you are alone in the wilderness."- Patrick MalyszekAs a young boy I always had a notion there was another side to life, a parallel life that was available to all but only a few that were graced with the ability to acknowledge and experience it. I wanted to find this parallel life and experience what it had to offer as compared to our regular everyday life...but I did not have a clue as to how to find and experience it. I would go into the forest every day regardless of the weather and spend hours and hours just thinking and exploring, trying to determine what the trigger was in order to experience this different side of life. What I learned is that you cannot use your regular life's experiences as the trigger. In order to really reach and experience the other side of life you must have not the ability, but rather the passion and desire to be a person that is willing to break their own social norms and challenge themselves with out of control experiences. These experiences create what I call a "bridge" from our common life to the life of an adventurer, which leads into what I have termed The Realm. A place of true love, support, and confidence. The transition from my common life, which is great by the way, to The Realm, which is mystic, is not an easy task and for most will never be achieved or experienced. But I made it, I found my "bridges" into The Realm. Yes! Bridges. There is not just one way to get into The Realm, there are actually hundreds of ways to get to that special place. My "bridges" into The Realm were found not by pressuring myself, which I had done for years, but through having an open mind to all things. I recall trying so hard but always finding myself a little lost and confused. It existed-I knew that, but I could not grasp it. At times I would look to the world for the answer but knew deep inside that was wrong. Other times I would look to others for the "bridge" but every time I did that the path I was seeking was obstructed by confusion and could not be seen or felt at all. To look to others was wrong. Self-reliance is 100% critical. What was also very important was having the courage to move away from common life and try to become an adventurer that was willing to take on acts of spontaneity. To take on the unknown without fear of the outcome.Within this book there are several true-life stories, all of which have taken me to places beyond this world, beyond myself, and to a place where I come closest to finding true love, support, spirts of the loved ones that have gone to heaven, God, and a few near death experiences in Alaska. Some of the stories that you will read include: The Escape, which is about finding The Realm and becoming a true adventurer. Crashed and Broken is when I fell off a glacier in Alaska and had to be rescued. The Charge is the time that I was charged by a bear. All amazing stuff for sure. All of this was done while in The Realm.I truly hope this book and my stories give you the courage to find The Realm, and become an Adventurer in order to live a great life filled with love that is pure and of absolute truth. GOOD LUCK and CALL ME IF YOU NEED HELP!!

The Infinite Land
This book contains the story of an 870-mile canoe trip through the Canadian Barren Lands west of Hudson Bay that two friends and I completed in the summer of 1988. The trip took 55 days. We started on Wollaston Lake, in northwest Saskatchewan and ended at Baker Lake in the Northwest Territories (now Nunavut). The journey took us through remote areas of the boreal forest country to the Arctic divide and into the vast Barren Lands of the Northwest Territories. The area we traveled through has become part of Nunavut as the result of the Nunavut Land Claims settlement. We faced many difficult portages, swarms of blackflies, dangerous whitewater, strong winds, and expansive ice-cold lakes. We retraced significant portions of J.B Tyrrell's 1893 and 1894 geological expeditions in the Barrens and explored Farley Mowat's "The Deer's Way", described in his book People of the Deer, that separates the waters of the Dubawnt and Kazan Rivers. We traveled part of the route used by the tragic Arthur Moffat expedition in 1955. We saw effects of past continental glaciation, herds of caribou and muskoxen, white wolves, abundant bird life and much evidence of past cultures that had once occupied the land.

The Discus Thrower Meets Peter Pan
"An invitation to dream, and a reminder of public art's ability to continually inspire and expand imaginations." --Michael R. Bloomberg, founder of Bloomberg LP and Bloomberg Philanthropies, and 108th mayor of New York City"This book captures the enigmatic, cockeyed, only-in-New York charm of classics such as E. B. White's Stuart Little and George Selden's A Cricket in Times Square." --Adrian Benepe, president, Brooklyn Botanic Garden, and former New York City parks commissioner In a cruel act of vandalism, Peter Pan has been ripped from his perch near Gracie Mansion and tossed in the East River. Rescued by police divers, he finds himself awaiting restoration in a storage facility on Randall's Island. There, among the disused lampposts and flagpole finials, he meets another bronze statue--the Discus Thrower--who has been languishing in the storeroom for a quarter century with a missing arm and a missing discus. Will the mercurial Peter Pan and the stolid Discus Thrower be able to get along, and perhaps even learn something from each other? And can Peter and Tinkerbell help the Discus Thrower get restored and placed back on his pedestal, at long last? This delightful work of fiction is based on the real-life restoration of Charles Andrew Hafner's statue of Peter Pan (1928) in Carl Schurz Park and Kostas Dimitriadis's Discus Thrower (1924) in Randall's Island Park--a process that both the author and the illustrator had front-row seats to. Newly unveiled at its place of honor near Icahn Stadium, the Discus Thrower is also celebrating the centennial anniversary of winning the gold medal for sculpture at the 1924 Summer Olympics. New Yorkers of all ages will enjoy reading this fanciful tale and then going to visit the statues that inspired it.

Mars on Earth
An utterly unique travel memoir about a gay expat searching an otherworldly place for a deeper understanding of his partner and his adoptive homeland. Embark on an extraordinary odyssey through the heart of the world's driest non-polar desert--the Atacama. In Mars on Earth, intrepid journalist Mark Johanson navigates this otherworldly terrain, a sliver of camel-colored hills, windswept dunes, and desolate salt flats nestled between the Pacific's tumultuous waves and the towering Andes. Unfolding against the backdrop of Chile's 2019-2020 protests, Mark's journey begins in Santiago, unraveling a rich tapestry of human resilience and passion that fuels a nation's desire for change. As he traverses 1,200 miles of alien landscapes, Mark climbs to the Andean Altiplano's dizzying heights, explores the Pacific's kelp forests, and ventures onto a lithium-rich salt flat threatened by progress. The narrative reaches new heights as Mark delves into the heart of the Atacama, meeting captivating characters--a guardian of ancient mummies, a guru in a glass box, and a copper miner who defied nature's grasp for 69 days. At its core, Mars on Earth weaves a rich tapestry of voices, highlighting the stories of Chile's marginalized communities, including the working class, Indigenous peoples, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and immigrant communities from Venezuela and Haiti. Each narrative contributes to the social movement that could redefine the nation's future. This vibrant and adventurous work of narrative nonfiction is a captivating exploration of a land both barren and brimming with life.

Rio de Janeiro
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, holds a unique spot in its allure to travelers worldwide. It is a destination of adventure, sensuality, mystique, pleasure, beaches, and the world-famous weeklong celebration of Carnaval, called by many as the world's largest annual party that culminates in the Sambadrome competition of twelve schools for the title of being recognized each year as the school that best exemplifies the heart and music of Brazil. For many years Pancho dreamed of visiting "Rio" (as it is often referred to). On his "Bucket List" of world destinations to experience, high on the list was his desire to participate in the annual Carnaval festivity first hand. When the opportunity to do this presented itself, he quickly seized that opportunity even though he was seriously ill. "Rio de Janeiro, The Spirit of Carnaval" recounts the day-by-day experiences of his trip from Los Angeles International Airport to Panama City, then connecting to Rio. Among the many experiences, he describes the culture shock of arrival in a foreign country and accommodations in Rio, the initial struggle to adapt to culinary differences and grocery shopping, public transportation, and the exhilaration of participating in the many street parades during the week of festivity. You will feel the rush of the hot weather reaching the top of the mountain to arrive at the giant statue of Christ (Cristo Redentor) and Sugarloaf Mountain. The author puts you, the reader, into the seat of viewing the intense Sambadrome competition that takes place over two nights with six schools each night. Finally, returning home, the stopover in Panama City, visiting a centuries-old church (La Iglesia de Los Pobres), his horror in finding a 16th-century prison that has been converted into a restaurant and learning of pirate raids from those times for treasure, and observing a cargo ship coming through the Panama Canal. There is an incredible amount of adventure in this book that will draw you in as the reader!

Unknown New York
An intrepid and gifted artist uncovers and illustrates more than 100 surprising, enchanting, and sometimes downright bizarre nooks and crannies that make New York such a compelling city. It's no surprise that New York City is the most visited destination in the U.S., and has proved itself to be an endlessly fascinating exploration ground to visitors and natives alike. Unknown New York walks readers through the vibrant, hidden, and forgotten worlds churning beneath the surface of the city. From the oldest bridge -- a footbridge described as a "red sidewalk through the sky" -- to a quirky and little-known Superhero Supply Store in Brooklyn to the original and abandoned Hall of Fame in the Bronx, the author takes us on a magical mystery tour through the city many people think they know. Each entry presents a brief and compelling description of a hidden park, historical site, niche shop, etc and is accompanied by a charming four-color illustration by the author. Divided into chapters titled Hidden History, Humble Parks, On the Street, Shopping Spree, Quiet Realms, Central Park, and Excusions, Jesse Richards reveals to us such extraordinary sites as the first Hall of Fame, a church where an attempted assassination took place in the 1800's, a part of the Bronx that resembles Capri, the many pocket parks hidden in plain sight, the less frequented corners of Central Park, unusual shops conveying surprising items for all ages, a waterfall tunnel in midtown, and so much more. Also included are curated walks to lead you to several sites in an afternoon. There's a Downtown River Walk, Neighborhood Parks Walk, Midtown Book-Lover's Walk, and a Hidden Central Park Walk.
