Niagara Falls and the Mysterious Barge
Many years ago, when just a kid in high school, I was taken to see the great Niagara Falls. Of all the sights that intrigued and awed, one that stayed with me since then was the sight of a lonely barge, called a scow, sitting precariously just a few hundred yards upstream from the precipice of the Niagara Falls on the Canadian side. I wondered how it got there, and I was told bits and pieces of what others had heard, of what was, of course, hearsay and inaccurate. Hard to believe that fifty years had passed since I asked that question, and no one I ever spoke to had the answers. I decided it was time to find out, and after much difficult research, I found the astounding answers. Here is that remarkable story.
Canadian Dualism
The purpose of this book is to analyse and interpret the present state of biculturalism in Canada. It examines the way in which English-speaking and French-speaking Canadians behave toward each other as parts of the same national whole, and the way in which the ideas of one group have been affected by those of the other. The underlying assumption of these studies is that these two groups constitute the foundation of the Canadian nation, and that the behaviour of each can only be understood in the context of its relationship with the other. The basic question raised in these studies is whether there has been communication, adjustment, and co-operation between the two cultural groups, or misunderstanding, friction, and conflict. Inevitability, since Canada has been created on the basis of compromises, the answers do not fall neatly into either category, but partly under both. This book is intended to shed some light on the questions "what is Canada?" and "How much have English-speaking Canadians and French-speaking Canadians contributed to the Canadian whole?"Contributors include: G.V. 罈 Collaborateurs: G.V. Your Loving Anna
In 1883 Anna Leveridge brought her children from England to make a home with her husband in the backwoods of north Hastings County, Ontario. She learned to live frugally, and to practise the rugged pioneer arts of making do, using up, doing without. From the time of her arrival until 1891, when her mother died, Anna wrote frequently to her family in England. Some of her letters were lost, but many were kept and later returned to the family in Canada. They tell about her life, with its hardships, its joy in simple things, and its abiding faith in the goodness of God. Louis Tivy, Anna's grandson, prepared the letters for publication. In writing the accompanying narrative, he drew upon the recollections of his grandparents and memories of his own childhood in rural Ontario.

Faces, Places and Days Gone By peers into our past through the lenses of those that lived and explored it. See what they saw as time passed and how the U.P. evolved into the wonderous place we know today. From the author's unique collection, witness newly restored images from long lost stereoviews, cabinet cards, postcards and lithograph engravings. Join us on a visual journey to relive some of those moments, and discover a unique heritage through those faces and places. From the Soo to Ironwood, from Copper Harbor to Mackinaw Island-you'll never see the U.P. in quite the same way!"With his book Faces, Places, and Days Gone By, historian Mikel B. Classen has achieved a work of monumental importance. Drawing from his collection of archival photographs, Classen takes readers on a journey in time that gives rare insight into a vanished world." --Sue Harrison, international bestselling author of The Midwife's Touch""Classen's compilation of photographs from his personal collection span more than 100 years of U.P. history and is sure to bring history to life for readers. Each photo is accompanied by a blurb explaining the story within the image. The collection encompasses myriad subjects, such as homesteading, lighthouses, ships, and even sled dogs. The restored images honor the everyday lives of Yooper and document U.P. heritage and culture." Chronicle, Vol. 46., No. 2 (Historical Society of Michigan)Mikel Classen's Faces, Places, and Days Gone By provides a fascinating and nostalgic look at more than a century of Upper Michigan photography. From images of iron mines and logging to Sunday drives and palatial hotels, you are bound to be in awe of this chance to visit the past." -- Tyler R. Tichelaar, award-winning author of Kawbawgam: The Chief, The Legend, The Man"Mikel Classen's new book, Faces, Places, and Days Gone By, belongs in every library in Michigan. And when I say every library, I'm talking about every public, high school and college storehouse of knowledge." -- Michael Carrier, MA, New York University, author of the award-winning Jack Handler U.P. mystery series"I found this photographic history of Michigan north of the bridge surprisingly informative and enjoyable. It piqued my interest when I did a first quick look and had to stop and return to one striking photograph after another. And then there is the photo of a Native American mother holding her baby. I can't help but wonder if, in a few years, the child will be taken from her and sent to a church or government school which will ruthlessly try to entirely strip the child of its Native American culture. Regretfully it was a fairly common practice. Obviously, my response to the photographs was both intellectual and emotional. This book is a rich historical look at the Upper Peninsula that literally shows it from the ragged edge of the frontier to the 1920s." -- Tom Powers, Michigan in BooksLearn more at www.MikelBClassen.comFrom Modern History Press www.ModernHistoryPress.com

New York Bars at Dawn
Daniel Root's photos of New York bars at dawn are a perfect blend of beauty and melancholia. Everything about them is just right. --Roz Chast, New Yorker cartoonistNearly every day, Daniel Root sets out before sunrise to wander the streets of Manhattan with his camera. In those comparatively quiet hours, the entire city wears a different face, but Root is particularly fascinated by the scenes to be glimpsed through the windows of its bars. Empty of patrons and illuminated by an odd mix of artificial lights--neon beer ads, red EXIT signs, a single bulb above the cash register--they present a more hushed and mysterious aspect than in the busy evening hours. Nonetheless, each one--whether a dive bar, a sports bar, or a restaurant bar--still conveys an individual character, a distinct personality.New York Bars at Dawn presents some two hundred of Root's most compelling bar portraits, ranging from well-known establishments like Balthazar, McSorley's, and the Stonewall Inn to nameless dives and an American Legion post. A foreword by Rosie Schaap, author of Drinking with Men, shows us just how much Root's photographs reveal about bar culture, and an afterword by art historian Suzaan Boettger examines their aesthetic qualities. This will be an essential volume for anyone with an interest in nightlife, interiors, or urban photography.
The Arctic Fox
The Shackleton of his day, Leopold McClintock (1819-1907) from County Louth was the leading Arctic explorer of the Victorian era. He undertook four major voyages, epic sledge journeys, and was the first to bring definite information on the lost Franklin party. He then rose to admiral and advised Robert Falcon Scott before the Discovery expedition in 1901. After his death a memorial plaque was unveiled at Westminister Abbey, portraits were hung in the National Portrait Gallery in London, and the McClintock Channel in the Arctic was named after him.
Great Montana Weekends
"What should we do this weekend?" Whether you live in Montana or are just passing through, Great Montana Weekends offers up some essential ideas about how best to spend your time in the Treasure State. You could think about skiing at Big Sky for a couple hundred dollars a day, but what about cross-country skiing on a closed forest service road for free? There's fly-fishing the Yellowstone, sure, but what about trying to snag a paddlefish outside of Glendive? You could always take the kids to a movie, but what about riding the carousel in Helena instead? This is a different kind of guidebook. Rather than giving you websites and hours of operation, maybe some mileages, Great Montana Weekends provides possibilities and context, the cultural and social and historical background for what's possible in the coming weekend. Arranged by season, Great Montana Weekends is illustrated with more than 300 photos, as well as a generous helping of tips, tricks, quotes, and snippets of advice. Built on the authors' forty-plus years in Montana, this isn't the only guidebook you'll ever need, but it may very well be the one you return to the most.
