Two Sermons Preached By Charles Peters In Dominica A Critical Exposition
In this paper, I conduct a critical exposition of a pamphlet published in 1802 on the subject of the Two sermons preached by the late Reverend Mr. Charles Peters A.M who was the Rector of St. Georges and Roseau in Dominica, on the 11th and 13th of April, 1800. The sermons were based on an exegesis of Colossians 4:1: Additionally, I critique the attached appendix which includes his minutes that he wrote of three trials "at the grand sessions holden at Roseau, in the Island of Dominica, on the 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th of February, in the Spring of 1779." These extraordinary sermons were preached over two centuries ago by this Anglican preacher, who had joined the abolition movement, and used the platform of his office to rail against the injustice that enslaved Africans and their descendants in Dominica were subject to. His efforts were greeted with disdain from the local plantocracy.
Traveling to Bahamas. A Local Guide to New Providence and Nassau Paradise Islands
Traveling to Bahamas. A Local Guide to New Providence and Nassau Paradise Islands. The culture of the Bahamas includes a mix of African and European influences. People from the Caribbean and the Americas have also affected it. Social conventions and daily life: Most Bahamians value their families, however the number of official weddings declined in the late twentieth century. A single woman, generally the mother, is leading an increasing number of homes. Women were traditionally stay-at-home moms and spouses before the 1940s. Most women now work outside the house as a result of greater educational options and the growth of the tourist sector. Furthermore, by the late twentieth century, Bahamian women had begun to rise to the top of the public sector, finance, law, medicine, politics, and other fields. A maid or domestic worker is frequently employed by middle- and upper-class Bahamian homes. Housework is shared by poorer households. Grits, potatoes, bread, conch, fish, spiny lobster, chicken, and foreign meats are all staple meals. Peas and rice, potato salad, macaroni and cheese, cracked conch, conch salad, fried and steamed fish, and fried chicken are among national specialties. A typical dessert is guava duff, a cooked fruit and bread concoction served with a butter sauce. The asue (a collective savings group), friendly societies and lodges, a long tradition of storytelling, and the usage of bush medicine are all examples of folk practices. Junkanoo, the principal festival and celebration, stands out among traditional group activities.
With Anza to California, 1775-1776
Juan Bautista de Anza led the Spanish colonizing expedition in 1775-76 that opened a trail from Arizona to California and established a presidio at San Francisco Bay. Franciscan missionary Fray Pedro Font accompanied Anza. As chaplain and geographer, Font kept a detailed daily record of the expedition's progress that today is considered one of the fundamental documents of exploration in the American Southwest. This new edition includes Font's recently discovered field journal--the actual notes he wrote on the trail. Previously published only in Spanish, this journal contains many details and perspectives not found in the two "official" versions that Font prepared after the expedition. It supplants the 1930 edition prepared by Herbert Eugene Bolton, which was based solely on Font's "official" texts. With Anza to California, 1775-1776 interweaves and correlates for the first time all existing texts of Font's journal and incorporates the latest research on this pathbreaking expedition. Editor Alan K. Brown has rendered a more accurate translation, allowing us to relive the journey through Font's eyes as the friar presents a panorama of history, geography, and ecology. Font also describes the interaction between Hispanic settlers and Native peoples--revealing Spanish relations with the Quechans on the Colorado River and the Kumeyaay uprising in San Diego.Featuring maps and relief profiles drawn by Font, along with new maps prepared by Brown, this edition includes an extensive introduction and copious explanatory notes. It is the most complete account of the Anza expedition and a foundational primary source in California and Southwest history.

New York by Neighborhood
New York by Neighborhood presents a vibrant tapestry of 75 distinct locales, defined as much by individual residents as by shops, architecture, streets, stories, traditions, and an openness to transformation. More languages are spoken in New York than anywhere else in the world; a testament to this diversity are the city's neighborhoods. From Arthur Avenue in the Bronx, with its age-old Italian restaurants and shops, and Astoria Queens, with its vibrant Greek community and diverse landscape, to Manhattan's Chinatown and Greenwich Village, New York City is its neighborhoods, first and foremost. This book looks at the essential New York through a lens focused on its many distinct and colorful neighborhoods, providing in each case a snapshot of a place and its people, as well as brief and informal texts incorporating anecdotes and fascinating historical facts. Beautifully photographed by New York photographer and author Andrew Garn, the volume will appeal to visitors who want the full picture of this great city; as well, it will appeal to the resident, who continues to marvel at the vast array of wonders that make up the city that never sleeps.

After 5 days of staying in Brazil, we arrived in Buenos Aires and boarded the cruise ship and adventured for two weeks around the whole South America.
Life With Riv
Last July my husband Doug, and I flew to San Francisco to spend a week or so with our son Brett, and his big fluffy Bernedoodle Riv. We don't have grandchildren yet so for now Riv is our granddog. He is a well-behaved and charming eighty-five-pound dog, and he is welcomed in many places in California. Brett takes Riv out in the city all the time. When visiting San Francisco we often also spend a few days in Napa Valley. One night at Ang癡le Restaurant in the historic Napa Mill area, about twenty people, all Ang癡le patrons, stopped at our table to ask what kind of dog we had with us, what was his name? The friendly staff would bring dog treats for Riv. I was quite surprised by all the attention Riv was attracting. I thought, "Wow, Riv is pretty special. Maybe I should write a book about him!" So in August I wrote this book. I had plenty of photos to use as inspiration.Brett trained Riv to behave at all times. Therefore, Riv is welcomed inside businesses, restaurants, aboard some ferry boats, and in the Flagship Gym. Some children and even some adults could learn lessons from Riv's good behavior! I have to credit Brett with his fantastic dog-training skills.San Francisco is a beautiful city, and Brett ensures Riv experiences many of the beautiful sites in and around the Bay Area. This book will show you places you can take your dog to enjoy the outdoors, to have some fun, and maybe make some new dog-loving friends.1

Jamoji
Golden sunsets on sandy beaches, sips of fresh-from-the-source coconut juice, and aquamarine waves dancing on the shore blend into a symphony- this is Jamaica. The epitome of an island getaway, Jamaica is more than the strip of hotels and resorts. Past the golden gates lives a vibrant community filled with history, customs, laughter, family, and, of course, warm patties. In, Jamoji-Essays of Life and Play, author Colleen Hall dives into the Jamaica she grew up in and the reasons she comes back to it again and again. From how Jamaicans live to how they grow, Hall opens a window into the soul of the island and its people. With almost a third of Jamaican-born nationals living outside of Jamaica, Hall portrays how the diaspora still carries the heartbeat of their motherland. She expertly entwines memorable anecdotes, mishaps, and insights to share the real Jamaica, one both on and off the island. Jamoji immerses every visitor-both new and returning- into Jamaican culture, customs, and cuisines. No problem, mon!

Marked By Ecuador
Riding the wave of chance, Mike Krabal, a blue-collar West Virginian man, set off for Ecuador. Despite being totally unprepared, half a life's worth of years taught him to pay special attention to the magic of uforeseen encounters. They might lead to paths worth discovering. When a brand new friendship opened the door to experiencing life as a foreigner, he obliged. Through culture shock, language barriers and moments of deep gratitude he discovered a perfect South American host to foreign eyes.

Monument Road
In the late fall of 2021, I took a road trip through the Four Corners region of the American Southwest - a journey into John Ford country, John Wayne country, and what the AAA used to refer to on their maps as "Indian Country" - as a bit of a meditation on all of that macho American male mythology from the movies, and on the horrors of American history which those myths elide. The photographs I took along the way were an attempt to enter into conversation with the iconography of the region, with the mythos of the west, and the American obsession with the open road.

Beyond Sea Level Part 3 Life and Death Valley California
This is the third book in a series of 4 parts on a California vacation from august of 2013. The resulting series is the combined effort of a whole family exploring, reaching out and enjoying all that the majestic state has to offer. The sharing is the resulted expressions and photographs that adorn these pages. These books would stand well without the family photos included but the addition of these personal pictures adds to the warm expressions of a real family vacation. The desolation and extremes of the dessert are a strict contrast to the life and vibrancy of the cities, parks and coastal regions. Just to set foot in a place where the elements could kill you in a few hours is an awakening experience that can bring a family a little closer together
Beyond Sea Level Part 4 the Coast California 2013
This is the last book on a four part series on a California vacation from August of 2013. The resulting books are a combined effort of a whole family exploring and enjoying the majestic beauty of the state and the company of each other. These books, with their quotes and words of wisdom, would stand well on their own as coffee table travel books of place and thought but take on another aspect with the addition of actual family vacation pictures expressing the warmth and beauty of families in times of joyful exchanges. Family life can be boring, painful and too confined when seen only in the light of daily living and surviving. It very often does not accurately reflect the feelings and dreams of the members. We are often not really what we appear to be or are demanded to be by the roles we must play in our daily family life. It is often very gratifying to step out of our roles and try to find out who we really are and would like to be. We should not lose touch with the child that remains within our hearts.
Living Landmarks of Chicago
Living Landmarks of Chicago goes beyond the what, when, and where to tell the how and why of fifty Chicago landmarks. More than a book about architecture, these are stories of the people who made Chicago and many of its most popular tourist attractions what they are today. From the parlor used as a meat locker to the fight over the Field Museum, history comes to life in these tantalizing tales. Each chapter is a vignette that introduces the landmark and brings it to life, and the book is organized chronologically to illustrate the development of the city's distinct personality. These fifty landmarks weave an interconnected tale of Chicago between 1836 and 1932 (and beyond).History lines Chicago's sidewalks. Stroll down LaSalle or Dearborn or State and you'll see skyscrapers that have been there for a century or more. It's easy to scurry by, to dismiss the building itself, but a hunt for placards turns up landmarks every few feet, it seems. Here's a Chicago landmark; there's a National Historic landmark. They're everywhere.Ironically, these skyscrapers keep the city grounded; they illustrate a past where visionaries took fanciful, impossible ideas and made them reality. Buildings sinking? Raise them. River polluting the lake and its precious drinking water? Reverse it. Overpopulation and urban sprawl making it challenging to get to work? Build up. From the bare to the ornate, from exposed beams to ornamented facades, the city's architecture is unrestrainedly various yet provides a cohesive, beautiful skyline that illustrates the creativity of necessity, and the necessity of creativity. After a sound-bite history of the city's origins, you'll meet the oldest house in Chicago-or is it? Kinda. Sorta. Depends on who you ask. That's Chicago. Nothing's simple, and nothing can be taken for granted. The reason the city has a gorgeous skyline and a vibrant culture and a notorious reputation for graft is because of those who built it, envisioned it, manipulated it."What you learn in this book is not so much where the landmarks are or how they were made (you will learn those things) as much as why they matter, why their grandeur persists. Every chapter's story is supported by a journalist's tenacious research to find not merely the first brick in a building, but to track down the very moment the ghost of its form was born." Award-winning author Bull Garlington

On the Water
"I take a stroke and lean back, gazing up into the jet skies, bejeweled by the moon and the galaxies of stars. The hull glides in silence and with such perfect balance as to report no motion. I sit up for another stroke, now looking down as the blades ignite swirling pairs of white constellations of phosphorescent plankton. Two opposing heavens. 'Remember this, ' I think to myself." Few people have ever considered the eastern United States to be an island, but when Nat Stone began tracing waterways in his new atlas at the age of ten he discovered that if one had a boat it was possible to use a combination of waterways to travel up the Hudson River, west across the barge canals and the Great Lakes, down the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico, and back up the eastern seaboard. Years later, still fascinated by the idea of the island, Stone read a biography of Howard Blackburn, a nineteenth-century Gloucester fisherman who had attempted to sail the same route a century before. Stone decided he would row rather than sail, and in April 1999 he launched a scull beneath the Brooklyn Bridge to see how far he could get. After ten months and some six thousand miles he arrived back at the Brooklyn Bridge, and continued rowing on to Eastport, Maine. Retracing Stone's extraordinary voyage, On the Water is a marvelous portrait of the vibrant cultures inhabiting American shores and the magic of a traveler's chance encounters. From Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where a rower at the local boathouse bequeaths him a pair of fabled oars, to Vanceburg, Kentucky, where he spends a day fishing with Ed Taylor--a man whose efficient simplicity recalls The Old Man and the Sea--Stone makes his way, stroke by stroke, chatting with tugboat operators and sleeping in his boat under the stars. He listens to the live strains of Dwight Yoakum on the banks of the Ohio while the world's largest Superman statue guards the nearby town square, and winds his way through the Louisiana bayous, where he befriends Scoober, an old man who reminds him that the happiest people are those who've "got nothin'." He briefly adopts a rowing companion--a kitten--along the west coast of Florida, and finds himself stuck in the tidal mudflats of Georgia. Along the way, he flavors his narrative with local history and lore and records the evolution of what started out as an adventure but became a lifestyle. An extraordinary literary debut in the lyrical, timeless style of William Least Heat-Moon and Henry David Thoreau, On the Water is a mariner's tribute to childhood dreams, solitary journeys, and the transformative powers of America's rivers, lakes, and coastlines.

Memoirs of a Mansion
Although it may shock you, I was conceived on a drafting board. It happened on a rainy day in the office of my architect, Monsieur Ernest Devolz, in the city of Fribourg in Switzerland. The name I was given at birth was The Villa St. Pierre, and I was destined to have an interesting life. I appeared in the peaceful and prosperous year of 1912, in a chic faubourg outside the ramparts of a medieval town on Lake Neuch璽tel. Wealthy Parisian tourists sojourned in the hotel across from me, spending their days at their beach cabins and their evenings at the Casino-Theatre. The first automobiles passed in front of my gate on Avenue de la Gare and a Zeppelin dirigible floated silently over my rooftop. Savoring the warmth of the early summer in 1914, we were unaware that we were living in the calm before the storm of the Great War. Suddenly, the whole world was plunged into an abyss of death and destruction. Our newly-drafted soldiers took communion in the church, their rifles at their sides and to the sound of drums and bugles, marched off to defend our borders. How could a small, neutral country like ours, surrounded by nations at war, defend itself? Did those blaring air raid sirens mean a bomb was about to land on my roof...? Memoirs of a Mansion brings a 110-year-old villa to life by giving it a voice of its own. The villa reveals its history through two wars, earthquakes, tornadoes and three generations of the Swiss family who built it. Abandoned and in disrepair, it is bought by an American couple who begin its restoration. The untimely death of the American husband puts his widow in a precarious position. With no income, should she sell the villa and return to the United States with her young son or continue with the restoration and invent a way to support her family? The spacious villa finds a new life as a Bed & Breakfast, an extension of an American University, a venue for Master Class opera, art classes and a TV soap opera. The villa's amusing perspective of the human condition will delight readers as it passes through the industrial and digital revolutions, ending with the Coronavirus. Memoirs of a Mansion, in its authentic geographical setting in French-speaking Switzerland, shines a laser beam on a lesser-known area of Europe. Funny, factual and wise, Memoirs of a Mansion is a thoroughly enjoyable read.

My First Summer in the Sierra
My First Summer in the Sierra is a natural history classis and a autobiographical sketch by John Muir that describes his adventures in the Sierra Mountains and the wildlife found there. It contains this passage: "In the great Central Valley of California there are only two seasons--spring and summer. The spring begins with the first rainstorm, which usually falls in November. In a few months the wonderful flowery vegetation is in full bloom, and by the end of May it is dead and dry and crisp, as if every plant had been roasted in an oven. Then the lolling, panting flocks and herds are driven to the high, cool, green pastures of the Sierra. I was longing for the mountains about this time, but money was scarce and I couldn't see how a bread supply was to be kept up. While I was anxiously brooding on the bread problem, so troublesome to wanderers, and trying to believe that I might learn to live like the wild animals, gleaning nourishment here and there from seeds, berries, etc., sauntering and climbing in joyful independence of money or baggage, Mr. Delaney, a sheep-owner, for whom I had worked a few weeks, called on me, and offered to engage me to go with his shepherd and flock to the headwaters of the Merced and Tuolumne rivers--the very region I had most in mind."

Belize in Focus
The small nation of Belize has long been seperated from its Central American neighbors by history, language and culture. Formerly a British colony, this English-speaking country has traditionally looked towards the Caribbean islands rather than Central America for its economic and political links. Yet Belize's enclave status is increasingly a thing of the past, as trade, cross-border migration and a booming eco-tourism industry break down old barriers and put pressure on the country's social structures and natural resources. As Belize's agricultural mainstays face an uncertain future, the country has opted for "green tourism" and service industries as economic alternatives. Beaches, coral reefs and rainforests are now at the forefront of the Belizean economy, a development with serious implications for the country's environment and indigenous communities. Belize In Focus is an authoratative and up-to-date guide to this spectacular country. It explores: - The history: Maya culture; Spanish and British colonists; Garifuna and Mennonite settlements; independence and Guatemala's sovereignty claim; Central American or Caribbean? - The economy: The crisis in traditional farming; fishing and foreign investment; timber and textile exports; Coca Cola's plantation plan; the impact of liberalization; the drugs economy. - The environment: sea, reefs and rainforest; government policy and forest reserves; logging and land rights; tourism and sustainability; does eco-tourism work? - The culture: indigenous Hispanic and British influences; immigration and social change; Creole culture; art, literature and music; a nation in transition. - Where to go and what to see: Must-see landmarks and historical sites as well as the author's expert tips on how to get the most out of a brief visit. Belize In Focus is one in a series of guides covering the countries of South and Central America and the Caribbean.
Guatemala in Focus
This work explores Guatemala. Considered by some to be the most beautiful and yet the most tragic of Latin American countries, Guatemala's military regimes gave the word "disappeared" its sinister connotations. Its majority Maya population has kept its culture alive despite five centuries of almost apartheid oppression. A mecca for tourists drawn by its lakes, volcanoes and indigenous culture, Guatemala is also a land of all-pervasive injustice and political violence.
