Coraz鏮: from the Heart of Latin America
W.R. Stanton spent the early 1970s hitchiking, taking buses, and riding atop trains and trucks through Mexico, Central America, and the Andes, seeking to experience more of the native culture he had fallen in love with during an earlier trip to Mexico. Almost twenty years later, as a professional photographer and filmmaker, he returned to Latin America to photograph what made his original experiences there so life-transforming: the people. Now, after a long career as a successful photographer and filmmaker, he has focused his efforts on creating a book that features the photos he took and the experiences he enjoyed working and traveling in the region over four decades. As the story of his early travels in the 1970s unfolds, it becomes clear that young people from all around the world were on a similar journey. This was a time when young people felt safe hitchhiking or traveling however they wantedas long as they had a backpack and a little cash. Stantons story and photos offer a window into what it was like to live in that more innocent time.

Crossing California
Sacramento Bee journalist Sam McManis spent five years on the road trying to find the real California. He discovered that there is more than one California, but every different California is equally weird and wonderful. Worlds collide and commingle: the neo-hippies with the rednecked farmers; the urban sophisticates with the quirky desert dwellers; the Hollywood power brokers with the outsider artists. Brought together in a bouillabaisse of voices, Crossing California will make you see the state in an entirely new light. From the briny scent of Fisherman's Wharf to the fragrant sage scrub of Imperial County; from the otherworldly starkness of Death Valley to the crashing waves and flexing muscles at Venice Beach, Crossing California gives readers a first-hand experience. McManis has stalked the tony aisles of the newly minted Broad Museum in gentrified downtown Los Angeles, and quick-footed it through the International Banana Museum along the desiccated shores of the moonscaped Salton Sea. He has inadvertently gotten his car stuck in a tree at a cheesy drive-thru giant Sequoia roadside attraction along the hemp highway between Mendocino and Humboldt, and witnessed, with both fascination and can't-look-away horror, grown men and women, sans children and sans inhibitions, belt out full-throated versions of "Let It Go" at a Disneyland sing-along. All told, Crossing California is a trip. (Color photographs),

Road Tours Of The Southwest, Book 12
The ROAD TOURS OF THE SOUTHWEST series is just that -- a literary tour of the Southwest's most scenic icons. Namely, national parks and monuments, archeological ruins, state and tribal parks. This series features 17 select and so-called "Circle Tours" that begins in a favorable tourist locale and returns. Thus, Southwest tourist hubs such as Flagstaff, Kayenta, and Phoenix, Arizona; Albuquerque, New Mexico; Kanab, Utah; and Cortez, Colorado. In all these so-called Four Corner States hubs, there are distinct regional tours headed in certain directions. For instance, from Albuquerque, tours head west and north while in Flagstaff tours head east, north, and northeast. Accordingly, the scenic destinations for each series follow a recommended route, and much like a roadmap, the destinations are sequential. For those who rely on conducting their tours without a tour guide, this methodology is meant to save drivers time and money and distance.Compared to other sightseeing books, what makes the ROAD TOURS OF THE SOUTHWEST series unique is the fact all of the scenic destinations are based on popular regional destinations that are usually within a couple of hundred miles from the starting point. Readers simply select the series volume that holds one's interest and based on desirable scenic destinations. The other notable aspect of this series is the low-cost for each volume. Moreover, all of the information is factual, in that not only a description of each scenic destination is presented, but also the essentials of each destination's geologic aspects, human and natural history. Where relevant, added bonus material such as hiking trails relevant to the destination, and special bonus subject matter such as an abstract of the Colorado Plateau Province that defines the large landscape of the American Southwest, archeological timeline and dating, the history of the Ancestral Puebloans (the indigenous culture of the Colorado Plateau), and an array of other applicable subject matter. Contact information and directions are also included in all these scenic destinations. The research behind this series is based on the author's extensive exploration throughout the Southwest, mainly as an interpretative educator and guide. The material in each destination is "layered," which means the information graduates from the essential to more in-depth. The reader decides on how much to read or ignore.Road Tour Series: 12 (140 pages) 17 Volumes total

Southern California's Best Ghost Towns
The ghost towns of Southern California-some dramatic and nearly intact, others devastated-are well worth visiting. Most are remnants of once-colorful mining towns, though there are also railroad towns, a World War II relocation center, a promoter's swindle, and a failed socialist colony. Some excellent attractions remain. One of the best-preserved stamp mills in the West is in Skidoo. Smelters, homes, stores, and the remarkable wooden American Hotel can be found in Cerro Gordo, which the author calls "California's best true ghost town." Seasoned back-roads traveler Philip Varney, who has visited nearly a hundred ghost towns in the area, provides a down-to-earth and helpful guide to more than sixty of the best in Southern California and nearby Inyo and Kern counties. He defines a ghost town as a town with a population markedly decreased from its peak, one whose initial reason for settlement no longer keeps people there. It can be completely deserted, have a resident or two, or retain genuine signs of vitality, but Varney has eliminated those towns he considers either too populated or too empty of significant remains. The sites are grouped in four chapters in Inyo County, Death Valley, the Mojave Desert and Kern River, and the regions surrounding Los Angeles and San Diego. Each chapter provides a map of the region, a ranking of sites as "major," "secondary," and "minor," information on road conditions, trip suggestions, and tips on the use of particular topographic maps for readers interested in more detailed exploration. Each entry includes directions to a town, a brief history of that town, and notes on its special points of interest. Current photographs provide a valuable record of the sometimes fragile sites. Southern California's Best Ghost Towns will be welcomed both by those who enjoy traveling off the beaten path and by those who enjoy the history of the American West.

Edited by Aaron Foley, the author of How to Live in Detroit Without Being a Jackass, The Detroit Neighborhood Guidebook is a genuinely felt, wide-ranging collection that gives unique perspective on a city that many people think they have figured out. A homegrown portrait about the lesser-known parts of the city, it showcases the voices and people who make up: - Cass Corridor- West Village- Minock Park- Warrendale- Hamtramck- and almost every other spot in the city. With short essays and poems by Zoe Villegas, Drew Philip, Hakeem Weatherspoon, Marsha Music, Ian Thibodeau, and dozens of others. In this guidebook, Detroiters will recognize their hometown and the stories it tells, while readers from outside Detroit will get an insiders' look at an oft-misunderstood American city.
The Cuban Chronicles
In the infancy of Cuba's tourism, Wanda St.Hilaire takes a trip to the tiny island. In spite of her love of all things Latin, she puts herself on a travel ban to Castro's Cuba, one that lasts twenty years. When she is forced to cancel a trip to Oaxaca, Mexico at the last minute, she finds herself in Cuba twice, on back-to-back trips. Walking into the backstreets of Havana, eyes wide open, she finds herself pulled into a dalliance with a charismatic cubano. Underneath the fa癟ade of Cuba's tourism lies the desperation of a society living mostly in abject poverty. When tourists mingle with locals, we get a glimpse of what underlies the frivolity of Cuban entanglements. St.Hilaire speaks with an authentic voice and doesn't mince words; she recounts her own activities, emotions, and opinions with refreshing honesty. With each solo adventure, the author reaches a deeper understanding of human nature and the world. At the same time, she conducts a journey of self-discovery, learning about her own entrenched beliefs, biases, and blemishes.

Murray falls in love with the country but never stops asking questions as her radius of exploration widens. With an eye for the telling details of daily life, Murray first savors the mixture of timeless beauty and decrepitude that defines Havana and then sets out for provinces to the west and east of the capital.
