Mr. Snail and Other Tales
Mr. Snail and Other Tales is a collection of five short stories for young children, starring Mr. Snail and his friends' trials, tribulations, and travails. The stories are about persistence, resilience, and the importance of friends. The stories' themes closely reflect my motivation for writing them. This book is a happy accident, 22 years in the making. It was a mommy's way to help her child. Zach was a sweet, hefty baby, who took his time crawling, walking, and talking. But seemingly overnight he lost his ability to speak. And I panicked. We took him to every doctor and specialist under the sun to no avail. What was going on? Why wasn't my baby like other babies? I was frozen with fear. Fearful of what his future will be. Fearful of him being teased. Fearful of the limits the world would place on him. Fearful of being judged by other moms. I cried. All the time. Did I do this to him? Was this it? Was this his capacity? What if it was? But more importantly, what if it wasn't?I had to put my anxieties aside to help my son. After a litany of attempts to teach him - a menu for his meals, sing-alongs on his Fisher Price tape recorder, and sign language - we started writing a series of stories together. I'd say a sentence and he'd fill in the last word (with occasional edits). Week after week, sentence after sentence, until Mr. Snail and Other Tales was created. I illustrated the book. Zach picked out and named all the colors for all the illustrations. We read the book every night, and every night Zach was able to fill in more and more of the words. Until one night, he read the entire book to me. My heart nearly gave out. I hope reading Mr. Snail and Other Tales to your favorite littles brings you at least a fraction of the joy it brought to me and mine.

Broccoli Doesn't Bite
Learning the alphabet and how to be healthy has never been more exciting! On the heels of his popular Painting With... series comes Joshua James Cole's newest offering, an alphabet book series that introduces important early learning concepts. In the debut book, Broccoli Doesn't Bite, each letter of the alphabet is presented through an interesting message of alliteration that also teaches various vegetables, both common and rare. Each vibrant spread features a vegetable character starting with a certain letter that also introduces an action word of the same letter, performed by the character. The text introducing E declares, "Edamame can't enchant," and goes on to feature three young wizard-ly looking soybeans casting out the words, "Expecto potatoes!" While on the letter "P" page, it is revealed that "Parsnips don't perform," supported by a groovy parsnip behind a microphone, rocking cool shades and a gold tooth. The youngest readers will be aided by their alphabet learning and pronunciation through the alliteration, while older readers will enjoy identifying diverse vegetables and their silly antics. A glossary at the back of the book explains the words reviewed in the book while a notes section discusses the origins of the familiar parodies used throughout the book.
Painting with Words
Painting With Words gives a new take on introducing words to children by using cleverly arranged illustrations along with non-rhyming poetry to engage young readers with word puzzles to decipher and visual brain teasers to solve. Each spread features a haiku riddle which is accompanied by a graphic art that is composed of a series and pattern of words that construct the image. A cat illustration is entirely produced by related words such as meow, purr, and hiss-a delight for children to pore over. Encouraging early creativity and self-expression, Painting With Words is a fun story that teaches basic word concepts and reiterates recognition with related words. Cole says, "I created this picture book because I am passionate about poetry and art. Haiku is a poetic form that is very fun and accessible for children." In Painting With Numbers, readers will encounter riddles about numbers from one to twenty, accompanied by artwork that depicts each number through a clever contortion or shaping of a numeral image.

Little "b" Makes a Bunny, Little "d" Makes a Ducky
Young children frequently get lowercase "b" and lowercase "d" confused or mixed up. No need to worry. Little-"b"-Bunny, a bunny made with little "b", and Little-"d"-Ducky, a ducky made with little "d", are here to help get that fixed up! Using these characters, this book presents young children with how to write and recognize the difference between "b" and "d". To help remember these letters, "b" is turned into a bunny (Little-"b"-Bunny) and "d" is turned into a ducky (Little-"d"-Ducky). The reader then learns about some of the activities of Little-"b"-Bunny and Little-"d"-Ducky, which of course involve a number of words starting with "b" or "d", respectively. The book ends with a listing of the "b" words and "d" words encountered in the book. This book is appropriate for children in the 4- to 8-year-old age range. With rhyming text and colorful, simple illustrations, it presents a fun and entertaining way to help young children in overcoming the reversal of lowercase "b" and lowercase "d". It will also help in building vocabulary and reading skills as early readers begin reading on their own. Begin. Dig in. And enjoy!Heather M. Thompson is a self-published children's book author living in Bainbridge Island, Washington.
