The name is from a famous storyteller who drowned trying to save the life of a swimmer while he was camping in the area. The area was created as a rescue place for shipwreck victims in the 1800s, was a lookout station during War War II and was manned by the U.S. Coast Guard for a few years when it was first created. The main park consists of a beach side camping and recreational area until that stays full all year round. In the last two decades they were able to create a river side camping area with more sites, a large bathhouse and other great amenities.
