Crash Course
This book demands each of us look in the mirror and get real before we get behind the wheel. When fragile human bodies have to occupy the same spaces as big, heavy, complex machines that can travel at high speeds, the outcome is inevitable. Some people will die. So why do we identify with the driver in the car rather than the person they have killed? Would you still shrug and chalk it up to random bad luck if that dead person was someone you loved? Using the comic book format, this book vehemently dispels the notion that traffic accidents are inevitable and/or acceptable on any level, insisting that drivers own their responsibility, and consider the consequences of careless and dangerous behavior. It is part thought experiment, part testimonial, and part indictment of a dysfunctional transit environment that puts convenience for drivers ahead of logic, natural resources, and even ahead of human life. Crash Course questions the decisions that shape all our lives. Why don't roads serve everyone who needs to use them? What makes some people not worth protecting? Where do we start in fixing a broken system that facilitates the use of vehicles as murder weapons in places like Charlottesville, VA?

Capoeira
The Atlantic slave trade caused havoc on the cultures and political states of Africa and led to the forced migration of millions of Africans to the Americas. The Africans could not bring their material cultures and artifacts, but most important, they brought their histories and cultures-philosophies, languages, political structures, and religious and artistic expressions. Hundreds of societies were established throughout the Americas by Africans who had freed themselves. These societies were called maroons in the United States, palenques in the Spanish-speaking countries, and quilombos or mocambos in Brazil. The most famous mocambo was the Quilombo dos Palmares, which existed for almost one hundred years as an independent nation made up of Africans, indigenous peoples, and poor whites. Many of these societies had their system of self-defense or martial arts, which, not surprisingly, had their origins in Africa. Africans practiced a variety of martial arts. From the top of northern Africa to the bottom of southern Africa, there were and still are hundreds of fighting styles that emphasized skill, technique, and intelligence over brute force. One of the martial arts that sprang from the connection between Africa and the Americas is capoeira angola, which is still played in Brazil and around the world today. Design for young readers, and packed with over 30 illustrations, this book tells the story of Capoeira Angola.

Peter Pan
Peter Pan; or, the Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up or Peter and Wendy, often known simply as Peter Pan, is a work by J. M. Barrie, in the form of a 1904 play and a 1911 novel. Both versions tell the story of Peter Pan, a mischievous yet innocent little boy who can fly, and has many adventures on the island of Neverland that is inhabited by mermaids, fairies, Native Americans and pirates. The Peter Pan stories also involve the characters Wendy Darling and her two brothers, Peter's fairy Tinker Bell, the Lost Boys, and the pirate Captain Hook. The play and novel were inspired by Barrie's friendship with the Llewelyn Davies family. Barrie continued to revise the play for years after its debut until publication of the play script in 1928.The play debuted at the Duke of York's Theatre in London on 27 December 1904 with Nina Boucicault, daughter of playwright Dion Boucicault, in the title role. A Broadway production was mounted in 1905 starring Maude Adams. It was later revived with such actresses as Marilyn Miller and Eva Le Gallienne. The play has since been adapted as a pantomime, stage musical, a television special, and several films, including a 1924 silent film, the 1953 Disney animated film, and a 2003 live action production. The play is now rarely performed in its original form on stage in the United Kingdom, whereas pantomime adaptations are frequently staged around Christmas. In the U.S., the original version has also been supplanted in popularity by the 1954 musical version, which became popular on television. The novel was first published in 1911 by Hodder & Stoughton in the United Kingdom, and Charles Scribner's Sons in the United States. The original book contains a frontispiece and 11 half-tone plates by artist F. D. Bedford (whose illustrations are still under copyright in the EU). The novel was first abridged by May Byron in 1915, with Barrie's permission, and published under the title Peter Pan and Wendy, the first time this form was used. This version was later illustrated by Mabel Lucie Attwell in 1921. In 1929, Barrie gave the copyright of the Peter Pan works to Great Ormond Street Hospital, a children's hospital in London.

The Golden Book of the Dutch Navigators
First published in 1916, "The Golden Book of the Dutch Navigators" is a detailed account of various famous Dutch navigators, many of whom sacrificed their lives and did so knowingly in the name of exploration. Some of them were drowned, and some of them died of thirst. A few were frozen to death, and many were killed by the heat of the scorching sun. Others were speared by cannibals and provided a feast for the hungry tribes of the Pacific Islands. This volume is not to be missed by those with an interest in navigation and its history, and it would make for a fantastic addition to collections of allied literature. Willem van Loon (1882 - 1944) was a Dutch-American journalist, historian, and successful author of children's books. Contents include: "Jan Huygen Van Linschoten", "The Northeast Passage", "The Tragedy Of Spitzbergen", "The First Voyage To India--Failure", "The Second Voyage To India--Success", "Van Noort Circumnavigates The World", "The Attack Upon The West Coast Of America", "The Bad Luck Of Captain Bontekoe", etc. Other notable works by this author include: "The Story of Mankind" (1921), "The Story of the Bible" (1923), and "Witches and Witch-Finders" (1923). Many vintage books such as this are increasingly scarce and expensive. We are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with the original text and artwork.

Ward Nine
Najma wakes up one morning to the horror of her mentally ill mother's gruesome murder on the streets. She is horrified and shocked that someone would kill a sick woman so brutally. Her mother had suffered a mental break down after Najma's birth due to postpartum stress. Najma's life is definitely in danger, but there is a young man who remains by her side throughout the ordeal. On the morning of her mother's death, it is revealed that this young man is her brother, and he carries more conundrums about Najma's identity. She is only sixteen and acutely needs someone. Ironically, Zaire is the only person she can trust. She dreams of being a fashion designer and model, but the desire wanes when her mother is brutally murdered and dumped at the market square. It is later revealed that Najma's father is a prominent politician who chose to marry a statesman's daughter for prestige instead of the love of his life, Elima, Najma's mother. The politician, however, takes care of their bills. When Elima gets worse, she is admitted to the mental hospital and there resides in Ward Nine, the details of which captured in large tracts of flashback. Najma discovers her world, bit by bit through Zaire, giving the reader an insight into how she became who she is. The world of money and power is also revealed through Zaire and other characters named after gods and goddesses. Osanyin is a Nigerian ritualist and money maker, Barvo owns a lake of fake gold (just like the god of the springs), Lorantu is a smuggler of youth and an ancient god of youth who refuses to grow old. Ploutus is Najma's father and a statesman. Anthenia, the goddess of gardens, is a dealer of poisons and silent assassinations. Finally, there is Artemis, the goddess of fertility. The delicate intertwining of Greek and Panafrican lore creates a new, cerebral setting. These characters expose the sordidness of the political family and the bitter fruits of extreme power. It reveals the corruption, betrayal, injustices, and acute pain that those involved inflict on innocents. Currently, mental health is a pertinent issue. Encumbered by postmodern depression, hunger for validation, lack of stress management units, and a man-eat-man mentality, the world has stopped being a peaceful haven. Everyone is struggling to fit in, and this title aims to establish the causes of mental instability through fiction. The story is also based on crime, fraud, mass killings, and other vices that are meant to unveil the other side of the world that people assume doesn't exist. Money and wealth are necessary evil that humanity can't help being attracted to. The book satirizes what humans are willing to do for money and power. Ward Nine is a story of wealth, power, and self-made immortality of characters intertwined in religious extremism, science, black magic, and the twisted cultural beliefs of people across Africa and beyond. It is an exposure of social class divisions, the struggles on the ladder, and the rise and fall of pseudo empires that exist beyond the eyes of the public. It is where purported good meets the notion of evil. The mission: to unveil the darkest secrets of the land by way of satire, humor, and fantasy. Ward Nine ends in the triumph of love, in its rawest and purest form. It is a story of love causing pain and facilitating simultaneous healing. In the end, it's not all tears. There is love and peace in doing the things that one loves most.
